My experience teaching mathematics, combined with my coursework background, prepares me to tutor elementary, middle, and high school students at a wide spectrum of levels. Specifically, I am a ready and enthusiastic tutor for students interested in support with basic math, pre-algebra, algebra I & II, trigonometry, geometry, pre-calculus, calculus AB, and calculus BC. My own mathematics coursework has extended most recently to linear algebra and multivariable calculus, due both to personal interest and to the specific requirements of Harvard's physics major track.

Currently an undergraduate at Harvard, I have long enjoyed sharing both my love of learning and the reserve of strategies that I've build up for overcoming academic challenges. In my experience, successful tutoring hinges on a flexible and dynamic teaching style, honed to each student's unique combination of strengths and struggles. There are many different ways to understand any concept or learn any skill. As a tutor, my goal is to find the unique approach that works for my student; we may not find it on the first go, but it's always there, and we WILL find it! Successful learning also hinges on a warm, welcoming, empathetic learning environment, and I strive to create that for my students, as I know that I learn best in such an environment myself.

Session format is flexible, and I am prepared to support each student in the way that they will find most useful. This may include homework review, test prep, lessons on confusing concepts, or general support.

I have tutored for several years, and, due to my wide array of academic interests, I have gained expertise tutoring in a broad range of subjects. My experience and coursework prepares me to tutor mathematics (pre-algebra, algebra, geometry, pre-calculus & trigonometry, calculus), physics, chemistry, biology, history (world, European and U.S.) French, and English & Language Arts.

My own academic path is deeply interdisciplinary: I am currently on track to graduate from Harvard in 2024 with a double-major in History and Chemistry & Physics. I have previously conducted research in magnetospheric physics, biochemical neuroscience, medieval European history, American agricultural history, history of sociology, and Soviet history. I am currently conducting research in optical biophysics and at the intersection of GIS mapping and medieval environmental history.

I have tutored students from first to eleventh grade, hailing from all kinds of academic and personal contexts. From 2017-2020, I tutored high school and middle school students in history, physics, math, or French, through the National Cathedral School's Peer Tutoring Program. From 2017-2020, I also tutored elementary-school and high-school students through For Love of Children, a D.C.-based non-profit organization committed to supporting children behind grade-level in English and math. Spring 2021, I conducted private tutoring in chemistry and history, working at the high-school age level. Over summers 2020 and 2021, I have tutored with EduMate NYC, working with a wide range of ages in math, English, and chemistry.

My own medical challenges have made me appreciate the value of an individualized teaching/learning experience. In this context, I have come to love both teaching and learning, and I have no doubt that both will represent integral elements of my career.

Sophia has been my tutor for all essay writing assignments and tasks for the past several years (at least 5 years), which includes coursework and application essays. She is extremely professional, kind, gentle, knowledgeable, and adapts her teaching style in a very tailored way to the student she is working with. In my experience, she is absolutely unique in the way in which she can take the essay content or structure that a student has in mind and, without throwing it out, put herself into the student's reference frame, and guide the student to rework or reframe it into a polished essay; moreover, even when this process requires significant changes, she manages to be empowering of the student the entire time, actually building their confidence while guiding them to improve their work. I say this from significant personal experience receiving exactly this kind of guidance from Sophia. I think part of what allows her to do this is she genuinely remains kind and humble the entire time, so her critiques and guidance are easy to accept and do not come across as harsh or in any way demeaning of the work I had done before meeting with her.

I should also mention that, having read some of her own writing, she is an exceptional writer herself and has significant experience in writing and tutoring analytical, creative, and scientific writing (I have come to her for help with all three types!). She also has a terrific intuition for how to structure an essay in a given context and purpose, which is something I particularly struggle with. As a final note, I would add that Sophia naturally teaches one how to write while guiding you to improve a particular essay, so you end up picking up her skill and experience as you work with her.

Having tried other tutors and attended writing workshops, etc., I can say with confidence that I have never found another writing tutor who comes close to Sophia--including in the quality of the finished products she helps create, degree to which she improves a student's own overall writing and organizational ability, and the way in which she tailors her approach to fit what is needed for a particular student, assignment, and even particular essay draft.
