I also teach beginning piano for children and adults. If you are looking to advance your musicality while studying voice, or to introduce your child to both beginning piano and voice, I highly recommend this approach. I customize lessons to accommodate the age and ability of the student, and teach the basics of piano technique, reading music and other aspects of beginning music theory.

About Wendy
I am a professional singer, songwriter and actor working in the Chicago area for many years. I have a B.F.A. in Theater/Voice from The University of Kansas and an M.A. in Interdisciplinary Arts from Columbia College Chicago. I've been teaching private vocal instruction since 2003: I host the Singer's Salon in Chicago, a unique and supportive venue for singer's to become more comfortable performing before an audience. I also instruct workshops for vocal technique and performance. For 10 years I was the lead singer for The Red Apples, an acoustic/electric roots band that performed an eclectic mix of rock, swing, blues, country and jazz. Within the past year I have re-energized my theater and cabaret career, appearing at Davenport's Cabaret, in a new solo show, as well as productions at Big Noise Theater and Stage 773. I've also completed tw
o short films and started working on my own web series, about my life as a singer/voice teacher. I also have an art song project consisting of original material with composer Jaroslaw Golembiowski. As a singer and actress I have performed with many major theaters in the Chicago area, including Court Theater, Victory Gardens, National Jewish Theater, Bailiwick Theater, and Prop Theater.

*** Lesson Details ***
As a classically trained singer I will instruct you in all aspects of singing technique, from breath control and support to improving your tone, range, flexibility and resonance. I have recently completed training in Somatic Voicework, The LoVetri Method, which has enriched my understanding of the mechanics and health of the voice, as well as applications of technique to CCM or contemporary musical styles of singing.
My familiarity with a variety of musical styles from pop/rock, R&B, and country, to musical theater, lounge and jazz makes me an ideal teacher for those interested in contemporary styles.

I have spent many years developing my own style of singing and instruction. I draw on my experiences and training not only in music, but theater and movement, (Linklater, Alexander Technique, Grotowski) to create a well rounded approach to singing and performing. As an instructor, I am most interested in helping students find their true voice and artistic style. I teach students to find expression through and with a foundation of technique, rather then in spite of it. I also am very interested in helping students deal with the mental/emotional aspects of performance, an all important area so frequently ignored by music teachers. My style is nurturing, yet disciplined, and sprinkled liberally with good-natured humor."

*** Studio Equipment ***
My studio space is fully equipped with a piano, P.A. system with microphones, CD, MP3 player for tracks, and ability to record lessons if the student desires.

*** Travel Equipment ***
Please have a piano (in tune!) or keyboard for use in your in home lessons.

*** Specialties ***
I am classically trained, but I am very adept at teaching music in a wide variety of styles, including most contemporary styles of music including pop/rock, roots, swing, jazz and blues, country, r&b, and of course musical theater and cabaret. My band performs an eclectic mix of originals and covers in the roots rock genre, and I write music as well. I have many years of experience in the theater as an actress, and I coach acting technique and performance. I coach singer/songwriters, and all types of singers, of all ages. I have a workshop that specializes in helping people learn to perform better in front of an audience, and I host the Singer's Salon in Chicago, which is a supportive opportunity to perform regularly! I also coach bands, to improve their vocals, harmonies, etc.

I have been teaching piano for many years. As a child I never had any formal piano lessons until a teacher at camp taught me how to harmonize chords; in high school and college I learned all the theory required. While musicality is certainly a gift, I wish I'd had the encouragement of a teacher earlier, and now I really enjoy watching students progress as they master the instrument and at the same time develop a firm grasp of theory and reading music.

About Lon
I am a certified teacher who has taught, along with high school English and college English and ESL, instrumental ensemble and music appreciation classes in schools and years of individual lessons in piano, flute and saxophone. I also taught piano in Beni-Mellal, Morocco while with the Peace Corps. As a second job I played Clavinola regularly for my church for eight years, as well as accompanying the choir and performing at weddings. I also accompanied concerts and played for graduation ceremonies at the high school where I taught, and have played with professional musicians onstage. Music has been one of the great joys in my life and my purpose in teaching is to convey to the student what a joy it is. I am particularly happy to teach a number of young students here in Chicago.

*** Lesson Details ***
Levels:  Piano and flute,
beginner to intermediate. Saxophone, beginner.
In-Home Lessons: Yes
In-Studio Lessons: Yes
Ages:  6 and up
Subjects Taught: Piano, flute, saxophone, music theory
Lesson Details: Lessons in all instruments are focused not on exercises such as scales and arpeggios, but on what musicians want to be able to do: the correct and pleasurable playing of pieces of music. In this, I am not a "page turner," i.e. simply letting the student play a piece several times and then moving on. Each student has his or her own pace and I will always go with that pace; but I encourage students to achieve all they can and rejoice with them at their achievements. No piece is passed until it is mastered, but if younger students become frustrated, we leave it for a while and come back when at a higher level. There are "nuts and bolts" techniques to be learned in order to progress, but while these are being mastered the student will grow to feel more natural and accomplished as his or her ability builds.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I have my own digital piano at home if the student wishes to travel.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can bring my own flute, but not a keyboard. I would expect the student (or parent) to buy the book, but would also have my own copy.

*** Specialties ***
I enjoy all types and periods of music, especially piano from elementary theory to rock/jazz improvisation techniques.

Lon is extremely talented, patient and thorough. He can teach absolute beginners (such as I) very well, and makes you practice till you're confident with the notes. In the meantime, he encourages you even when you think you're getting nowhere with a new, baffling instrument. He is flexible and accommodates schedule changes as needed.

A custom tailored Lesson plan based on the students needs and wants. A definite focus on theory.

About Josh
Hi, there! My name is Josh, and I can't wait to meet you! I am fairly new to private teaching and am looking forward to helping my students get a good solid start with either piano, or improvised theatre. I studied theatre in Philadelphia at the University of the Arts, and I trained at the IO theatre in Chicago for improvised theatre. I studied jazz piano with Dr. Joe Utterback in Stratford, CT. I've been performing in Chicago as an improvisor and mucisian for about 4 years. I'm a relaxed and friendly person and my teaching style is very much based on what you want to accomplish, though I'd be happy to make suggestions. I really look forward to helping you reach your goals!

First time playing piano? Resuming after years (decades?) of not playing the piano? No matter your age or experience, you can always learn and improve!

Pop songs, jazz ballads, classical pieces, or movie/game themes, there must be something you are interested in playing and get better!

About Bill
I have always been a self-studier in my entire life. Being able to learn with just books and your brain is a crucial skill to have! However, I know not everyone (and sometimes even myself) have the discipline and motivation to keep going during hard times. This is where a tutor would come in handy.

I enjoy tutoring (doing it ever since I was in high school for my classmates) and helping other overcome problems that I have encountered myself because it enhances my own understanding and makes me happy that my self-studying is helping others. Sometimes, my students even bring up alternative ways of thinking that I have never thought of before!

Hey there – I am so glad that you want to study piano! A little bit about me: I am a graduate of the world-renowned jazz program at the Jacobs School of Music and have been teaching for 8 years. I have experience with many styles and genres and have been fortunate to play with artists from over 20 countries. My work has been featured in NPR’s Jazz Critic’s Poll, Jazziz Magazine, and All About Jazz, and I was recently chosen to be a cultural ambassador for the U.S. State Department’s global music fellowship (OneBeat). A little bit about my piano methods: For beginner piano students, I start with exploring the "anatomy" of the keyboard so we can delve right away into learning simple arrangements of your favorite songs. Pick any song you like, and I'll work with you to learn it by ear! Over time, I will teach you more technical exercises, scales, and ways to start reading music. I can also be an ally for intermediate students who wish to delve into learning harder pieces by ear or by ...

About Hannah
I hold a degree in Jazz Studies from the Jacobs School of Music, where I focused especially on Afro-Cuban music, thanks to the tutelage of Latin Jazz giants Michael Spiro and Wayne Wallace! My jazz background also gave me rigorous training in music theory and history.

My performance career is highly diverse! You like folk? I’ve played with Chicago’s beloved Al Scorch and Della Mae’s guitar star, Courtney Hartman. You like hip-hop? I play and record with artists at Classick Studios, where Chance The Rapper, SZA, and No Name make albums. Indie rock? Part of what got me into bass was underground/DIY scenes—I love playing a good basement show! How about jazz? I’ve done everything from standards gigs at hotels to composing for experimental groups like The Liberation Music Collective.

I’ve also had the pleasure to play with musicians from ov
er 20 countries. One of the most rewarding experiences of my life was being a Fellow for OneBeat, a program run through the U.S. State Department that brings together international musicians to compose, record, and tour together. I have learned so much about the power of music through my relationships with artists from all corners of the globe.

I believe in “Occam’s Razor” bass playing – finding a simple, elegant solution to the “problem” at hand, whether that “problem” is finding a good fingering for a fast-moving melody, finding a tasteful yet interesting bassline for a funk groove, or improving your right-hand speed so you can finally play that one Tool song you’ve always loved. The “Occam’s Razor” approach builds your instincts and helps you become a solid, expressive bassist that everyone wants to play with!

No matter where you are in your musical development, I can be your ally. I have experience teaching all ages and experience levels and can help you go deeper in whatever music lights you up. I can offer advice about musicianship too – how to start a band, how to rock an audition for your school’s jazz ensemble, or how to make the most of a recording session.

Bass is a physically demanding instrument, and over my career I have recovered from multiple injuries. I am committed to helping you develop healthy technique that prevents and manages injuries and adapts to your physical conditions. I try to offer compassion AND solutions to students who struggle physically with their instrument or face health challenges. I’ve been there too, and I’m here to help.

Greetings! I have 16 years of teaching experience as a faculty member of the fabled Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago. I offer lessons in piano, voice, theory, songwriting, and transcription with a specialty in helping artists learn to accompany themselves on an instrument while singing. I am willing to work with anyone on just about anything! Lessons are tailored to fit. Note reading (or an interest in reading) is a plus but not required; traditional notation as well as standard "lead sheet" notation with chord symbols, as desired. I provide a collaborative experience in a safe, friendly, encouraging atmosphere for ages 6 and beyond. Whether you are advanced or a total beginner, every song has a lesson inside.

About Lexie
I stumbled into teaching by accident sixteen years ago and never left! That's the truth. In 1993, I moved to Chicago to pursue a Jazz Studies degree at DePaul, became a student of the late great vocal guru Ed Farran, and began my journey as a working musician. Several jobbing gigs and a handful of TV jingles later, I decided to form a band of my own to showcase the fruits of my passion for songwriting. I was asked to be a temporary substitute teacher at the Old Town School of Folk Music in 2003, never imagining how transformative my experience there would be, and ended up staying on as a voice & piano faculty member for sixteen years and counting.

It turns out teaching is fulfilling, fun, and infectious.  My style in the classroom is informed largely by the exceptional teachers I've been fortunate enough to work with over the years, but
I believe I have learned the most about music from time spent with my students. Maintaining a collaborative and nurturing enviroment in our lessons is important to me for that reason.

Piano students of all ages can expect a well-rounded approach to learning their instrument in a way that is tailored to the student's personality and learning style. Sometimes we will follow a book, but often we won’t. There will be theory and technique elements to each lesson designed to enhance the student’s understanding of what they’re playing, but the focus will be on the joy of execution. A student’s willingness to learn to read music is immensely helpful but not an absolute requirement.

Voice students will practice a wide range of topics from the physical (healthy singing techniques) to the psychological (vocal inhibition issues) to the artistic (style; finding your own voice). Singers who are interested in taking their skill set a step further can learn how to get around a keyboard, understand key signatures, and write their own transcriptions.

My musical compass is always pointing lessons toward this idea: What can I do to help my students feel empowered and equipped to make music confidently when they go off to college/when they’re 45-years old/ when they’re retired? For more advanced or ambitious students the query goes further: How can I challenge and inspire my students to get the most out of their instrument and their relationship to music in general? My main goal in every lesson is to point the student toward a life-long love of self-propelled music appreciation.

I have been teaching children for 32 years, as an elementary school teacher and for the past 2 years as a personal tutor. While working as a tutor a number of parents asked me, "Do you teach piano too?" and while certainly I had worked with music as part of the curriculum, subbing for music teachers frequently, I hadn't taught piano since maternity leave, when I taught six students in my home. I have been really encouraged by how well and quickly my present students have learned and by how they respond to the solid background in theory I had, as a music student myself for many years, in Europe. Frequently parents told me the students were seeking a different approach from their previous teacher and in all cases the students have done well. Occasionally I found their previous teachers had them on books that were too advanced, that the students were not even reading the music and didn't know what or where the notes were. I prescribed a new book and worked carefully with them so ...

About Emily
Dear Student,
I am looking forward to meeting you and beginning piano lessons with you, whether you are a beginner, or have already been playing for a couple of years. I hope very much that you will find a lot of joy in playing as, week by week, you progress.
Music is a beautiful, bright and hopeful thing. As your playing improves you will gain confidence. You will also gain a very solid background in theory, keys, scales, major and minor, arpeggios, chord progressions. Perhaps alongside the piano you will learn or are learning another instrument, or you will join the school choir or the school band. There is just so much out there. I want your skills in piano to improve, but I also want you to take part in the world of music that is out there and for it to stay with you your whole life.
Living in Chicago you will have much opportu
nity to experience this world. So let's begin this Fall.
Your teacher,
Ms Emily.
