I am a versatile educator with 20 years experience working in assorted learning settings. I have taught at tutored: writing, language arts, science and math through the high school level, and I have done test prep for all sections of the ACT and SAT exams. In addition, I am a certified yoga instructor. I approach students as people, and I believe that education occurs in multiple directions. While imparting information is a key goal, gaining knowledge is equally important. When I meet new students, I focus on learning names and interests. I play four-square during recess, and I stop to chat with students because those interactions are as valuable as the academic ones. I strive to create an environment where everyone feels safe and acknowledged. In my experience, communal respect helps instill confidence, which is a critical component to student success. My teaching style is enthusiastic and genuine. I work to embody the qualities I seek in students - integrity, perseverance and compassion. I give students my best self, and I am both honest and positive in my feedback and lesson presentation. My students are aware of my expectations, and they also know that I am flexible and open minded. I am always looking to find the appropriate balance between challenge and ease, and I am well aware that it is different for each individual. As a teacher, I seek to share both skills and knowledge. I believe that applying information is more valuable than memorizing it. As such, I work to instill curiosity and to show students that the journey is just as important as the end result. I work to learn something new each and every day, and I encourage my students to do the same.
