Translation and language teaching has always been a strong interest of mine. Teaching a difficult language like Japanese and motivating students to keep up with learning can be a challenge, but one that I find rewarding and worthwhile. In terms of tutoring experience, I was a tutor and class assistant for the Oberlin College Japanese department during my undergraduate program and have continued private Japanese tutoring since graduating. I am a professional writer and translator in English and Japanese, with bylines in The Japan Times and other media outlets. An original article of mine published in The Japan Times is currently used for the Kansai Gaidai University entrance exam. I recently moved to New York City in order to pursue a master's degree at New York University in Media, Culture and Communication. I grew up in Tokyo, Japan with a Japanese father and an American mother, so I was raised to be completely bilingual in Japanese and English. I do Japanese copywriting and translation professionally, as well as quality checking translated scripts for film directors and screenwriters.
