**I only teach jazz theory and composition on piano! I do not teach basic piano lessons. Piano is my second instrument, so if you're looking to learn piano technique I recommend finding a piano teacher!

About Sean
When I was 12 or 13 I heard John Coltrane's masterpiece album 'Giant Steps' for the first time. From then on I was absolutely magnetized to the saxophone and devoted my life to studying the great art form of jazz. I have come to believe that the only thing better than playing music is sharing music with others!
Hailing from Flagstaff, Arizona, I attended Western Michigan University on a four year scholarship and received my Bachelor of Music, Jazz Studies in 2009. I had the privilege of studying with the great Trent Kynaston, as well as performing with some of the most influential jazz musicians today, including Bobby McFerrin, Stefon Harris, Billy Hart, Fred Hersch, and Randy Brecker. I now live in Chicago where I teach lessons and perform regularly with my band, The Winchester Sound.
I teach jazz saxophone, classical saxophone, music
theory, jazz/pop theory, music performance, arranging and composition.

I believe everyone gets into music for a different reason, and therefore each student deserves their own custom curriculum. It is important for students to work at a pace and in a direction that is comfortable for them. For this reason, we will start with a consultation so I can figure out exactly what you aim to get out of taking lessons. From there we will incorporate some standard curriculum and method books that I enjoy using, as well as my own techniques that involve plenty of ear training and exercises to improve one's facility on the instrument (scales, patterns, technique).
Most importantly, we're going to have a lot of fun! If you are not having fun it's not even worth your time. I am very laid back and promote a stress-free environment!
Remember, I was once a beginner, too. I know what it's like to learn something new, so I want to be there to guide you through it!

*** Studio Equipment ***
extra music room f/w keyboard w/ seating for parents

*** Travel Equipment ***
I provide no equipment. Student must provide saxophone, reeds, books, etc.

*** Specialties ***
My passion is jazz. Not just jazz saxophone, but the art form in general. I love to teach people the theory behind improvisation and watch them as they explore and internalize the endless possibilities thereafter.
I am also classically trained and am equally proficient in that area, although I would say I do prefer jazz.
In summary, my specialties would be: jazz saxophone, jazz theory, improvisation, jazz arranging, saxophone performance, composing.

I have been teaching piano for many years. As a child I never had any formal piano lessons until a teacher at camp taught me how to harmonize chords; in high school and college I learned all the theory required. While musicality is certainly a gift, I wish I'd had the encouragement of a teacher earlier, and now I really enjoy watching students progress as they master the instrument and at the same time develop a firm grasp of theory and reading music.

About Lon
I am a certified teacher who has taught, along with high school English and college English and ESL, instrumental ensemble and music appreciation classes in schools and years of individual lessons in piano, flute and saxophone. I also taught piano in Beni-Mellal, Morocco while with the Peace Corps. As a second job I played Clavinola regularly for my church for eight years, as well as accompanying the choir and performing at weddings. I also accompanied concerts and played for graduation ceremonies at the high school where I taught, and have played with professional musicians onstage. Music has been one of the great joys in my life and my purpose in teaching is to convey to the student what a joy it is. I am particularly happy to teach a number of young students here in Chicago.

*** Lesson Details ***
Levels:  Piano and flute,
beginner to intermediate. Saxophone, beginner.
In-Home Lessons: Yes
In-Studio Lessons: Yes
Ages:  6 and up
Subjects Taught: Piano, flute, saxophone, music theory
Lesson Details: Lessons in all instruments are focused not on exercises such as scales and arpeggios, but on what musicians want to be able to do: the correct and pleasurable playing of pieces of music. In this, I am not a "page turner," i.e. simply letting the student play a piece several times and then moving on. Each student has his or her own pace and I will always go with that pace; but I encourage students to achieve all they can and rejoice with them at their achievements. No piece is passed until it is mastered, but if younger students become frustrated, we leave it for a while and come back when at a higher level. There are "nuts and bolts" techniques to be learned in order to progress, but while these are being mastered the student will grow to feel more natural and accomplished as his or her ability builds.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I have my own digital piano at home if the student wishes to travel.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can bring my own flute, but not a keyboard. I would expect the student (or parent) to buy the book, but would also have my own copy.

*** Specialties ***
I enjoy all types and periods of music, especially piano from elementary theory to rock/jazz improvisation techniques.

Lon is extremely talented, patient and thorough. He can teach absolute beginners (such as I) very well, and makes you practice till you're confident with the notes. In the meantime, he encourages you even when you think you're getting nowhere with a new, baffling instrument. He is flexible and accommodates schedule changes as needed.

My lessons start with warming up with scales, chords, and drills. This will improve accuracy and knowledge of the piano. We then go forward to reading music from either sheet music or a book of choice. Since the lesson is geared specifically for you, we could work on classical pieces, pop songs, originals and everything else in between.

About Sebastian
Playing and learning an instrument is beneficial to ones being because it is a great way to express ones self and it's an excellent stress reliever. It's also an amazing feeling playing an instrument you love to listen to.

Learning any instrument could be daunting at first because there is so much to learn and without any help, could feel overwhelming and hopeless. Do not fret because I am here to assist you!
I have studied many music genres all across the board and have a professional knowledge and comprehension of the theory encompassed behind them. Every lesson is crafted for each student in specific areas they have interest in while being done at the students own pace.

My background history:

I immersed myself in music at a very young age, studying classical piano and theory. In my teenage years I took the initiative to le
arn guitar and began by purchasing my own guitar and books and taught myself to play electrical and classical guitar. I followed my passion and continued my studies at Columbia College and graduated with a bachelors degree in Instrumental Performance.

Post-graduation, I have experienced playing in multiple bands, performing in concerts, teaching piano and guitar ranging in all levels at a music center and private home and enjoying some traveling.

Everything I have learned will be reflected in my lesson methodology and will help you learn to play proficiently in a timely manner. I look forward to meeting new prospective students while having fun teaching them music.

It's NEVER too late to start learning piano.

I focus on the fundamentals (technique, sightreading, playing by ear) to prepare all my students to tackle any pieces they want, whether it's classical, pop, jazz, ragtime.

About Eric
I enjoy sharing my love of music by helping others embark on their musical journeys. I am a strong supporter of using a combination of aural training and sightreading to boost musicality and finesse.

In the past 6 years, I have taught students of all ages, ranging from children to seniors. You are never ever too old to learn the piano. You may not be the next Chopin, but with practice and dedication, you will eventually be able to play the mass majority of piano repertoire.

Strong fundamentals (scales/chords/arpeggios) are important, but I also remember to make music fun and not boring by providing diverse selections of supplemental (pop/ragtime/blues) pieces.

Ms. Kristiana brings our family the joy of playing and practicing piano. Both my 5 year old daughter and I are her students. Ms. Kristiana knows how to motivate young piano players as well as accommodate and respect and help adult players trying to pick up piano again. As for kids, she is extremely patient, kind, open minded and fun. She made my daughter feel comfortable from the trial lesson and their teacher-student dynamic improves with each lesson.

Starting piano lessons as an elementary school student, I studied for 13 years. Since then, my piano skills have gotten rusty, but Ms. Kristiana has helped me start back up again. She came up with a plan with a practice book and a piece book that I can enjoy, and she also helped me learn the piece I had been longing to learn. Maybe that piece is above my level at this point, but she patiently guided me to go through it and now I am half way to mastering it.

We are glad to have met her and to be under her guidance.

Playing the piano is something I have enjoyed since I was in the third grade. I loved music so much, I picked up the flute, as well, a few years later and joined my high school band. Since 1996, I have enjoyed teaching children who have a passion to learn as I did. With a degree in elementary education, I have experience both as an elementary school teacher as well as a music teacher of piano and flute. I studied the piano under seven different piano instructors and the flute under 3 instructors. As both an academic teacher and music teacher, I have watched how children who are trained in music flourish and excel in their academics, their creative skills, time management, discipline/character, their ability to concentrate, development of hand-muscle/hand-eye coordination, self-esteem, and ability to relax and cope with stress. I am constantly observing this in my own children's lives as they take piano lessons, and it has been so rewarding!!! I am looking forward to the opportunity to

About Dana
I have been playing the piano for 31 years and the flute for 29....these are still some of my favorite hobbies. As early as elementary school, I was privileged to participate in numerous masterclasses, recitals, and state and national competitions. In high school and college, I began accompanying for choirs, instrumentalists, and vocalists. In addition to teaching lessons and playing for my own relaxation and pleasure, I have thoroughly enjoyed using my skills in my local church for the past 15 years as a church and choir accompanist, as well as organizing and participating in flute ensembles. No matter what style you prefer to develop, it is always important to begin with a strong foundation in music theory and proper technique, which is where I begin every student. What is the perfect age to begin piano lessons? Many piano instructors I
have talked to have concluded 3rd grade is the sweet spot for most kids. My experience over the years has definitely confirmed this. Before that age, kids seem to progress very slowly. However, there are some kids out there who are advanced in their development and may be able to begin earlier. My preferred piano curriculum are the Bastien Piano Series and Faber Piano Adventures. From there, we will explore all kinds of other fun stuff!

I have been teaching children for 32 years, as an elementary school teacher and for the past 2 years as a personal tutor. While working as a tutor a number of parents asked me, "Do you teach piano too?" and while certainly I had worked with music as part of the curriculum, subbing for music teachers frequently, I hadn't taught piano since maternity leave, when I taught six students in my home. I have been really encouraged by how well and quickly my present students have learned and by how they respond to the solid background in theory I had, as a music student myself for many years, in Europe. Frequently parents told me the students were seeking a different approach from their previous teacher and in all cases the students have done well. Occasionally I found their previous teachers had them on books that were too advanced, that the students were not even reading the music and didn't know what or where the notes were. I prescribed a new book and worked carefully with them so ...

About Emily
Dear Student,
I am looking forward to meeting you and beginning piano lessons with you, whether you are a beginner, or have already been playing for a couple of years. I hope very much that you will find a lot of joy in playing as, week by week, you progress.
Music is a beautiful, bright and hopeful thing. As your playing improves you will gain confidence. You will also gain a very solid background in theory, keys, scales, major and minor, arpeggios, chord progressions. Perhaps alongside the piano you will learn or are learning another instrument, or you will join the school choir or the school band. There is just so much out there. I want your skills in piano to improve, but I also want you to take part in the world of music that is out there and for it to stay with you your whole life.
Living in Chicago you will have much opportu
nity to experience this world. So let's begin this Fall.
Your teacher,
Ms Emily.

Piano may be one of the toughest instruments to learn, because of all the multitasking required! You have to be able to read two different musical lines simultaneously, and keep track of what both your left and right hands are doing, all while your foot works the pedals. While most schools have classes to teach students band instruments or stringed instruments, few schools offer piano instruction. This means that most piano students learn how to play at home and in private piano lessons, instead
