I started my own American Sign Language journey in 2012 where I found a passion for the language and the culture. Since then I have been studying, tutoring, and using the language in several different avenues of my life. During my lessons I incorporate the history of this language and information about Deaf Culture to ensure my students have a well rounded knowledge on the subject. I hold a Certificate in American Sign Language Interpreting, and completed a degree in ASL and Deaf Studies. I'm educated on the history of the language, linguistics and discourse, Deaf culture, and have beginner interpreter training experience. My goal is to not simply earn a living, but to live a meaningful life. Whatever your reason for wanting to learn I will be there every step of the way as you begin your Sign Language journey. Chelsy is the absolute best! I have been taking lessons for several months and she is incredibly patient, helpful and encouraging. My mother was intimidated to try ASL but after getting her together with Chelsy, she now loves it!
Chelsy manages to put a great amount of information into one 30 minute lesson, and it never feels rushed. I get language, receptivity, and fingerspelling practice, learn new vocabulary and culture, and review previously learned words every time. Chelsy is very intentional about curating the lesson to you and makes sure to incorporate things that you have previously learned, so you can always practice. She clearly cares a lot about teaching ASL and deaf culture. She is very patient and will work with you at your pace but also challenge you within your limits.
Great first experience. I am looking forward to more!
