Lessons are tailored according to the student's ability. Method books are generally encouraged but are supplemented by materials based on student interest and teacher recommendation. Adaptive materials can be created based on student need.

I have been teaching piano for many years and my skill set focuses on helping students gain a solid technique with the piano.
Having a jazz/ pop background, my piano skills are also proficient in chord structure playing.
I have had students of all ages and abilities. For my students under an adolescent age, I like to use fun books and games to help them learn and provide the lesson with a fun & child-friendly approach. For my adult students, I believe that it is important to establish goals and be realistic about their expectations.
I am a graduate of The University of The arts with a BA in music performance. The University of The Arts has allowed me to gain a reputable amount of performance and educational work. In my training at the University was able to concentrate on many styles of performance such as classical technique as well as Broadway and jazz. With that in mind, it is also important to stay current on today’s music as well. Music has allowed me to travel the world with various groups and perform with musicals greats like the Philly Pops, bassist Gerald Veasly and the great Bernard “Pretty “ Purdie. I have taught voice and piano for high school students entering college for music. My experience in teaching is not only with high school students but spans all ages. After completing college I continued my training with Mrs. Jackie’s Piano Fun Class for
ages 4-6. This gave me confidence to complete training for The Music Class and various other infant and toddlers music programs. Currently I have many adult students, some learning for performance reasons and others to just have fun with playing. One of my theory’s behind music training is “you must love the music you play”. It may be something new but always something for you.
*** Lesson Details *** Motivation and commitment are important in my lessons. I believe with these two things and proper encouragement for your teacher every student is a winner! I like to start my lesson by assessing what skills and goals each student has or would like to reach for within their lesson. It also important to talk about you expectations for me as the teacher and what tools you will need going forward. (Music books, songs, tape recording etc…). I lessons to be enjoyable but also productive. I use lots of games and techniques to help each student learn

Lauren was very skillful at what she does and this conveys well in the lessons with her. I learned a lot from Lauren in my time with her but I would prefer the lessons to be a little more organized. All in all a good experience, Thank you Lauren.
January 6, 2015
Lauren is the real deal. Point blank period. I initially signed up for singing lessons, but she has helped me with piano, music theory, and other skills as well. She has a much more wholesome approach for developing as an artist than simply a linear "sing these notes" type of lesson.
Lauren is a good balance of stern and silly. She has a great sense of humor, so I feel comfortable singing & playing for her (even if my skills are limited and sound like a dying horse). However, that doesn't mean you just goof around. She takes it very seriously and pushes you as a student. I couldn't recommend Lauren more.
I have been teaching piano for 30 years. I specialize in beginners because I feel that is where my strength lies. I using various method books, matching the student with the best book. Each lesson introduces something new. In addition, it's fun!
I have been singing for as long as I can remember. It is my very favorite activity. I have transformed my love of singing into a career.
I have been teaching music lessons for over 25 years. When you study with me you will have the advantage of that experience. I have extensive experience teaching students of all ages. Throughout my teaching career I have taught students with varied backgrounds and diverse needs. If you are a person who was told not to sing by your music teacher, don't give up! I have taught many children and adults to match pitches and improve their singing voices.
I earned a Bachelor of Music in Music Education from Moravian College and a Master of Music in Vocal Performance from Temple University. While at Temple, I studied standard vocal repertoire and Early Music. I have also completed graduate course
s in Early Childhood and Elementary Education at West Chester University.
I served on the faculty of Suburban Music School for 17 years where I taught voice, piano and recorder lessons. I also directed the Children’s Choir and the Women’s Choir. I was formerly on the faculty of Delaware County Community College where I taught courses in the Music Department; and of Temple Music Prep where I instituted, developed and maintained a vocal program at Temple University’s Ambler Campus.
In addition to teaching I was employed for eleven years as a chorister at Christ Church Christiana Hundred in Greenville, DE where I have had the opportunity to sing for such notable conductors as John Rutter, Sir David Wilcox, Sir Philip Ledger, Stephen Cleobury, and James O’Donnell. Previous choral work has included singing for Dr. Ifor Jones and for Michael Korn. I perform in solo and chamber music recitals throughout the Philadelphia area and in Cape May, NJ and with a Celtic group called Celtic Women and Friends.
*** Lesson Details *** Voice Lessons
When you study voice with me, you will start with the basics - posture, breathing and tone production. If you have studied before, we will review these areas and brush up on anything that needs work. The next step is to learn some vocal exercises to warm up and develop your voice. When the exercises are going well, we will begin to work on songs. You will need to learn some classical songs because they help to develop your voice, but we will also work on the kind of music you like best. In addition to songs, we will work on solfege (do, re, mi, etc.) which helps to train your ear and to improve your sightreading ability. If you don't know how to read music I will teach you that. If you read music but have some gaps in your knowledge, we will fill those in.
I teach what is called bel canto (beautiful singing). It is a healthy vocal technique that will help you avoid vocal problems. When you learn to sing with this technique, you can sing any style of music you want. After a few months of study, you should be able to tell that your voice is growing stronger, that you have better breath control, and that your range is increasing.
Although I have high expectations of my students, I am relaxed and friendly. If you love to laugh, we will enjoy that together!
When you study piano with me you will enjoy playing a variety of songs from your lesson book. As you advance, we may add a repertoire book which increases the number and variety of songs you play. There are many excellent piano methods. I use different methods for different students, depending on their needs.
Lessons will include posture and proper hand position, warm-ups, songs and music theory. Music theory is the study of notation and how music is put together. You will have a workbook with exercises for this study. If there is a particular style of music you would like to play, we will look for music at your level to add to your lesson. After a few months of study, you should know how to read basic notation and be able to play a number of songs. You will also have increased your knowledge of musical notation and harmony.
I expect my students to practice in preparation for their lesson every week. I am relaxed and friendly, so that should help to put you at your ease.
*** Studio Equipment *** Piano, music stand, stereo equip, seating for parents
*** Specialties *** I specialize in teaching the bel canto style singing. With this technique, a person can sing any style of music she or he chooses.
My granddaughter Kayla really enjoyed her first singing lesson. She was a bit nervous at first, but Barbara made her feel relaxed. Kayla felt that Barbara was patient with her and answered her many questions. Kayla is looking forward to next week and thing she can learn to help her sing better.
December 15, 2018
My daughter never had singing lessons before. Barbara is great with at explaining things to her. Great experience so far!
I teach students who have no prior music training or who have taken a break from lessons and want to progress in their ability to play piano.
Learn to love playing the piano from the inside out--by understanding the fundamentals so you can create and recreate music for personal enjoyment and to share with others. Joining children, youth, and adults in developing your musical talents and gifts is my privelege. I teach beginner-intermediate piano students. I tailor the focus and styles of music to your needs and preferences and include training for success.
I am a life-long musician with a music degree (vocal and keyboards) from Messiah College. I also direct the music and worship ministries for my congregation.
*** Lesson Details *** Lessons are 1/2 hour to 1 hour a week and include music theory, piano technique, and performance songs. Please make sure the student has ready access to a keyboard or piano and has a scheduled 20-30 minute practice time every day. Learning to
play the piano well is a long-term commitment of several years.
I strive for a positive, friendly atmosphere, with praise for incremental progress and encouragement for areas of improvement. Students use the Alfred series and other supplements, graded to the student's age, ability and interests.
*** Studio Equipment *** Home- studio in a large living room with spacious seating for parents
*** Specialties *** I teach a well-rounded approach, combining technique, theory, and songs from various musical styles in a graded, graduated progression. Then I supplement with additional music according to the interests and advancing ability of the student to play the piano.
Sharon is an amazing teacher! Talented, kind, funny, and patient! I can't wait for my next lesson.
November 4, 2013
Helped me step up my playing
I had been teaching myself piano for many years when I reached a point where I was not improving and realized I needed a teacher. Sharon helped me work on my weaknesses as a musician and had a good eye for pieces that helped me build on my strengths. We always had fun working together, and she was always good about working around my busy schedule.
April 26, 2012
Sharon is doing a great job, she is well organized and knows what she's doing. I am pleased that she gives my daughter concrete feedbck and lessons to practice at home. The only problem is my daughter could use a little more practice time with her.
I bring more than thirty years of experience in teaching piano to students of every age and level. My lessons are tailored to each student's level and comprehension. I use a comprehensive approach to teaching piano incorporating technique development, learning of theory, piano performance and sight reading. In my lessons, I select and combine music from different music periods and styles. I also help students who want to obtain certificates from Associated Board of Royal School of Music (ABRSM) or Trinity College London (TCL) to excel in these examinations.
I have played piano since I was six years old, when my parents enrolled me in my first music classes. I continued my music education while going to elementary, middle, and high school. Ultimately, I graduated with a Master's Degree in Music from Butler University, located in Indianapolis, Indiana
Music has been one of my greatest passions since I was a little girl, and teaching it is my favorite way to share my love of music. I teach students of all ages and skill levels from early beginners to experienced piano players who want to bring their performance to a higher level.
I emphasize piano technique, musicianship, performance skills and music history. But I also use piano lessons to help my students develop life skills, such as concentration, focus, poise and discipline. I love to see my students to build confidence and self-este
When I began taking piano lessons with Ruth, I had some elementary experience playing instruments years ago. I am an older adult student and although I hesitated initially to start learning again, I am very happy that I did start taking piano with Ruth. She understands exactly my strong and weak points and suggests better ways for me to practice. She is patient, tactful and encouraging and helps me working on my technique. I've been enjoying my classes with Ruth immensely. And I've been enjoying listening to her playing as well. Any time, at the end of our class, I ask her to play a different piece for me, she does it beautifully. I can highly recommend Ruth for children and adults alike.
September 7, 2016
Ruth quickly tailored the lesson based on my experience level, and helped me so much in just 30 minutes! I look forward to our subsequent lessons.
July 1, 2016
I took 5 lessons with Ruth for 5 weeks., and it has been a great experience! Ruth is an engaging, encouraging, and friendly teacher. My goal was to learn the basics to play piano and she was really helpful for me to teach effectively in 5 classes.
Because it has been the greatest source of enjoyment, rejuvenation, and continued growth throughout my life, and I want to share that with everyone I can.
Why should you or your child take piano lessons with me?
Because I offer highly specialized lessons to each student, dependent on their needs and goals so that you too can benefit from a life filled with music. I offer lessons in many styles and supply all students with practical musical knowledge that will lead to full understanding and appreciation.
For young beginner students, students can expect to learn piano basics (note names, chords, etc.) and musical fundamentals, soon moving into learning full songs.
MUSIC LESSONS: Whether I am playing salsa, solo classical piano, in a jazz ensemble, or a concert band, I am ALWAYS having fun doing what I love, and I want you to have the same experience. After moving to Philadelphia ten years ago to study at Temple University, where I received my Bachelor of Music in Jazz Performance, I have had many great opportunities to play all types of music with all types of people. While my passions are in jazz music, composing, and arranging, my varied experience helps me pass on the fundamentals necessary to becoming a great musician while also adapting to your goals, needs, and musical preferences.
*** Lesson Details *** I aim for students to leave each lesson eager to practice and explore, and to come back with questions and stories of their progress. To that end, I work hard to tailor lessons to every
individuals interests and goals. Sometimes this means arranging, transcribing a recording, or even composing something new for my students. Additionally, in each lesson, I balance technical skills, ear training, and music theory to assure that each student walks away a complete musician, all structured around your musical goals.
*** Travel Equipment *** The student must provide their own instrument and assigned method books. I will provide a music stand if necessary, and other useful instructional tools (metronome, tuner, etc.)
*** Home Studio *** I offer lessons in my home located within walking distance of Broad Street in South Philadelphia, near the Tasker-Morris subway stop. I am equipped with a well-playing upright piano and plenty of space for musical activities. There is ample street parking in the area during the afternoon and early evening, and our living room is available to parents while students take their lesson. Students who travel to me for lessons gain all the benefits of performing on a piano, rather than an electric keyboard, and have access to many more resources that I am able to offer from my home, such as recordings and method books.
*** Specialties *** I specialize teaching "late starters" (teens and adults new to piano) fundamentals in music in a fun and exciting way that will have you playing the music you love quickly.
For brass instruments, I am able to help brand new beginners build up their sound and facility through simple exercises that will have them astounded by their progress.

- helping you catch-up, while also preparing you for what is ahead - balancing practice with conceptual knowledge and application - using research-based techniques to maximize your learning
I am a patient teacher, and well-equipped to explain tough topics in multiple ways. I like to use visuals and objects with simple examples to help my students really understand a concept before we try harder material. Total understanding and confidence is my goal for you.
My personal interests in mathematics are problem solving, puzzles, and combinatorics (think "How many different outfits can I make with all the clothes in my closet?"). If you're looking for an addicting puzzle to try, I suggest KenKen to all my students.

Richard (Rick) M.
Patient, competent and personable. Looking forward to my lessons.
November 16, 2018
We've only had one lesson with Allison so far. Working with a 4 year old is a special kind of challenge and we had an excellent first experience! I think her judgment of my daughter's skill level was very accurate and her first song choice was spot-on. My daughter needed something that would exercise her skills but be easy enough to restore her confidence and bring the fun back to her lessons. We look forward to continuing lessons with her.

Mr. Steve is an outstanding teacher whom I would recommend without reservation. He works at the pace of each of my childr
en and they are eager to work for him too. My son bores quickly, but Steve challenges him with encouragement and speed. My daughter is slower to catch on and he accommodates her speed with equal talent. He is creative in his teaching methods and also in his approach to advising more practice or encouraging practice methods. I hesitate to write this review because I don't want to share the gem we have found in Steve. He is kind, patient, encouraging, excited about the music and the kid's efforts, witty, professional and accommodating. 5 stars."
