About Stephen M.

Cellist Stephen performs a wide range of repertoire, from the music of the seventeenth century to contemporary works to American folk music. He began his professional musical career at the age of seven, singing in the Choir of Men and Boys of St. Paul’s K Street in Washington, DC. Stephen has a particular interest in historically informed performance of music from the baroque period up through the nineteenth century. He strives to synthesize knowledge from historical sources, period-appropriate instruments, and vivid storytelling into compelling and thought-provoking interpretations. Career highlights include sharing the stage with such artists as Paul Watkins, Marc Destrubé, and Sigiswald Kuijken. In addition to performing, Stephen is also a devoted music educator. He currently maintains a studio at the New York Conservatory in Syosset as well as teaching privately. Stephen believes in nurturing the interests of each individual, helping students harness their strengths to discover their unique musical voices. He holds a B.Mus. from McGill University where he studied cello with Brian Manker and baroque cello with Susie Napper. Stephen holds an M.Mus. from Stony Brook University where he is currently working toward a DMA studying with Colin Carr.

Stephen Moran has been teaching my daughter (10y/o) for the past year. She enjoys the lessons with him so far, and her orchestra teacher has been praising her progress.
I was at first skeptical about online lessons, and it took some getting used to. But Mr. Moran was very helpful and patient with setting things up, and now it's working just fine. It has been honestly a blessing not having to drive her to lessons every week with our busy schedules.

Stephen is an all-round expert cellist of all repertoires, from historical to contemporary. His efficient, structured and holistic pedagogical methods, coupled with his intuitive abilities to assess and immediately remedy practical issues are remarkable and unparalleled. What's more, his capacity to inspire and influence his students to love the art that is music precipitates further scholarly and performative successes. I highly recommend his services. You will not be disappointed.

I have known Stephen Moran for almost four years, both as a colleague and teacher. He is not only a first-class cellist and gambist but also a phenomenal teacher. His observations are always astute and his instructions concise and easy to follow. Paired with his patient and warm personality, it is an absolute joy to study with him. He is highly appreciated by his colleagues, loved by his students, and known for being very responsible and punctual.

Stephen is not only a gifted cellist, but also an intuitive and devoted teacher. I've been working with him online for several years now, and my playing has benefitted significantly from his technical expertise and understanding of historical contexts. Few teachers are as ready and willing to explore repertoire as eclectic as I have with Stephen, whose insight extends from the ancient to the contemporary. I attribute my success on NYSSMA/All-State to his wise musical counsel!
