Want to learn to speak Spanish? Sign ASL? I would love to be a part of your journey! I am a patient, and friendly person, who is passionate about language learning!
SPANISH: I use my own personal learning experience mixed with a communicative approach to create a teaching method for my Spanish students. My Spanish teaching method focuses on the development of these four skills: speaking, listening, reading, and then writing. Do you have specific goals? Great! Or are you learning just to be able to speak any and all that you can? Awesome! I teach beginner and intermediate and am a conversation partner and tutor for students more advanced! Also be prepared to be challenged to get involved with the Latin American culture around you!
ASL: My lessons will give you a strong foundation in Sign, and then a few training wheels until you feel confident in what you know, and can converse about various real-life topics. My teaching method utilizes much of Deaf professor Dr. Bill Vicars' approach--with signed conversation in each lesson beginning with high frequency concepts. Each lesson is full of new signs, grammar, conversation, Deaf culture tidbits, and more.
I fell in love with language when in 2010 I lived, studied, and worked abroad in Colombia, South America. There I studied Spanish, worked with Deaf students, and taught Spanish speakers English. It was such an enriching experience that upon returning to the USA, I decided to fully surround myself with culturally diverse individuals and continue my learning journey.
One of the major differences between learning a language in a classroom and having a personal instructor is that one-on-one help you will receive --- specific to your level, learning style, and language goals. I will help you stop feeling nervous, renew your motivation, and get you communicating in a new language in no time!!
In only a year & a half I've taught over 50 students the wonderful language of Spanish or ASL. As the owner of my own business Culture Connection, LLC, my goal is to see those light bulb moments, to help you reach your personal goals, and to help you connect better to the culture around you! Learning can be fun! Take lessons with me and you'll be smiling the whole way, and I send resources along with each lesson to make sure you're fully equipped!Show More

My daughter absolutely enjoys her time with Joy. She has always had a desire to learn ASL but there were no consistent opportunities for such an education. When she found out that ASL would meet her foreign language requirement, she started searching and found Take Lessons, which led her to Joy. Joy has a teaching style that has increased my daughter's passion for ASL...so much so, that she intends to continue her ASL education through the college level. If you or your child are serious about learning ASL, I highly recommend Joy. She should be in the schools with this.Show More

I am currently enrolled in Joy's online Spanish lessons. In the beginning, I was a bit apprehensive about receiving private tutoring over the internet, however my apprehensiveness quickly diminished following my first lesson with Joy. Joy has been a wonderful teacher. Her level of patience is remarkable. Also, the way she presents material is in a concise manner makes learning very attainable. She is very passionate and prideful in her work. She is also always able and willing to answer any questions I have either during our lesson, or on a day we do not meet. Joy is a very talented teacher. She has truly made me desire on continuing more Spanish even after I graduate college. If there was one thing I could change, it would be for us to meet more than twice a week. But, above all I look forward to my lessons with Joy every week.Show More
