こんにちは!りえと申します。 Hello! My name is Rie. I have been teaching Japanese since 2010. My past and present students are from many different countries, including the U.S., China, Taiwan, India, Israel, Italy, and Croatia and range from 9 to 75 years old. I have taught students, educators, business professionals, sports professionals, health care providers, artists, military personnel, and many others from all walks of life, and whether it is getting good grades, becoming proficient before their trips to Japan, or simply wanting to learn a new language, I have loved helping them reach their goals. I am an extremely patient and conscientious person and my teaching style is friendly, fun, and flexible. I tailor my lessons to each student's learning style, their needs and goals. I use Genki 1 and 2 textbooks and workbooks with most of my beginner to intermediate level students, unless other textbooks and/or learning resources are requested. During the lesson, my focus is generally on the grammar explanations and practice, as well as reading, and speaking practice. Homework is assigned after each lesson, and students are expected to work independently on vocabulary building, unless otherwise requested. I encourage all of my students to contact me between lessons if they have any questions, and I will try to respond within 24 hours. I am originally from Kure, which is about 20 miles southeast of Hiroshima. I went to Tsuda College in Tokyo and earned a degree in International Relations in 1986. I then moved to the U.S. and earned a master's degree in Library and Information Studies from University of California at Berkeley. I have worked in public, academic, and government libraries in various capacities both in Japan and the U.S. More recently I have worked at a local high school, supporting thousands of high school students and their parents. I am currently accepting students ages 14 and up. I am looking forward to meeting you!

I cannot believe I haven’t written a review before this. I’ve been learning with Rie for almost two years now, and it’s been a wonderful experience. Homework is manageable on top of my classes and her teaching style reminds me of a classroom. I chose to study under Rie because I knew that she was someone whose teaching would hold me accountable to continue progressing. I can say happily that was a great choice and I could not have picked a better instructor.
Rie is truly a wonderful teacher of the Japanese language. My daughter thoroughly enjoys her lessons with her
I’ve been studying Japanese off and on for almost 20 years. I had reached an upper intermediate level but I wanted to take my ability to a higher level so I started looking for a Japanese tutor. I feel really lucky to have found Rie. She’s a cool person who’s fun to work with. She’s patient and flexible and she always explains things in a way that is easy to understand. She’s as invested in my Japanese learning as I am and it’s hard to place a value on that kind of support and partnership. She also has good textbooks for people at more advanced levels. Without a doubt, my Japanese has improved more in the time I’ve been working with Rie than it has at any other time in all the years I’ve been studying it. If you’re an intermediate or advanced learner of Japanese and you’re looking to improve, Rie can absolutely help you. I couldn’t recommend her more highly.
