    About Stephen M.

    5.0
    (9)
Cellist Stephen performs a wide range of repertoire, from the music of the seventeenth century to contemporary works to American folk music. He began his professional musical career at the age of seven, singing in the Choir of Men and Boys of St. Paul’s K Street in Washington, DC. Stephen has a particular interest in historically informed performance of music from the baroque period up through the nineteenth century. He strives to synthesize knowledge from historical sources, period-appropriate instruments, and vivid storytelling into compelling and thought-provoking interpretations. Career highlights include sharing the stage with such artists as Paul Watkins, Marc Destrubé, and Sigiswald Kuijken. In addition to performing, Stephen is also a devoted music educator. He currently maintains a studio at the New York Conservatory in Syosset as well as teaching privately. Stephen believes in nurturing the interests of each individual, helping students harness their strengths to discover their unique musical voices. He holds a B.Mus. from McGill University where he studied cello with Brian Manker and baroque cello with Susie Napper. Stephen holds an M.Mus. from Stony Brook University where he is currently working toward a DMA studying with Colin Carr.
