I teach the basics of learning acoustic guitar technique including: Selecting an appropriate guitar for the student, correct holding of the guitar, finger and hand placement, guitar notes and scales, guitar tablature, reading and playing guitar chords, strumming and picking, playing guitar songs from most genres and music theory. I also teach electric bass guitar and ukulele, beginner through intermediate. I teach guitar in most genres of music (except hip-hop and rap). I learned to play ukulele as one of my first instruments. I learned to play electric bass guitar in stage band and in a rock group in high school. First, I will teach you all of the vital foundational material that you’ve missed, so that the Guitar neck becomes a whole, rather than a jumble. I will also diagnose any technique problems that you’re having, and prescribe solutions for overcoming them quickly.
Next (all along the way, really) we will apply your newfound knowledge and technique prowess to playing music that you enjoy. Whether it’s Heavy Metal, Blues, Rock, Jazz, Classical - or any other style - you’ll be able to understand how the players you love are able to put this stuff together. And, you’ll be able to come up with your own riffs, solos, and songs, too.
You will learn how to:
- Play faster, more cleanly, more powerfully, and more confidently
- Understand rhythm reading and notation, so that you can learn songs quickly and easily
- Build and play chords all over the neck, and know how they relate to songs and soloing

Guitar is one of the most popular instruments for new musicians to learn today, and for good reason. Based upon the lute of Renaissance Europe and the vihuela of Spain during the same time period, the guitar has undergone a huge number of changes and updates over the centuries to become the instrument we know and love today.
Though early versions of the guitar only had four strings, this number was increased to 6 in order to form the classical guitar, a Spanish invention that resembles a modern acoustic guitar in construction and feel aside from its use of nylon strings instead of steel. Additionally, the guitar’s body shape has changed in many ways since the days of the lute and the vihuela; while early forms of the guitar were smaller with a deeper body, the modern guitar is bigger and longer with a shallower body in order to increase the power and depth of the sound that the guitar is able to create.
The acoustic guitar was a staple in American music throughout the 20th century and still remains extremely popular today. However, the shape of guitar music and pop music in general was completely changed when the electric guitar was developed in the 1930s. The exciting and completely new sound of the electric guitar was a huge inspiration for blues and jazz artists in the mid 20th century, gradually leading to the creation of rock ‘n’ roll with the rise of legendary artists like Elvis and Buddy Holly.
The history of the guitar is long and rich with intrigue, and the influence that guitar has had on popular music for decades as well as today is unmatched. This is one of the primary reasons that guitar is such a wonderful instrument to learn, especially for people who are completely new to music making and want to develop a useful skill.
Learning Easy Guitar Chords and Guitar Chord Songs Online
Among the many other benefits of learning guitar, one of the primary ones is the fact that there are so many songs you can learn as a beginner. Popular songs are made up of chords, and you’d be surprised to learn how many top hits from the past several decades as well as current day utilize the same few easy guitar chords.
During your early guitar practice, some of the first few easy guitar chords you will learn are G, C, E, and D. These chords can be used in different progressions to sound like many of your favorite songs. In fact, complete beginners can easily learn the chords to many Beatles songs so you can play along to some of the most legendary classic rock songs around!
In addition to learning easy guitar chords, many of the same and similar guitar chord songs have easy and recognizable melodies that you can learn to play. In fact, many new guitar players find melodies easier to play than chords since melodies only involve playing one note at a time rather than most or all of the guitar’s strings at a time. This gives new guitar students time to get used to the feeling of the strings under the fingers of their left hand while also adjusting to different strumming patterns and techniques with their right hand in order to get the sound they want.
Why You Should Find an Online Teacher to Learn Guitar Chord Songs
Though you can learn some easy guitar chords and melodies on your own using online resources or hand-me-down music books, finding a great teacher is one of the most important things you can do for yourself as a new guitar player. Guitar teachers have the experience and know-how to put you on the path to success based upon your exact goals, and they’ll make sure that you don’t waste time working on skills that you aren’t interested in or won’t serve the type of music you want to play on your guitar.
Additionally, one of the biggest obstacles for new students trying to get better at their instrument is burnout or frustration. When working on your own, you may find that you have trouble motivating yourself to practice or you try to take on projects that are outside your skill level, leading to frustration and potentially giving up altogether.
When you have a kind and understanding teacher encouraging you to do your best while also keeping you accountable for the amount of practicing you need to do between lessons to get better, you’re guaranteed to improve much faster and more significantly than you could on your own. Your teacher will provide you with a distinct to-do list to follow each week, which takes out the element of stress that guitarists learning on their own can feel about organizing their own practice sessions.
What Are the Benefits of Hiring an Online Guitar Teacher?
At TakeLessons, we firmly believe in the power of online guitar lessons for students young and old who are looking to improve their skills. Many people think that they are unable to take up a new instrument and learn easy guitar chords and much more from a professional because of a busy schedule or lack of transportation. However, in-person lessons are not the only way to get individualized musical instruction.
Online guitar lessons offer many of the same benefits as lessons presented in person; in fact, learning guitar online also has many added benefits that in-person lessons don’t have. For example, online lessons can be taken in the comfort and privacy of your own home so you can feel as comfortable as possible while working on your new skill.
Plus, many guitar students have to drive or commute for extended periods of time to reach in-person teachers depending on where they live and their access to different modes of transportation. Learning easy guitar chords and guitar chord songs with an online instructor removes all travel time, allowing adults with busy schedules to learn a new musical skill on their ideal timetable and removing any time sitting in traffic or looking for a parking spot.
As long as you have a reliable Internet connection as well as a working camera and microphone, you can receive all the same instruction that an in-person student would receive as well as the same level of individualization in your lessons. All your teacher really needs is to be able to see your hand positioning in order to teach you how to play easy guitar chords properly, and being able to connect with your teacher in real time will be extremely encouraging for you as a new guitar player.

All of our guitar instructors on TakeLessons are qualified to teach easy guitar chords to beginners as well as many other aspects of early technique including scales, fingerings, and even tablature reading.
If you are seeking a guitar teacher but feel that you’ve progressed past the level of beginner, there are multiple teachers available that can meet you where you are and help you to continue to improve your playing skills. Spend some time browsing through our site to get a feel for what types of teachers are available and what levels they teach as well as what the typical pricings are for 30-minute, 45-minute, and 1-hour lessons. You can start out with any length of lesson you prefer, and you can always switch to a shorter or longer lesson at any point in your guitar journey.
One of the best ways to get an accurate feel for a teacher’s instruction style and personality is to read the reviews left by current and former students of theirs. These reviews will clarify how worthwhile past students feel this teacher to be, how their lessons are typically formatted, and how friendly or personable they are.
At TakeLessons, we know that you don’t want to learn easy guitar chords from just anyone; you deserve to work with a teacher that truly believes in you and wants to do everything in their power to help you improve. If you find yourself still having questions for a specific teacher after looking over their personalized profile and reading their reviews, you can always send them a private message before committing to any scheduled lessons. Our teachers are extremely friendly and welcoming and will be happy to provide any clarification they can in order to get you started.

My first comment before even committing to lessons with Matt was my feeling that guitar was a very daunting instrument to learn and was not sure I would succeed. Graciously, but with confidence Matt eased my concerns while learning about me, my interests, and what my goals were learning guitar. I felt comfortable with the flexibility of lesson packages, online or in person, and his willingness to learn at my pace.
What happened over my first three lessons of never playing guitar is inconceivable. I have learned all major chords, proper techniques, and I am already playing chord progressions of my favorite songs! Maybe I ended up learning at his pace without me knowing it.
If you are looking for someone to just give you a book and tell you how to play, have fun picking up a new hobby. If you are looking for a mentor in the realm of guitar with your best interest in mind, play guitar along with you, and make it fun to enjoy playing the guitar, well search no further."
I started taking guitar lessons with Richie having no previous experience with playing an instrument or reading music. Being left handed I was having difficulty making sense of the beginner guitar books and thought I'd give personal lessons a try.
Richie quickly taught me the basics of guitar and how to read music. Over the last 2-1/2 years he has helped me overcome my lack of rhythm, has taught me music theory, how to structure songs and techniques of soloing in various scales.
I've enjoyed getting out in my spare time and watching Richie perform in his acoustic and blues bands and have developed a new appreciation of music.
I now practice/play daily for enjoyment and only wish that my job wasn't taking me away from this area. Otherwise, I would be continuing my lessons with Richie for years to come."
