I have been using ASL since I was 4 years old and I have attended California School for the Deaf, Berkeley (Fremont) and Riverside. I have received valuable experience from Deaf peers of Deaf parents, Deaf adults and Deaf leaders. In this sense, I am a native user of ASL and ASL Fingerspelled Signs.
Graduated from Gallaudet College (University) in Washington, D.C. with a B.S. in Business Administration. I received two Masters degrees from California State University, Northridge, one in Deaf Education and the other in Educational Administration. Do you want to learn how to communicate with the Deaf? Are you intrigued by the use of sign language? Come learn with me. I am Deaf and I use American Sign Language. My brother is also Deaf, so we grew up using ASL together and at school. I have been teaching online for the past 5 years, and I love teaching others how to improve their communication skills in ASL. Sign language is one of the most expressive languages, have you seen an interpreter recently on the new? Have you noticed how fast they move their fingers, and make a variety of facial expressions. I can help you, no matter what level of ASL you know, I want to help you make progress and become fluent. I have a toddler and he is learning ASL, if he can, you can! See you in the classroom!

I teach and tutor in American Sign Language from the perspective of one who came into ASL and the Deaf community without a thought of being a professional in a related field. Still, I did become a professional interpreter, teacher, tutor, mentor and have been a service-provider, advocate and friend with many Deaf since 1984.

I want my students to learn that fear and anxiety in undertaking a new adventure are usually of our own making, and that learning about other cultures and languages by association with native users is so valuable.

Therefore, my classes are highly interactive and immersive; students will be required often to learn voice-off, role-play sign language / deaf experience situations, complete tasks between classes, and engage fully. Focus will be on conversational quality, grammatical structures, situational encounters, expressive and receptive language skills.

I will provide curriculum and, as needed, written information and videos used.

I offer:

I have known Allison for many years. In all that time, she has always advocated for the needs of the individual. This is one of her qualities that makes her a great teacher. She has a lot of experience in the Deaf community through interactions, experience and education. She is helpful, knowledgeable, thorough, and willing to make the extra effort to get a job done well. She is also very enjoyable, funny, and easy to get along with. She has been the “go to” person in the Deaf community for as long as I have known her.

h3>About ASL

American Sign Language (ASL) first arose in the early 19th century when a minister, Thomas Gallaudet, was attempting to teach his neighbor's deaf daughter how to read and write. Gallaudet visited the National Institute for Deaf-Mutes in Paris, then asked one of the professors to return with him to the United States.

Together they established the American School for the Deaf and developed ASL. Today, ASL is the fourth most studied language by American university students, but it’s not a universal language. In other words, signs differ between American, British, and French Sign Language.

There are even different ASL dialects in the United States, Canada, and other countries. It's also a language in its own right — not an exact, word-for-word equivalent of spoken English. Syntax and words can change meaning in American Sign Language depending on hand movements, expressions, and where a sign is placed in a person's signing space.

Why Learn Sign Language?

Many people learn sign language because they're part of the Deaf Community or because they wish to communicate more easily with deaf friends and family members. But you certainly don't have to know someone who is deaf to want to learn ASL. There are plenty of other reasons to get ASL lessons, too!

The Americans with Disabilities Act requires many businesses and services to provide ASL interpreters, so learning ASL will boost your resume in almost any industry. Knowing ASL also provides opportunities to help those around you. Consider volunteering at a local church or theater. Or, you can simply be prepared to assist a stranger when you’re out and about.

Learning how to sign is a deeply rewarding process, right from the start. You’ll be amazed at just how much you can communicate with signs, facial expressions, and body language. This opens our minds to the fact that communication is about much more than spoken words. And to top it off, just like learning a spoken language, studying ASL can improve your cognitive skills, increase your spatial awareness, give your brainpower a boost, and even enhance your memory.

With so many reasons to learn ASL, it’s no wonder so many students are turning to our sign language lessons!

What You'll Learn in American Sign Language Lessons

The prompt feedback, individual attention, and personalized curriculum you'll receive from a teacher in sign language will give you an advantage when learning this complex language. Many students find that private ASL lessons are more engaging and effective than large classroom settings.

Your teacher is 100% dedicated to you and your success, so you can ask all your questions and spend as much time as you need on each concept.
