Private Piano Teacher

I have been playing piano since the age of six. Originally classically trained, I made a change to learning Jazz after hearing it on the radio one night while still in high school.

I began my teaching career in 2007, providing private piano instruction to beginners at a small, privately owned music school in Laurel, Maryland.

After the school closed it's doors in the Fall of 2011, I continued working with many of the students privately. It is these efforts I continue to this day.

Having the opportunity to work 1 on 1 with students and see their progression and development on a week to week basis is a truly, rewarding experience that I feel fortunate to be a part of.

Ian is a wonderful piano instructor. My 6 year old has been with Ian for some time now and I must say his patience is exceptional. He teaches in ways that my son can easily remember and makes the lesson fun. My son always looks forward to his piano lessons and he has learnt a lot in 2 months. I have had some experience with piano instructors but Ian is exceptional. I highly recommend him as an instructor to other children

In my lessons I take more of a psychological approach to things, and so my methods work for just about any age group. My lessons aren’t focused on the boring stuff, like books. They’re focused on getting your foot in the door of playing as quickly and effective as possible. I was self thought, I’ve been through it, and so I know what you need to know to get that foot in. I’ve taken everything I’ve learnt and stripped it down to what I actually needed to know to get to that place; you’re basically learning from my mistakes. So you’re getting what would usually take at least five (5) years to learn, in under a year. So come on, start playing songs in no time.

I'm a fun person who loves different genres of music. I'm laid back but I try to keep things interesting so that lessons don't feel like a chore. I sometimes teach current songs from the radio to explain theory.

About Alex

I'm a multi-instrumentalist who is excited about music and would love to teach what I have acquired about piano. I've started my journey at the age of 5 with formal lessons. I took these lessons all throughout grade school and high school. In my middle school years through high school, I played

Alex definitely knows his stuff. He is a musical genius. He is engaging and makes our lessons fun by incorporating multiple genres to teach theory. I stumbled upon Alex's profile when I was searching for a teacher that would expand my understanding of jazz concepts, blues, gospel and improvisation scales. If you are looking for a down to earth instructor that is knowledgable and patient, then Alex is the person for you.
We had several glitches and technical issues, which is why the review reflects 4 stars.
We had a few technical difficulties but Alex was committed to making it work. My sons choose “Old Time Road”song and were thrilled to make progress on the first lesson. They were excited to book more lessons.

Four stars goes to Alex. He was very patient and knowledgeable.
Two stars goes to the actual app because there was multiple times throughout the lesson we lost connection or where I couldn’t see the lesson.

Experienced piano teacher of 7 years! My lesson plan is simple : 1. we warm up with basic scales + finger exercises, 2. we focus on tone + proper technique, and 3. we play a variety of solo pieces, duets, and ensemble music (I prepare backing tracks to help w/ rhythm and timing... or play the parts myself).

The time devoted to each portion of the lesson is totally adjustable. You will learn what you want to learn at your own pace.

About Ryan

Experienced cello, drum, piano, and guitar player of 20 years. Has a MFA degree in music composition + a BFA in music performance. Recorded professionally for tv shows such as "Glee," "Entertainment Tonight," and "Extra." Also records for "Sonoton Recordings." Currently resides in Los Angeles, Cali

I could not ask for more in a teacher. Ryan is amazing in every way. He has been teaching my 4 year old son the drums for nearly a year. When my son started lessons, he was actually below the minimum age for students, but he shared a passion for music that Ryan was willing to cultivate and be patient with.

Ryan is versatile in his teaching methods, creative, open, patient. Teaching a young student, Ryan adjusted to teaching music reading fundamentals with colors and shapes. He also figured out ways to correct, critique and build all the while building a young child's confidence.

Ryan provides a written evaluation of our son annually and has him prepare for two public recitals a year. Ryan integrates modern technology into the lessons to quickly provide feedback and create customized beats and tempos to practice to.

Above all, Ryan smiles and laughs. He makes every lesson pleasant and we treasure him, truly.
