I am passionate about Music and Music Education. It's rewarding for me to watch my students develop in their musical skill and enjoy making music more and more. My students range from the very young (5 years old) to school age children, to teens, and adults. My students benefit from my expertise in teaching Vocal and Piano music, my knowledge of Music Theory, and my encouraging teaching style. I have been involved in making music since I was a young child, and I have been teaching private students since I was a Music major at the University of Florida in 1982 when a fellow college student asked me to teach her voice lessons. I have a Music Education degree from the University of Florida; my major instrument was Voice, my minor was Piano. I taught as a public school music educator in Florida, California, and Tennessee between the years of 1983 to 1997. I taught private students after school in my classroom while I was a public school teacher, and from my home since 1997. My post-graduate continuing professional education includes Tennessee Arts Academy at Belmont University, Kodaly Pedagogy and Solfege Level 1 (vocal teaching techniques, do-re-mi, ear training), Orff-Schulwerk Music for Children Level 1 certification, Yamaha M.I.E. (Music In Education) Piano Lab certification. My professionalism and expertise are at your service. I will work together with you to insure an enjoyable and informative learning experience.
*** Lesson Details ***
A typical lesson in my studio would begin with a brief question/answer time with the student to learn how their week has gone, and how their music practice is progressing.
For PIANO LESSONS we begin with Technique including scales and dexterity exercises, then we play from the Lesson book and a Recital selection. I typically let the student play through the pieces they have prepared without interruption, then I call attention to corrections that need to be made, I demonstrate the correction, and then ask the student to play the piece again. After that we go over the Theory assignments, and do Ear Training exercises. I am comfortable teaching from a variety of different methods courses. The methods course is chosen according to the student's interest. I never require a piano student to continue using books that are not inspiring. There so many methods courses available, that a student may always be able to have methods books they LOVE.
In my SINGING LESSONS we also begin with a recap of the student's week. Then we continue with Warm Up exercises to prepare the student's voice for the lesson. Then we study Sight Singing and Solfege Singing (do-re-mi-fa-sol-la-ti-do) to increase the student's listening skills. After that the student sings their selections. Like I do in Piano lessons, I listen to the pieces they have prepared without interruption, then I call attention to corrections that need to be made, I demonstrate the correction, and then ask the student to sing the piece again. I am comfortable teaching many styles of vocal music including classical, Broadway, pop, rock, and Christian.
For MUSIC THEORY lessons, the study material is chosen according to the student's interest and age. Topics include notation, chord structure, chord progression, melodic structure, and harmony. I also incorporate Music Listening in the Music Theory lesson in order to learn from the masters in many styles of music. My Music Theory students will also have the opportunity to develop composition and songwriting skills if they desire.
My teaching style is structured and friendly, keeping the student's goals and interests at the forefront. I enjoy motivating students to reach their highest potential.
After 3 to 6 months in my studio my students will see improvement in their musical technique, ear training, music reading, notation, and knowledge. They will be preparing recital pieces for an upcoming performance. I provide three Studio Class performances (February, June, October) and one recital opportunity (December) a year. Most importantly, the student's love and appreciation of music will be growing.

Great technique, friendly, and fun to work with
Detailed oriented, well organized and very experienced
I have been living in Nashville since one and a half year. Julie helps me to remember my vocabulary from school in Germany an I have learned a lot of new things in her class. She is an excellent teacher and a wonderful person.
Julie is the best piano instructor my boys have had. Her theory based teaching has them learning pieces in record time - and her approach to theory isn't boring. They can now hear a song on the radio, recognize the chords and improvise on their own. She is engaging, encouraging and willing to explore the type of music they enjoy. She adapts her instruction methods based on individual personalities. Your child will not just learn to play piano, they will learn to appreciate music, composers and acquire knowledge that will assist in any instrument they play.+ Read More
Julie is wonderful! I'm an adult student who has been working with her for about a year. I took voice lessons from childhood through college, then life took over and I pretty much stopped singing. When I decided I wanted to get back into it again, I contacted Julie. I was nervous, but she put me at ease right away. This past year working with her has been so much fun. She helped me prepare for choral auditions, and I got accepted to sing with the Vanderbilt Community Chorus. We pick the repertoire together, so I'm never working on something I'm not interested in. She has helped me master my breathing technique and discover a richer and freer tone. I highly recommend her!+ Read More

Great first lesson
Julie is an excellent teacher and professional. Her knowledge base is incredible; she absolutely is a master. She knows exactly how to reach my 5-year-old and my 11-year-old, and teach them where they are. She stretches them, and it is amazing to see how far they've come in just a short while. Julie teaches them piano in a multitude of ways: they listen, they play, they move, they sing, they read, they study, they write. It's so much more than just sitting at the piano and playing notes. My children are learning to MAKE MUSIC and it is a beautiful thing. I'm very happy we found Julie Lopez.+ Read More
Ms. Julie is a great teacher. My daughter loves taking voice lessons from her.
We love Julie! I have a degree in music and used to teach guitar so I know what to expect from a good teacher. Julie is wonderful! She is organized, professional, knowledgeable and (most importantly) a good communicator with our children. Our son was never into piano lessons with previous teachers. After switching to Julie, he actually like piano lessons. Our daughter is very driven and loves piano which she has been studying for years now. Julie also excels in pushing her at a much higher level. It's nice to have a teacher who can push the advanced student as well as inspire the early student. She has even started voice lessons with our son who loves every minute of his lesson. We can't praise Julie enough. Quit looking for other teachers and hire Julie!+ Read More

My niece Ava absolutely loved her 1st lesson and is so excited about coming back...Thank U Julie !!
My daughter's first lesson was "just a trial"... to see if she could handle the instruction. Julie was exceptionally professional and encouraging while navigating constructive criticism (of our sensitive vocalist). Excellent interaction and guidance as well as "Mom to Mom" direction on specific skill-set/practice tools. We're thrilled to have had Julie as our first encounter at "Takelessons.com" - she's an asset to the instructional community and now (if she can put up with us) our family! Thank you Miss Julie. :)+ Read More

I would give Mrs. Julie more than five stars if possible! She is great!!!
Julie is great! Awesome and fun personality. This was my very first lesson and she really made me feel at ease.

Met with Julie and stayed just to see how it would go, it went great and she worked great with my son he can't wait for his next lesson.
My daughter comes out more positive and smiling from the lessons. She looks forward to them. Julie is great with teenagers. Highly recommend!
Love learning with Julie! She encourages you to make choices about how, and what you learn, which is awesome, especially as an adult student.
I think I found the right teacher for me and will excel my English!
I just had my first piano lesson with Julie and so far I am thrilled! She was energetic and enthusiastic and explained things very well to me. I'm excited to move forward and see where this takes me.
Best teacher I ever had. I've been around a long time and through all my years of school, she's the best teacher I've ever had. She continues to structure lessons to fit my skill level and has for the three years I taken from her. I have learned not only about how to play the piano, but about music, about appreciating music. She's always upbeat, always stays the correct amount of time, and I am always inspired during a lesson, to become the best piano player I can, even at my advanced age and with a clear lack of talent.+ Read More

I have been taking my teenage daughter to Julie's house for the past several weeks now, my daughter looks forward to working with Julie, no prompting from me and this is helping her find her own "identity". A positive experience for both of us. Many, many thanks Julie!+ Read More
Julie is an excellent piano teacher. As an adult student she keeps the lessons interesting for me. I have learned so much in the past year. My bucket list is being fulfilled!
Julie is a professional Instructor who quickly identifies the level of her students.
Her energy and sense of humor are contagious and stimulating.
When we laugh we increase endorphin in our brain which helps us to remember what we learn.
Thank you Julie for instruction and the pleasure of learning. :)
Julie is the BEST!! I took lessons as a child, but had not taken any lessons in over 10 years when I first began lessons with Julie. Almost immediately she was able to help me recall everything I had learned when I was younger. Very knowledgeable and encouraging, makes each lesson a joy! Highly recommended for those who are serious about learning the piano (or anything else I'm sure!).+ Read More
Julie is a superb piano instructor. She instructed my son on the piano after him having a very strict instructor. She was very encouraging and knowledgeable. We all love her and she is a great teacher.
Julie is our first experience with a piano teacher. She has been instructing my somewhat shy 6 year old for about 9 months now. She is amazing with my daughter. She is very encouraging and stays right on her level while pushing her to expand her knowledge in music. I couldn't be more pleased in our first experience. Julie even had my daughter performing in front of an audience just 4 months after her first lesson. A memory my child will have forever.
Flexible scheduling, and my overall experience has been positive and professional. The training has been paced to help me progress with tone and ear as well as overall singing.
Great Singing Coach
Julie has been wonderful to me. She is honest and is full of energy which is contagious. I have always wanted to learn how to sing and I am still nervous before each lesson but Julie sets my mind at ease and makes my lessons fun. She has given me the encouragement that I needed to be brave enough to tackle this. I would recommend Julie to anyone who was ready to take the leap and go for it.
Julie is a superb instructor who is very encouraging. My 1st lesson was not only a dream come true, but very clear and so much fun.
Julie has been a wonderful voice instructor for my son. He looks forward to his lessons and always learns something new and benefical to improve his singing technique. She is very professional and also makes it fun to learn. I highly recommend her.
Piano / Keyboard
I have been enjoying my time learning to play with the help of Julie. Though I was adopted, my birth mother was a Piano Teacher.
