Taryn studied fashion design and art therapy at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She worked for Anna Sui and milliner Tracy Watts.
Taryn first started teaching sewing to displaced youth at Hollywood Arts 10+ years ago. She taught "R'ashion" (recycle fashion/sewing) at Environmental Charter High School for 5 years. She headlines EcoFashion workshops all around the world including Zambia, South Africa, and recently at the Green School in Bali. Jack Johnson has donated leftover Tour T-shirts so she could do upcycling workshops at schools. And she's had the opportunity to teach celebrities how to sew at the EcoDivas Upcycling Lab at Sundance. (DJ Aoki was the most fun.)
She taught “Sustainability and the Fashion Industry” at FIDM for 7 years. She is the founder of Beyond the Label, a charitable organization that gets people to think about "What's in my tee?" She encourages people to think of fabric like ingredients and does whatever she can to relate food to fashion including making nutrition label T-shirts to show what's actually in the tee. Due to multiple allergies, you can learn healthy alternatives of what to put in and on your body.
She is on the Advisory Board for Fashion Revolution USA, and the Fashion Department at Santa Monica College AND LOVES TO NERD OUT ABOUT SUSTAINABLE FASHION AND HEALTHY FABRICS.
BtL is a charitable organization that addresses the question “What's in my tee?” to encourage shoppers to consider what their T-shirt is made of and how their purchase affects the world, workers and themselves.
