My son has been taking lessons with Mr. Brown for 2 years. We started off in-home but switched to online at the onset of the pandemic. Mr. Brown is always friendly fun and professional. My son started bass in school but did not enjoy the classroom lessons. My son has some learning and focus challenges. Mr. Brown is very patient, encouraging, and kind with him and he works hard to keep my son engaged. My son made significant strides. I highly recommend Mr. Brown as an instructor.

Hey there – I am so glad that you want to study bass! Upright bass is the cornerstone of my passion for music -- it is such a beautiful instrument and I love to help people find their unique personality on the bass. A little bit about me: I am a graduate of the world-renowned jazz program at the Jacobs School of Music and have been teaching for 8 years. I am well-versed in tried-and-true methods of establishing healthy technique, good tone, good time, and musicality on the bass. I have experience with many styles and genres and have been fortunate to play with artists from over 20 countries. My work has been featured in NPR’s Jazz Critic’s Poll, Jazziz Magazine, and All About Jazz, and I was recently chosen to be a cultural ambassador for the U.S. State Department’s global music fellowship (OneBeat). In other words, we can work together on whatever music really lights you up, no matter the style! Whether you are just beginning or are already advanced, there's so much we can do ...

About Hannah

I hold a degree in Jazz Studies from the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University. During my time as a student, I focused on becoming an adaptable bass player in many forms of modern music and in cross-cultural music exchange, thanks to the tutelage of Latin Jazz giants Michael Spiro and Wayne W

Hannah is such a great teacher and musician! Always patient and encouraging. Her knowledge of music and technique is vast and she has so much to offer. I'm usually very nervous to play in front of others because I'm a beginner, but she creates a safe space that takes the nerves away. She clearly loves what she does and it rubs off; I am always energized after our lessons!

I've been taking on-line lessons from Mitchell for the last few months. He's helped me to steadily progress. Mitchell is a highly experienced working bass player and he has a strong sense of exactly what I need to work on next in order to more fully develop my skills. I highly recommend him especially if you are interested in learning to play jazz, walk your bass and improvise. He knows the way.

This was my second lesson. Mitchell has made thoughtful and practical suggestions to improve my playing and he seems to know exactly where we're headed. Great lesson.
Steve
Mitchell is a fantastic teacher. I selected him because he is a pure bass teacher and not a generalist just teaching bass. I am so glad I did. I am an adult student having tried to teach myself and I can say for sure that after 5 lessons, Mitchell has set me straight and I am learning more than ever. He is enthusiastic and also makes the lessons fun. I have also signed my son up for bass lessons with Mitchell. Give it a try - Mitchell is awesome!

Abbey is the real deal. She is the musician’s musician, the teacher’s teacher. As an instructor, she brings enthusiasm, patience, and thoughtfulness to every lesson. Coming into her tutorage as an intermediate level student, she has pushed and inspired me to be a more thoughtful performer and composer. Abbey draws from her deep well of theory and technique to create very practical exercises to fit one’s individual needs. I highly recommend her instruction for students of any level.
Andrew
Abbey is a great musician and she's everything you could want in a music teacher: inspiring, patient, thorough, and absolutely aware of just who she's teaching and what and how that student needs to learn. She's the best.
John
I highly recommend Abbey to the serious bass player. Highly qualified with a Master's Degree, and with a natural talent for teaching, Abbey is one of the best teachers I've ever seen and motivates me to do my best. Always making sure you understand what's being taught and tailoring the lessons to your individual needs and aspirations. Abbey can find problems even you might not be aware of and helps work out a solution.

My lessons are specific to every student, specializing in bringing out the strengths of each individual student. I will talk with the students and gain an idea of their musical goals when approaching the bass and give them a roadmap to best ensure their success and skill development.

I am familiar with a wide range of beginners repertoire to give students something to work towards. I encourage my musicians to step out of their comfort zone with their playing to stretch their abilities while emphasizing a strong work ethic and personal responsibility, which will lead to a life long success in learning environments.

Hi there!
I have a firm believe that music is one of the purest forms of self expression, and aiding people in discovering their talents and passions is one way that I can share my love of music. As a child I took piano lessons in the hopes of learning to play jazz. Unfortunately I found myself with a teacher with whom I could not communicate, and was not able to adapt to the styles of music that I found stimulating. I was left apathetic, so I quit. Only in later years did I try again, and through teaching myself, found that I, in fact, love the instrument! This is one of the reasons why I really want to teach; I recognize how integral the role is to inspiring and instilling a sense of worth and passion of all kinds of music to my students.

Name is Stephen Menold, and I am a musician. My major instrument is the Contrabass/bass guitar, although I do play Piano and Guitar. I am currently a Masters student studying both jazz and classical styles at Loyola University in New Orleans. I ...

"At first I was skeptical about taking online lessons, but I love taking lessons with Hannah. I'm a classical bassist starting to learn jazz, and Hannah is providing exactly what I was hoping for in starting my jazz career. The first lesson we went over what my goals are, and she is providing me with exactly the tools that I need to progress. Every week she sends me a personalized document of what we went over in lessons, what I should focus on in the coming week, and music resources (exercises, jazz charts, etc) to utilize! She is patient, kind, knowledgeable in both technique and theory, and pushes me every lesson."

Along with being incredibly knowledgeable, Alex has the patience and communication skills that really make him excel as a teacher. As a complete beginner to the upright bass (and music in general), I find Alex breaks concepts down in a clear, step-by-step fashion, so that it is not overwhelming. He also gives useful tips on how to be a better learner when tackling challenges, which helps make my personal practice even more effective. Alex is approachable and eager to answer questions even in between classes - I highly recommend him as teacher!"
