Lessons with me are highly interactive. Active learning is what I'm striving for; an engaged student can learn. As many a professor of mine has said, math is not a spectator sport. It is learned by actively engaging with the concepts and the mechanics.

I focus on finding out where the student is in terms of understanding, and meeting them intellectually wherever they may be. A lesson with me is truly where there is no such thing as a dumb question. Understanding why things are the way they are is central to my approach. Understanding is a "force multiplier" that takes a student far beyond mere rote memorization of rules that are otherwise quickly forgotten.

Of course, the goal is to be able to demonstrate understanding, which typically requires being able to solve problems. Once understanding of a concept seems to be emerging, I am happy to help guide the student through a variety of exercises to give the student the confidence that they "really get it", and can work problems on their own.

Somewhat more bluntly, I am not here to spoon-feed answers. I seek to make sure that the student understands what's going on, and can demonstrate as much on his or her own.

I am patient, and I thoroughly understand that math is both a new language, and a difficult discipline, that takes time to master. I'm comfortable explaining things in as many ways as necessary so that we eventually see the light come on.

About Andrew M.

I am both experienced and patient as a teacher. I have clear memories of what it was like to learn new things for the first time in math, and so I empathize with the student who may be wrestling with new and different ideas.

I began teaching back in college in the early 1980s, when I was a teaching assistant for calculus. My own calculus professor suggested that if I really wanted to find out if I understood the subject, that I should try teaching it! The experience was an eye opener, and a wonderful one at that. Since then, I have taught both privately (one-on-one) and in the classroom at a wide array of levels, and I genuinely enjoy teaching. Math classes I have taught range from pre-algebra all the way through calculus and beyond.

A particularly gratifying teaching experience has been mentoring my own daughter through her math education. She has thus far flourished, and has taken up Data Theory as her major at UCLA, where she is currently a freshman.

I have a Bachelor's, Master's and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, and have been a practicing engineer for over 25 years. I was driven into engineering in no small part because I loved math. Shortly after completing my Ph.D., I had the pleasure of teaching for a year at Tulane University, where I taught applied physics classes at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. I teach because I enjoy it immensely. I get to share some of the perspective that I've gained as a practicing engineer, and watch as the "light comes on" for my students.
