Robyn J.

Knoxville, TN

About Robyn

I have been playing violin and viola for over 20 years. I hold Bachelor's and Master's degrees in music and teach assorted music courses at Pellissippi State Community College. I have taught children, teens, and adults; both beginners and continuing students. I learn where the student is skill-wise and we go from there. I also ask the student what his/her goals are, so that we have a set to-do list with which to work. Click the green button to get started!

*** Lesson Details ***
We will work at your pace--I will push you, but I am aware that everyone works at a different speed. I will lear
n that speed and work with you accordingly. I expect students to practice and do their best, but I also understand that life sometimes gets in the way. After a few weeks, you will know the basics of the instrument and be able to play recognizable tunes for your family and friends!

*** Studio Equipment - Parents ***
Music room/office for instruction. Living room with seating for parents/guardians.

*** Studio Equipment - Students ***
I provide a music stand in my studio, but nothing else. Students should have an instrument with all accessories (bow, case, shoulder rest) and also a music stand at home for practicing.

Robyn is fantastic, patient and kind! As an adult beginner, I thought this was going to be an impossible thing to learn. Although the violin is difficult, she makes learning fun and I feel like I have learned so much in just a few lessons.
I would recommend without a doubt!

Viola · In studio
Robyn James is an excellent viola teacher! She is patient, kind, extremely knowledgeable, understanding, and easily adapts to each student's individual playing style and ability. She is also very flexible when it comes to scheduling (especially if a scheduling conflict occurs). I've played the viola for 10 years and I had taken a small break from the instrument when I was introduced to Robyn in school. Since starting lessons with her almost a year ago, my confidence as a person and a player have improved and I have her to thank for it. She is always able to answer any and all of my questions, and if she doesn't have one right away, she does her research and gets back to me by our next lesson. She is very serious about what she does and you can tell how much she loves it. She also knows how to challenge her students in a way that is not overwhelming, and, as long as you come prepared and ready to learn and grow, she is one of the best teachers that you could possibly ask for. I look forward to seeing her every week. Robyn is the best!

Viola Lessons

I have played the viola from sixth to twelfth grade, but never taken a private lesson until signing up to take one at Pellissippi State Community College. From the first day of the lessons that semester until the last I looked forward to going to them. Robyn easy to get along with and an excellent teacher as well as violist and violinist. While I haven't had her as an instructor for violin using what I know from my viola lessons and having heard her play violin I would imagine those lessons are just as fun and fruitful as the viola lessons.

Will F.

Knoxville, TN

About Will

I teach guitar, drums and vocals to an array of students ranging from 10 to 60. Not only do I teach but I also write songs for certain students who have a desire to perform their own music as well as learning and honing their craft on their instrument. I am currently helping a vocal student of mine write some songs after scales and warm-ups and am working with one of my top guitar students tomorrow on different scale techniques. I just placed a drum student in the finals in Alternative Press Magazine's Hit Like A Girl competition. She was the top vote getter with 1,026 votes and is in the top
10 under 18 drummers in the world. I am also working with more and more students on songwriting and showing them different chords and ways to go about writing a song. I would love to get started with you as soon as possible and we will get you where you want to be musically. I find that if a student has a particular song or a rhythm pattern they want to learn they learn more quickly. They're learning and having fun at the same time. We will find what you want to learn and we will get it down! Furthermore, it's your choice if you would rather come to my place as a lot of my students do or have me come to your place as a lot of them do. I look forward to speaking with you! Cheers!

*** Lesson Details ***
I will get you started depending on your skill level. I usually, of course, see where we're at there and then decide what needs to be taught. With each respective student I usually make them a CDR the lessons for you so you can take them home and improve on what we've worked on.

*** Studio Equipment ***

Chad G.

Knoxville, TN

About Chad

Related to academic tutoring, I have worked in the nuclear energy and research industry for 8 years as a design engineer and nuclear safety consultant. During college and early in my career I tutored with a few in-home and online agencies, focusing mostly on SAT preparation and various levels of mathematics. I enjoy helping facilitate understanding through practical examples; seeing a student really connect with a concept helps me feel like I can make a lasting impact on the world.

Related to guitar, I am a member of a touring hard rock band. I have played guitar in various projects (of man
y genres) since 1997. I enjoy helping beginner guitarists learn how to find themselves and their own style in their instrument.

Chad was my tutor for a science class a few years back. He was super knowledgable and helpful at explaining things in a way that I could better understand. Even my teacher saw improvement in not only my grades but my overall attitude in the class because I was now able to be a more successful student! Thanks Chad!

Pre Calculus · In home
Last year I decided to go back to school and needed to take several math classes as part of the program I wanted to enroll in. I was never great with math in high school and was truly dreading Pre Calculus, so I reached out to Chad for help as soon as I enrolled. He was always patient and could explain things in several different ways if I was having a hard time understanding a concept. I got an A in the class and couldn't have done it without him. The following semester, Chad helped me earn an A in Calculus. Math is a lot less daunting when you have someone to explain things one-on-one. I'm looking forward to Calc II, now that I know I have someone on my team to help me succeed.

During my senior year of high school I had the privilege of having Noelle Harb for my voice teacher. I loved her enthusiasm for singing and engaging personality from the first time I met her. She patiently answered questions and taught me many techniques. She was also a wonderful friend and we did things like going to see a live filming of her favorite opera singer. The most important lesson I learned from her over the year I took lessons was having confidence in my own voice and learning to love my own unique sound. I went from hardly wanting to sing a scale for her in the classroom to being willing and confident to sing a solo on stage.

Hi, I'm Molly McKinney and this is my first time taking serious vocal lessons. Noelle has helped me really understand the importance of breathing, and how much it really helps when done the proper way. She has taught me silly little techniques to help me get warmed up, and they really work too! She's very thoughtful and considerate of the students thoughts and feelings. She is funny and nice and I feel like we can joke around while also being serious about singing. One thing she tells me whenever I get nervous about singing something is, "don't be scared. It's just singing. There is nothing to be afraid of," and that has really stuck with me. I haven't been to many lessons, but the ones I have been too have been wonderful help to me, and I can't wait to go to many more!
