It was my first lesson and now I have some idea how hold the violin and the bow. My homework is to practice a few notes on each string and then to practice playing the A scale. I think I can do it in two octaves. What is challenging is to play the scale without hearing a screeching sound. I'm looking forward to playing like Sarah Chang (hopefully after five lessons).

Hi, I perform professionally with Cascade Chamber Orchestra (classical) and Mango Nights (World Music and Jazz). I've been teaching all the strings for about 20 years. Royal Schools of Music and prepare them for one to two exams a year. The exams test playing abilities on 3 songs plus scales, arpeggios, ear training and music theory. Students that pass get a beautiful certificate for each level, grades 1 to 8.

I earned my music degree from Portland State University in 2006, graduating with honors. In 1996 I won two Medals of Distinction for violin performance and music theory and then in 2001 I received a Merit Award from the Associated Board of the Royal School of Music, London, England for viola performance. I've been blessed to be able to perform in a variety of ensembles and genres such as musical theater pit orchestras, string quartets, the Vancouver Symphony, and rock, jazz, tango, Middle Eastern and blue grass/folk bands.

My biggest thrill is to be able to transmit culture to the younger generation through music.

*** Lesson Details ***
I offer the following for my violin, viola, cello, bass and piano students. Most of all, it is the joy of music making that I want to share with my students.

Private and group lessons
Two recitals a year
Special performance opportunities throughout the year
Classical, jazz, fiddle, rock, tango, sacred, Celtic, folk
Music theory
Customized lesson plans using various methods old and new

I endeavor to provide a fun, non intimidating environment for students while motivating them to achieve their highest potential by providing many performance opportunities throughout the year. Some of my students have appeared as special guests with my band, Mango Nights.

Included with weekly private lessons are once a month group lessons where students can learn essential ensemble skills and have fun meeting other students.

Beginning students learn several simple songs that teach great tone and rhythm using classical, folk, blues, rock, ragtime, bluegrass. Students learn concepts such as syncopation, rhythm, note reading, articulations, dynamics, asymmetrical time meters and and more. Each book comes with a CD with piano accompaniment which makes practicing at home enjoyable.

Students are gradually introduced to scales, arpeggios, music theory, ear training and sight reading. All this works together to produce "the complete musician". The complete musician is a person who has excellent rhythm, pitch, note reading skills and creativity, a person who can enjoy and appreciate music in it's various forms over a lifetime whether it be for personal enjoyment or as a career.

For more serious students who have the goal of auditioning for university scholarships, top youth orchestras or becoming a professional musician, an accelerated intensive course is available in partnership with the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music. In this program, the student is prepared for a once a year rigorous exam requiring the playing of select pieces, scales and arpeggios, sight reading and ear training. The candidate performs for the visiting Associated Board Examiner from London England and is graded on a point system. Upon passing the student receives a beautiful certificate and additional awards for high scores. Once a year at a separate time, a written exam for music theory is taken. The exams are graded 1 to 8 and can be classical or jazz depending on the candidate's choice.

Emphasizing intonation and tone production while maintaining proper posture from day 1. I will help you build a foundation of skills on the violin to play whatever music you desire from Suzuki, to Country, to Rock. Or help apply what you know already to play a different kind of music.

About Jon
Out of all instruments, the sound of the violin is the closest to the human voice. Small wonder it is one of the oldest instruments still being played and it's tones can fit in to almost any style of music.

Learning the violin from me can include violin fundamentals such as bow use and finger placement, reading music notation, lead sheets, and playing by ear. All of these are skills that come into play at different times depending on what your goals are. A combination of these skills will give you a foundation of music knowledge that will serve you regardless of what style of music you want to play. Specific styles I've worked with are: Classical, Irish, Bluegrass, Rock and Symphonic Metal.

I tailor lessons to my students goals. I emphasize technique fundamentals, and help students apply the techniques they learn toward music t
hey enjoy playing, or composing.

In addition to playing violin, I write and arrange music. My song "The Burning Plain" won a national award for songwriting. If writing songs is your goal I can help you apply music theory concepts is ways that will make your songs stand out.

Jon is a great instructor that has been working with my 14 year old son Logan. He already has Logan working on vibrato which Logan has been terrified to try. Logan becomes more confident in himself with each lesson. He is also great at keeping me informed of Logan's progress.

I have also brought my younger son Liam to a lesson. Loam is autistic. Jon was very understanding and patient with liam and has told me if Liam is ever interested in playing he would give him lessons. All in all I am very happy with Jon as a teacher and would reccomend him.

I've been teaching violin for over ten years, and I've always found that a strengths-based, supportive stance is the strongest filter through which to receive the challenging material and feedback you'll be getting as you learn to play this difficult instrument. I will point out your strengths, so you can nuture them, and build on those strengths to a solid technique and explore them to find your unique musicality. I am your coach, and I am here to see you succeed!

About Kylie
I have been teaching music for over ten years, and my performing experience ranges from solo appearances with orchestras across the country to intimate chamber performances. I have studied under such renowned teachers as Anton Miller, Eugenia Choi, and Gregory Fulkerson, and my pedagogic education includes study under internationally renowned Suzuki educator Teri Einfeldt. I have held music directorships in ID and CT, and my students have won awards for their playing.

I am deeply interested in the ways in which experiencing and making art can act as a transformative power in an individual's life, and, by extension, in broader cultural contexts. I hold two degrees from the prestigious Hartt School of Music, and have experience teaching both children and adults.

I believe that students can only learn properly in the right atmosphere, with an enthusiastic, motivated instructor. If the experience is not fun the student will not excel in what they do. I believe the students should periodically have a chance to show what they are learning by performing in recitals with others.

About Jack
I started taking Violin and Piano lessons at age 7. By the age of 12 I was performing recitals and was Concert Master of my elementary school orchestra. In high school I was first chair, and learned to conduct the orchestra. I attended Southwest Missouri State College in Springfield Missouri. I created my own string quartet while studying there. I studied Violin under Mr. Harold King, who was a good friend of Jascha Heifetz and was his roommate in Chicago where they studied music together. I have studied Violin and Piano with many other instructors, including Tony Bennet and Peggy Lee's recording pianist. I studied modern and jazz piano with Paul Horn's Jazz Group. I was vocal coach for 3 years for the Pasadena, California Ambassador choir.I have taught for approx. 50 years privately and in various colleges and schools. I was a co-founder
and owner of Pasadena School of music in Pasadena California . I was an instructor for Beacock Music in Vancouver, Washington. I have been a member or the Clark College Orchestra and have performed in several concerts with them.I currently perform all over Oregon and Washington, and perform weekly for various functions in the area.

JACK IS TERRIFIC!

I wish we had found Jack years ago. We hired Jack specifically to help my daughter prepare for an audition. The audition was a success! Jack's approach to teaching is no nonsense and precise, but he has a warm and gentle way about him that motivated my daughter in a way that others haven't. Aside from his teaching ability, I was pleasantly surprised with Jack's sense of urgency and flexibility in responding to special scheduling needs. This is the first time I have been inspired to write an on-line testimony. I hope it helps other students discover Jack's tutoring.

Before switching to primarily playing viola, I trained and performed as a violinist for ten years and graduated from the Suzuki Violin Method. I now play violin as my secondary instrument.

My teaching style is inspired by my initial training in the Suzuki method, and my studies with violist and pedagogue Karen Ritscher at Oberlin Conservatory. Please note, I have not yet received training as a Suzuki teacher and use the Suzuki method books and the teaching I received as a Suzuki student as a jumping off point for working on each student's individual needs.

About Grace
I studied viola at Oberlin Conservatory of Music and moved to Portland three years ago to pursue performance and teaching opportunities. Since then I have performed with Classical Revolution PDX, Cascadia Composers and ARCO PDX and am a member of Macaulay Balkan.

My initial studies were on violin using the Suzuki method, which has greatly influenced my teaching approach. However, I am dedicated to customizing the lesson time and structure to the needs and priorities of my students.

*** Specialties ***
Very few "viola teachers" play viola as their primary instrument. As a full-time violist, I can help you learn how to play this idiosyncratic instrument from my own experience.

At the age of 58 I decided to start taking violin lessons for 2 reasons, enjoyment of playing music and exercise my brain. I found Lucy K on the takelessons.com website and she was able to accommodate my request for lessons in my home on a Sunday. Starting from scratch, she taught me the fundamentals of playing and I have made some progress over the last 8 months. She is patient with me yet will push me along and at time bring me out of my comfort zone, which is good. She has the ability and training to teach students from early age to older adults like me. In addition, she also teaches piano, which my wife started lessons with Lucy K at the same time I started violin. She has my recommendation if you have interest in either violin or piano.

I am a violinist, artist and singer/songwriter in Portland, Oregon who has been teaching violin for over 15 years. I believe that with enough practice, patience and dedication anyone can learn to play a new instrument. No previous experience is necessary-- just a passion for music!

NOTE: My availability is somewhat flexible so please contact me to set up a time that works!

Lessons will focus on:

-A solid basic foundation in classical music-- we can branch out from here!
-Learning to read music, use dynamics, bow, tune, scales, developmental exercises.
-Above all: having fun and pursuing a new passion.

Music is my life and has taken me all over the country and across the world and I want to share it's magic with as many people as I can!

About Naomi
Hello! I teach private violin lessons for beginners and intermediate students of all ages. I have been teaching violin for over 15 years. I love working with children of all ages and also specialize in working with adult beginning students. If you have always wanted to learn, now is the time! No previous experience is necessary-- just a passion for music!

NOTE: My availability is somewhat flexible. Please contact me to set up a time that works!

I am thorough and easy to work with. I use a combination of classical techniques and a hint of Suzuki method along with lots and lots of patience, creativity and encouragement.

About me: I am a classically trained violinist with over 20 years of experience and a diverse musical background. I've performed with the University Orchestra and the UT Opera Society at the University of Texas (wh
ere I went to school), several string quartets and many bands: folk, country, rock, experimental, pop and Mariachi to name a few. I periodically tour with bands nationally and internationally. I'm also a singer/songwriter. Additionally, I taught violin in the Mariachi program at Linder Elementary school for grades 2nd-5th for 3 years.

Equipment: I provide a stand and metronome at lessons and students just need to bring their violin and any books and accessories I assign for purchase.

For beginners, I generally start off with the Essential Elements book and/or Suzuki Method and then branch out from there. After the basics are established, students are welcome to bring their own music and ideas to the table as we continue to build a classical foundation. For middle/high school students who need extra help with their school orchestra, solo or UIL music we can make room for that too.

For those who live outside of Portland, I also offer video chat lessons via Skype/Google Hangouts/Facetime, which I've had a great success rate with and is really easy and convenient to use. In town students can also set up occasional video chat lessons anytime they feel like scheduling one (ig rainy days, limited transportation etc.)

I have been studying violin for over 15 years and will shortly begin graduate studies in music performance. In May 2016, I graduated from Duke University with degrees in global health, sociology, and ethics (I also earned distinction in music). I was a two-time winner of the Duke Symphony concerto competition, and I also served as the orchestra's concertmaster and president. Furthermore, I have been an official course instructor, a teaching assistant, and a writing tutor during college.

About Jenny
With a strong passion for music performance, I have been diligently studying the violin for over 15 years and have won multiple competitions and awards. I am excited to begin my graduate studies in violin performance this August at Temple University's Boyer College of Music and Dance, as the recipient of a generous Dean's Performance Grant. In the meantime, I will be attending several intensive summer festivals, including the Luby Violin Symposium, the National Orchestral Institute, and the Emerging Artist Fellowship Program at Garth Newel.

I completed my undergraduate work at Duke University in May 2016, earning degrees in global health, sociology, and ethics. Although I did not major in music at Duke, I was fortunate to have been quite involved in the music department. I studied violin with Mr. Eric Pritchard of the Ciompi Quartet fo
r four years, and I was a two-time winner of the Duke Symphony concerto competition. I also served as concertmaster and president of the Duke Symphony Orchestra, directed by Professor Harry Davidson. Upon graduating from Duke, I was awarded the Julia Wilkinson Mueller Prize for Excellence in Music, a Benenson Award in the Arts, and graduation with distinction in music. Last year, as a graduating college senior, I was honored to perform a solo for Duke University's board of trustees, including president Richard Brodhead and Apple CEO Tim Cook. Other than music, I am also extremely passionate about global health, social justice, filmmaking, writing, and education.
