Many of the issues I’ve seen tutees run into, especially with mathematics, stems from a lack of confidence. They often believe that they are just not good at math and end of giving up before they try, making this a self-fulfilling prophecy. My tutoring method centers around “learning-by-doing” to gain confidence and teach core concepts at the same time while we build up to more difficult problems. Mathematical thinking takes time and a lot of head-scratching, and while I can not do the work for you, I am there to be a guiding hand that can help talk you through problems and examples and teach you how to study. I am open to tutoring anyone college age and below in any mathematics subject from Calculus and below. Once we meet for the first time, we can work out what best works for you in terms of learning methods (or, if you are a parent, what works best for your child).

I have years of experience teaching my peers and younger students mathematics, and I am prepared to aid in any way possible to patiently guide students through complex problems that they will come out not just knowing HOW to do but also the ideas behind WHY these solutions work.

### About

- Teaches students:
- Ages 5+
- Teaching since:
- 2012

I am a 2016 graduate of Denison University in Granville, OH. I spent much of high school and all of college tutoring others in Mathematics. I love working with students in a one-on-one setting in order to give my full attention to their success. I aim work with my tutees in a way that I can best discover how they learn, their strengths, and their weaknesses.

The day before a lesson, I like to be sent whatever material or problems that a student is working on so that I may go over it myself in order to make the most of the time in a session. I believe in learning by doing, but in that regard, I also aim to make sure students know not just HOW to solve a problem but WHY that solution works. My hope is to build up students’ mathematical knowledge while also teaching them the most effective ways to study and learn, making them more effective students even outside of our lessons.

#### Experience

##### Mathematics Department Tutor

Sep 2013 - Dec 2015At Denison University, I had weekly, one-on-one tutoring lessons with peers that were struggling with difficult concepts when they were unused to taking college level mathematics. I would go over their homework problems with them, help them understand the concepts in their textbooks, and help them review for their exams.

Sep 2014 - May 2015Studied ways to explain difficult mathematical concepts to individuals that are unfamiliar with the material. Culminated in presenting before the Mathematical Association of America on the topic of usage of mathematics and coding in the creation of art pieces.

### 1 Review

Write a Review**Calculus**· In studio

I have had a lot of tutors for mathematics (it just never clicks for me the way other subjects do!) over the years and Keenan was by far the best one. He managed to immediately figure out where I was intellectually and meet me there without making me feel like I was stupid at all. He was consistently kind, and came up with multiple ways to explain concepts I was having trouble with, and made sure that the answers he gave to my questions made complete sense to me before moving on. Keenan was even able to tame my anxiety the first time we met, and because of him I was able to pass calculus and get into graduate school! He even helped me come up with ways to ask my professor questions during class so that I didn't get left behind in lecture. I used to have a lot of trouble with this, since I was embarrassed and not sure that I would ask a question that made sense. Overall, Keenan was the best tutor I have ever had, and I am so grateful to him for helping me not only understand calculus, but start to enjoy it as well!
