I have extensive training in improvisational acting from East Carolina University in North Carolina and I've been teaching acting students since 2007. Students learn quick thinking, free movement, and artistic expression through acting exercises and games.

About Heather M.
More important than my conservatory education and my experience as an educator and a performer is my passion for teaching music and acting and my undying belief that anyone can learn to be a musician and an actor.

I'm currently available to teach lessons in my own St. Augustine home studio and online around the globe.

I'm a cum laude graduate of Westminster Choir College in Princeton, New Jersey and a winner of its merit scholarship. I studied classical music there, grateful to have been taught by the likes of tenor Thomas Faracco, and renowned voice scientist and pedagogue, Dr. Scott McCoy.

After performing with the New York and Royal Philharmonics, the New Jersey and Virginia Symphonies, the American Boy Choir and the internationally renowned opera star, Andrea Bocelli, studying opera and piano at Westminster Choir College a
nd performance art and improvisational acting at East Carolina University in North Carolina, and appearing in shows and pageants across the east coast, I found my life's work in 2003 when I began teaching music.

I've taught hundreds of different students since 2003 with great success, from 5-year-olds with special needs to middle-aged professional opera singers, from a professor in Saudi Arabia to a 65-year-old doctor of music, from kids of Radio Disney to students of the famed Actors Studio in New York, from busy stay-at-home parents to retirees with bucket lists, from CEOs to touring singer-songwriters.

I've created and led a workshop about singing called, "The Whole Body Singer". I've written dozens of articles about music and music education for the blog at TakeLessons.com.

My extensive knowledge of the voice has encouraged and empowered hundreds of singers and prepared many of them to win competitions, pageants and auditions, as well as roles in operas and musicals, including lead roles in Limelight Theater and Curtis Camp productions. When a student comes to me in need of voice coaching, my job is to get to the root of mental blocks, to reveal why and how she's not singing at her optimum.

Before I received formal training at a conservatory, I learned piano on my own, and both have prepared me to teach almost anyone, with any experience, how to play.

The intensive training and education that I received at Westminster Choir College in songwriting, music theory and sight reading has benefited my students at every level.

My current work as singer and keyboardist in the acoustic folk rock duo, Timberwood, has strengthened my knowledge of a broad range of styles and genres. As a lifelong learner, I have a strong commitment to continuing my education. That's why I studied songwriting online with the Berklee College of Music in Boston in 2014.

In the lessons that I teach, I'm flexible, positive and encouraging. While I want my students to have fun and love music, not dread it, I expect hard work and persistence. I am caring, patient, nurturing, and compassionate.
In piano lessons, I usually allow the student to choose a piece with which to warm up and then move on to technique and repertoire.
In voice lessons, I usually warm up the singer and discuss technique and sight singing before focusing on song choices. Joan Frey Boytim wrote a book for voice that I like to use, and I like the Estelle Liebling exercises for the more advanced singer. Hanon exercises are a big part of my piano curriculum, and I enjoy the Bastien and Alfred books for young and old. I have used completely random songs pulled out of a piano bench and a karaoke CD for kids. I will use almost anything I can get my hands on if it means effectively teaching music.

Acting lessons consist of exercises and games that apply learned concepts, with an emphasis on stage acting and Meisner technique, as well as monologue and audition coaching.

Currently, I have only online availability for guitar students.
Students under the age of twelve will use the Alfred Guitar Book for Kids. All other students will start with the Hal Leonard Guitar Method.

Parents, siblings and spouses are always welcome to observe lessons quietly.

Background:
I worked for Eddie Van Halen for five years in the 1990's in the Beverly Hills area of Los Angeles and was instrumental in providing help with development of the Peavey Wolfgang and Wolfgang Special Guitar by providing feedback on the prototypes Eddie was designing at the time. I learned a lot from Eddie and his brother Alex about music and the music industry. (All you have to do is pay attention! ) I have played in bands from Hollywood to Toronto and back both as a singer songwriter and guitarist. I bring the Musicians Institute way to the table and get things up and ru
nning quickly. I help students get it under their fingers fast and get it right the first time.

I believe in sharing the happiness of making music with anyone who loves music and the guitar in particular. I do my very best to get you playing the songs you love in Pop, Rock, Jazz and Folk Music of your choice. Today's modern new guitars are easy to play and you will enjoy learning Guitar right away. That is how it should be.
When you study there is a basic understanding of Guitar to be learned that allows an ease of use for anyone for years to come. This will help you reach your goal and improve each week. My students learn to practice in a way that feels comfortable and makes sense. This takes all the stress out of learning and gives everyone something to smile about and look forward to each week.

The good feeling of playing along with friends and taking a solo is within every students grasp. I will show you the way there. And with a solid and straightforward approach to the theory as it applies directly to the guitar you will feel confident and unafraid of any music endeavor. We'll cover harmony and fingerboard theory and give you a road map of the guitar neck that makes it a pleasure to play. You learn the basics and much more than you thought possible retaining 90 percent of what you learn!

Having been a student myself I was deeply involved in music since age 12 and played in bands and duos for over 15 years . I can help you to be a well rounded player and performer with a smile, a laugh and a joy for music whether your in a band or a budding solo artist.

*** Lesson Details ***
Most students want to play the Guitar to play their favorite songs and I'm the same way. Music is something we carry with us in our hearts and minds. Students will learn what they wish to learn and work at a pace that is comfortable to them. Whether you are a student, “weekend warrior” or a parent whose child has expressed an interest in Guitar anyone can learn all there is to know about Harmony and Theory for the Guitar and how to play their favorite songs.

We cover theory in an easy and straightforward no nonsense way in the first half of each lesson and then apply it to the song you wish to learn. This creates an atmosphere where you understand and feel at home with the Guitar. You get an understanding right away and because it is immediately fun it allows you to feel comfortable at any level. Music is fun, and songs are the creative expression of what we feel. Combining theory and the freedom to play and sing songs allows us to express ourselves through music.
After 6 months students will have a solid foundation in theory, and a road map of the guitar fretboard enabling them to advance to an intermediate level if they are ready to do so. Students will know enough that music as it relates to the Guitar, which is the world’s most popular instrument in contemporary music, is not a mystery but is a welcome friend. And they will be able to play songs by popular artists and advance at a pace that is satisfying and enjoyable.

Thank you James for the training, I grew as a improv student from the time I worked with you. Acting is such a broad term! What are your goals? Do you want to be in films? Do you want to do Shakespeare? Do you want to be in a sit com? Depending upon what your interests are and where you want to go, we will build a plan together. My philosophy on acting techniques is that they are tools to help you, not tests you pass if you're a good actor and fail if you're a bad one. Different techniques work for different people and it is our job to find out what inspires you.

I've worked as a professional actor for many years, performed on Broadway, have my MFA in Performing Arts, and my BA in Arts and Education. I was an assistant director to Tony-winner Sharon Ott and have written and produced my own work. I have experience in both stage and camera acting, which have specific technical differences, but are both a lot of fun once you get used to the medium. Audition technique, preparing monologues, and creating promotional materials are also things I can help with. Anyone who wants to ...

About Rebecca
My approach is both supportive and pragmatic, based on where each individual's skill set is right now and what your specific goals are. I've had the benefit of both formal instruction as well as a decade in the "school of hard knocks." Climbing up the ladder to earn my Equity Card on a Production Contact taught me a lot and I believe gave me a nuanced perspective as a performer.

Over 95% of my career is from attending open calls, including finding representation and my Broadway debut.

I continue to audition for film, television, and theatre, as well as perform in concerts and other venues. I write and produce my own work and am currently signed with Roth and Associates East.

I pioneered a private Arts Academy drama school for 4 years, and am now teaching acting and directing at a middle and high school. My goal is to help students become well-rounded in all the areas that are needed to truly become a working actor. These areas include: auditioning, theater, film, and improvisation.

Being a repertory performer for Silver Star Playhouse (musical theater parodies), and having lots of experience and training in improv and interactive dinner theaters really trains you in comedy.
My husband also owns Sound waves Productions (technological advanced studio in Gilbert)- so completing remote voiceover work for a reel is not out of the question.

I also encourage students to pair in duos for effective scene work and more in-depth technique training (this will also split your lesson cost in half).

About Rebecca
Greetings!
I am currently a full time drama and art teacher at Lumos Arts Academy; a private school I have played a role in pioneering. I also created a Theater and Film Program at Experience Arts School where students ages 5- adult could take classes (group or private) or join an acting company for regular performance gigs. I also directed multiple musicals during this time. My company competed with the AZ Thespians and took home many superior scores.
Personally, I have been acting for 25 years in the Mid and Southwest, studied theater at UWOshkosh, Film at Scottsdale CC, improv with iO in Chicago, and Meisner with Kevin Phipps. I was part of a musical repertory company based in Utah for 8 months, traveled around the Phoenix valley performing in 8 different dinner theaters for 8 years, and have produced and directed multiple professiona
l music videos for Soundwaves Productions in Gilbert.
I believe that each actor learns differently, and the best way is to become well-rounded in your training to discover what works best for you. I have become very well trained in identifying strengths and weaknesses in actors, and will work with you on the best technique to suit your needs and style.

Classes I have created curriculum for/taught include:
Monologues
Auditioning for theater and film
Script Analysis
Beginning- Advanced Improv
Beginning- Advanced Scene Acting
Uta Hagen's Repertoire
Acting for Film
Voice and Diction
Music Video Creation

Rebecca is very accommodating to my needs as I develop my journey into voice over acting. We have spent much time understanding how character dictates the type of voice I use, and I have grown in the range of voices I can do, as well as my proper pacing. Her husband Jim also has an amazing recording studio where we have gotten to experiment with cartoon voice overs to build my reel.

I'm a Los Angeles based TV and Film actress visiting the area until June 1. I will be doing some special acting classes (some geared toward the industry side of acting) and improv acting, a specialty of mine. I'd also love to offer my private coaching services, which is why I'm listing myself here!

I offer the actor (beginning or seasoned) something you won't find on the East Coast. I'm an over 20-year SAG member and working actress in Los Angeles with a body of work that includes a lot of improv and comedy for both stage and TV/Film (regular role on Comedy Central's Reno 911, dozens of TV shows: recently Marlon on NBC and a pilot for A & E starring Alyssa Milano).

I've performed on all the big comedy MainStages in LA for two decades, but have also done my fair share of drama, too. (TV credits include: Bones, NYPD Blue, Strong Medicine to name a few) and prior to moving to Los Angeles where I studied at the Lost Studio with Cinda Jackson, Meg Tilly and Eric Stoltz, I studied with ...

Instead of filling in all my credits below, it's much easier to go to IMDB and look up my name: Kristina Hayes.
You can not only see my credits, there is a link to my acting/dance website where you can view various acting reels and television performances as well as clips of comedy shorts I've made over the years. And you'll probably see that I also teach ballroom dance if that's of any interest to you!

*Please note that I've had a background check on another site and don't wish to pay for it again at this time, but I can see about forwarding you that information. If it's not possible to forward, I'll be sure to get a background check done here as well :)
