***Teaching Philosophy***
I am a fun, enthusiastic teacher who cares deeply about her students and their growth as musicians and people. I believe teaching works best when students are relaxed, having fun, and are actively engaged in the learning process. It is also important that you practice what we work on during lessons at home if you wish to see real progress. I will work hard along with you and ask for your input during lessons; we are partners in the learning process.

I also believe each student is unique, and take differences in learning style, interests, goals, and personality into account when I teach. Whichever you choose to study (voice, piano, or
both), I tailor lessons to suit each student's needs. I would like to enable you to meet your musical goals, whatever they may be.

***Lesson Details and Recommendations***

Singing voice: I teach classical vocal technique with an emphasis on the body-mind connection. Through the course of my training, I have studied the Alexander Technique, which is a method that has been used by actors, musicians, and athletes to find optimal body-mind coordination to achieve better results. The voice is the only instrument that is literally your body, so we will be using these tools to improve posture, breathing, and resonance. By learning a healthy vocal technique, you can expect improved tone quality, an expanded vocal and dynamic range, greater resonance, increased agility, improved diction, and more. Healthy vocal technique can be applied to any genre, and I teach students who are studying a wide variety of music, but classical and musical theater repertoire is my area of expertise.

Speaking voice: I have had great success helping students who come to me for help with their speaking voices. As the speaking voice and singing voice use the same set of muscles, the same set of functional principles apply. I work with students to improve their posture, breathing, and breath support when speaking, as well as clear diction, better pacing, and conveying emotion and meaning. These tools also lead to increased confidence when speaking.

Piano: I am also an established piano teacher and have had much success teaching beginning and intermediate students from ages 4 to 91 in various styles of music. I believe it is important for students to learn how to read and interpret written music as well as understand the structure behind it, so in addition to learning musical basics, I incorporate music theory into lessons. I encourage my piano students to learn how to read lead sheets and create chord accompaniments as well, which opens the door for comfortably playing in all sorts of styles sooner than would be possible by classical approaches alone. I also work on improvisation and songwriting with my piano students, if desired.

***Lesson Recommendations***
I offer lessons in 30, 45, and 60 minute increments. These are the *minimum* lesson lengths recommended. Longer lessons are more beneficial, except in the case of children with smaller attention spans. A 60 minute lesson is the best choice for serious students (teenagers or adults).

Voice:
Ages <12 years: 30 minutes
Ages 12 and up: 45 minutes

Piano:
Ages <7 years: 30 minutes
Ages 7 and up: 45 minutes

Combination Lesson:
Ages <12 years: 45 minutes
Ages 12 and up: 60 minutes

*Please note: I do not reserve regular lesson times in my schedule for students who cannot commit to weekly lessons. With students who wish to take less frequent lessons, I recommend the flex plan, with lessons to be scheduled as we go at our mutual convenience.

***Educational Background***
Elizabeth holds an M.M. in vocal performance from West Virginia University, where she was featured in numerous WVU Opera Theatre productions and was the soprano soloist with WVU Choirs in Faure's Requiem and Handel's Lord Nelson Mass. While at WVU, Elizabeth resumed taking lessons at the piano, which she had previously studied for many years, and exceeded the piano proficiency level required by the university. She also holds a B.A. in music and international studies from Emory University. Elizabeth has studied and performed internationally, both at the American Institute of Musical Studies in Graz, Austria, where she was the recipient of the Lemmonds Scholarship, and at the Bel Canto program in conjunction with L'Arena di Verona opera company in Verona, Italy.

As a graduate assistant at WVU, Elizabeth taught voice lessons to music education and performance majors as well as a course on vocal pedagogy. After graduating, she served as adjunct faculty, in which capacity she taught vocal repertoire and opera theater. She has maintained a private studio since 2005, in which she instructs students in voice and piano. She has also held past teaching positions with the Meridee Winters School of Music and Woodland Country Day School.

Elizabeth was most recently seen as Joanie in The Full Monty at Candlelight Theatre in Delaware. Other recent performances include June in Musical of Musicals: The Musical and Peaches/ Baby Jane in Jerry Springer: The Opera with Bootless Stageworks in Wilmington, DE, solo performances with the New Voices Cabaret at the Society Hill Playhouse in Center City, and Woman 2 in My Way: A Musical Tribute to Frank Sinatra with Mainstage Center for the Arts in Blackwood, NJ. She has performed numerous leading roles with Philadelphia area Gilbert and Sullivan companies, most notably appearing as Angelina in Trial by Jury with The Savoy Company, winning Best American Production at the 2011 International Gilbert and Sullivan Festival. Her G &S performance credits include the roles of Patience (Patience), Yum-Yum (The Mikado), Rose Maybud (Ruddigore), Phyllis (Iolanthe), and Fiammetta (Gondoliers). Additionally, she has pioneered roles in new operas, including Gwendolyn in The Crowded House at the 2010 Philly Fringe Festival and Zelda in Black Horses with OperaDelaware at the 2009 Wilmington Fringe Festival.

Elizabeth has been great with my daughter. She makes vocal lessons fun! Elizabeth is always very supportive and give kudos for her efforts which builds up my daughter's confidence. This is a great approach as it often opens up the child's desire to push themselves and solidifies that it is ok to make mistakes. We are very fortunate to have found Elizabeth.

This is my second review. As you can tell my the date of my first review, I've taken lessons with Benjamin for about three and a half years. I can honestly say he is the best guitar teacher I've had. He will help you understand the music and you will think like a musician!

Regarding my methods of instructing piano students, I use the Middle
C method for players regardless of playing level. Those who are more
advanced use triads as well. My overall goal as a teacher is to work
with my students and give them the skills that are necessary to play

Bastien, and/or Alfred Publications. A writing tablet compliments
presented lesson material too.
My instruction correlates with the age, the musical background, and

Born and raised in New Jersey, I have been involved with music for many years. The instruments that I play include Trumpet, French Horn, Handbells, Organ, Voice, and Piano. I received my formal education at Moravian College in Bethlehem, PA, which is where I earned a B.A. degree with Honors in Music. In order to obtain my Honors, I chose to develop elementary lessons on Chinese folk music. In my Junior year of college, I performed a dual media recital in both Voice and Piano, and for my Senior year recital, I focused on giving a Vocal performance. These recitals demonstrated the musical talent and techniques that I had developed throughout my experience at college. In addition to my musical experiences in college, I have also learned about various pedagogical approaches through both my vocal studies as well as my studies on the keyb
oard. There is always more than one approach to teaching musical concepts! As a musician, I have performed in both the Bethlehem/Allentown area and the central New Jersery area. In addition, I have sung as a member of the Princeton Pro Musica and sat as a member on the executive board of the Princeton Girlchoir. We are very pleased with how Michael approaches piano lessons for our 4 1/2 year old son. He incorporates singing and movement into the lessons and keeps him engaged throughout. Great patience and sense of humor as well.

Michael is a great teacher. He focuses on understanding of concepts. For more fluent play we always need to practice a lot, but if we do not understand the concepts behind musical notation, we do not even know where to begin. He is also very encouraging and guides us out of mistakes in a way that the logic sticks. Highly recommended - you will enjoy learning with him

Lessons with Mike Mraz was a Christmas present from my son, Andrew. I enjoy singing, yet have never had occasion to study music or to take private lessons. Mike helped me clarify my goals: breath control, vocal mechanics, reading music and having fun. He graciously sent me some primer materials and located sheet music for several of my favorite Broadway show tunes. Our five 45-minute sessions together were both instructive and enjoyable. As I approach age 70, I can check "work with a voice coach" on my "Bucket List." Kudos for Mike!

After 30 years I finally decided to learn how to play drums. Kevin clearly knows what he's doing in any genre of drumming! It seemed like every lesson he had a clear/thorough plan, didn't stress me out by teaching to rapidly, or bore me by going to slowly. A very solid teacher.

My name is Gary. I started out playing the Bagpipe in High School as we were the "Highlanders" and had a bagpipe band as part of the marching band. I competed in solo competitions played my way to the top. As I will be 60 this year, I have been playing for 45 years and teaching full time for the last 20 years. I am very fortunate to be making a good living doing work that I love to do.

You need 3 things to learn the bagpipe. The first thing that you don't need is a set of bagpipes to get started. That purchase happens with most of my students between the 8th and the 12th month of lessons. My average student will spend between $1500 and $2000 on their pipes. Start saving now. The only thing that you need are a Practice Chanter, a book and 30 minutes with me once a week. I have the Practice Chant

I've been playing the piano since I was seven years old. After going to college and studying music education, I started teaching piano and have fallen in love with this job. I love music and I love sharing it with others.

Lesson Details
Each lesson from the very beginning includes some technique, whether that is p
entascales (5-note scales), full scales and chords, etudes, etc. Then we work on repertoire, learning new songs which challenge the student to expand his/her musicianship skills, with beginners using a lesson book while intermediate and advanced students become familiar with the traditional body of piano literature.
For beginners, theory is taught using accompanying theory books. For more intermediate/advanced students, theory is incorporated into the lesson using the music the student is studying.
Composing can be added into the lesson when the student is ready. The student is guided through the process of writing a song and then enters it into the computer and prints it out for their very own copy. When enough students have completed original compositions, I host a composition recital where students can play their creations.

As a "(much) older student", and former high school teacher, I am very impressed with Jennifer. Every lesson begins with the basics- scales and chords, then on to technique and theory, using pieces that I've selected myself to build my repertoire. Jennifer has a very calming and matter-of-fact manner, which I love, and her knowledge of musical history and way of casually imparting it is a pleasure. I see myself taking lessons with her for a long time to come, and would recommend her HIGHLY to students of all ages and ability levels.

My son started taking lessons with Ms. H. at the age of 8. He had no prior piano experience, but showed a lot of interest in wanting to learn about it. He is doing absolutely amazing and has been a part of a piano festival and recitals. Ms. H. has been wonderful. She is patient, fun, and challenges him when she knows he can do better. She makes the whole experience enjoyable. He's very comfortable with her and enjoys his time at the lessons. He cannot wait to play what he just learned as soon as we return home from the lessons. He has learned so much in a short period of time, and he continues to flourish. I highly recommend Ms. H. for piano lessons at any age. She is a fabulous teacher!

My daughter started taking piano with Ms. Herring at 7, year and a half ago. Neither my husband nor me play, so I was nervous that I will not be able to help my child with homework, but I had nothing to worry about. Ms. Herring is so good at explaining that I was able to keep up and learn along with my daughter. She makes it exiting for beginner, but also will not let “less than perfect” song slide. Not only did my daughter benefited from this in terms of learning music, but in her confidence as well. It great to see your child play song and then reinterpret it her way and give little performance for the family. Her younger brother just started in September and he is already ready to play little duets with his sister. My kids personalities are polar extremes, but Ms. Herring found a unique approach to each and my son proclaiming that he will keep “taking piano lessons until he graduates from High School” that’s like 12 more years ☺

Allison taught my daughter for 4 years. We found her to be patient and nurturing, and she was able to keep my daughter motivated, which is not always easy, since my daughter quickly becomes frustrated when things don't come to her right away. Allison is great with kids and has a knack for keeping lessons fun, even while she's challenging students to be their best. The recitals were a real highlight for us. They gave our daughter a real goal to work for, and as we got to know the other families over the years, it was fun to watch their kids improving too.

Grace is a great piano teacher. She teaches at our home.and is always on time. She is quite knowledgeable. Grace is patient with kids. My 6 year old daughter loves her. I highly recommend Grace.
