I have taught professionally for 18 years, nine as a tutor. What began as undergraduate work study later bloomed into my own part time private tutoring gig, with great success. From elementary arithmetic to trigonometry, I've helped many an overwhelmed student raise their GPA. I have a BA with honors from CSUSB, where I was personally requested to tutor my peers in linguistics. My tutoring experience has predominantly been in math and English, though I am open to other subjects because...
My teaching has taken me from museum galleries to working farms, and mountain trails to public schools. Whether I hold feldspar by a stream, a paint brush in a school room, or a salamander in an animal gallery, I see people learning best when they smile as they go. I make it a point to see that both occur. My sessions are always a safe, supportive environment in which mistakes are an essential, acceptable part of learning.
I learn because I love to, I teach because I'm good at it, and I tutor because it creates the greatest opportunity for success. If not knowing is a dark room, I'm happy to turn on the light, but happier teaching people how to find the switch for themselves next time. The true payoff for me is witnessing others realize they can achieve what they didn't think they could. I love that!
I teach painting, drawing and various forms of mixed media to grades 2-6. Empowerment is the key to success here, and art is a magnificent medium, as it gives 100% agency to every single student!
Directed education department, training up to 50 historians how to engage, entertain and teach school children, parents and teachers, outdoors, in all manners of weather, all with a smile.
Tutored 1-4 students weekly, primarily in math, but ranging from English to science. Lots of very happy parents!
Split my time teaching and overseeing historical programs, supervising staff and guests. Revised and managed overnight program, teaching dancing and tomahawk throwing!
Tutored up to 9 students weekly, ages 7-16, primarily in math, to high commendations by director of programming. Lots of happy students!
Led school groups on outdoor science hikes, teaching ecology, conservation, geology and biodiversity. I was the guy that would catch the gopher snake and make a biology lesson out of it!
Facilitated multiple interactive interpretive historical workshops with school groups, primarily 5th grade. In a costume, musket in hand, I led hordes of excited students into "battle" for our nation's Independence!
Led school tours on educational field trips, teaching tree science, farm facts, and animal husbandry. Tractors, tree rings, and live animals made for lots of fun with young school kids!
Taught school groups and the public in multiple educational capacities, primarily with live animals, but ranging from museum exhibits to outreach programs. Made it a personal challenge to help dozens of people overcome their fear of snakes. The world isn't so scary when we know stuff!+ Read More
My daughter always had a great deal of trouble with math at all levels - arithmetic, Algebra, and Geometry. Jon tutored my daughter for several years, in our home, in Arithmetic, Algebra I and II, and Geometry. He definitely shares responsibility for her graduation from Beaumont High School with a class rank of 7th out of about 575 fellow students. Jon is very flexible in his teaching, and excels at figuring out what aspect of math is causing confusion for the student. He is very patient, and is able to rephrase and express concepts in different ways to get the point across. Fantastic tutor!+ Read More

I had the pleasure of being tutored by Jon for many years, and with his help I was able to excel in school. Jon is an excellent tutor who is extremely patient and willing to explain things as many times as it takes to understand the concept. He knows how to make learning fun and teaches concepts using the students interests. I highly recommend Jon to anyone who needs any sort of help in school.+ Read More
I met John about 8 years ago. I decided to home school my son due to the problems his school was having. I had John Harmon tutor my son for about 2 years twice a week in English and Math. He was a excellent teacher for him. He made learning fun and not so boring. My son learned more through him than he did at any school. I would truly recommend him.+ Read More
I worked with Jon Harmon in a museum education department (I am now director of education at a different museum) and I have observed him at other education jobs also. Jon brings a passion and enthusiasm to his work that inspires and encourages students. He brings sometimes dry subject matter to life, with humor and with a deep understanding of the content. I can highly recommend him.+ Read More
As a parent, I could not be happier with Jon who tutor both of my boys. I would highly recommend him.
Jon is very knowledgeable and professional. He is great with kids of all ages. I highly recommend him.
Jon is a fantastic tutor. He helped my brother and I in various subjects while in middle school and high school. His knowledge base is vast, and his personality can be best described as simply awesome. This combination allows Jon to tutor in a manner that conveys all the important principles and concepts of a subject, into an easy to understand curriculum. Jon can and will go above and beyond the definition of a tutor. He was always readily available. As stated initially Jon is a fantastic tutor that would be an invaluable asset to a student struggling in his/her academics, as well as a parent that would like to asit their child in their academic success!+ Read More
