I have been teaching piano for many years. As a child I never had any formal piano lessons until a teacher at camp taught me how to harmonize chords; in high school and college I learned all the theory required. While musicality is certainly a gift, I wish I'd had the encouragement of a teacher earlier, and now I really enjoy watching students progress as they master the instrument and at the same time develop a firm grasp of theory and reading music.

I am a certified teacher who has taught, along with high school English and college English and ESL, instrumental ensemble and music appreciation classes in schools and years of individual lessons in piano, flute and saxophone. I also taught piano in Beni-Mellal, Morocco while with the Peace Corps. As a second job I played Clavinola regularly for my church for eight years, as well as accompanying the choir and performing at weddings. I also accompanied concerts and played for graduation ceremonies at the high school where I taught, and have played with professional musicians onstage. Music has been one of the great joys in my life and my purpose in teaching is to convey to the student what a joy it is. I am particularly happy to teach a number of young students here in Chicago.

Lesson Details: Lessons in all instruments are focused not on exercises such as scales and arpeggios, but on what musicians want to be able to do: the correct and pleasurable playing of pieces of music. In this, I am not a "page turner," i.e. simply letting the student play a piece several times and then moving on. Each student has his or her own pace and I will always go with that pace; but I encourage students to achieve all they can and rejoice with them at their achievements. No piece is passed until it is mastered, but if younger students become frustrated, we leave it for a while and come back when at a higher level. There are "nuts and bolts" techniques to be learned in order to progress, but while these are being mastered the student will grow to feel more natural and accomplished as his or her ability builds.

I have my own digital piano at home if the student wishes to travel.

I can bring my own flute, but not a keyboard. I would expect the student (or parent) to buy the book, but would also have my own copy.

Lon is extremely talented, patient and thorough. He can teach absolute beginners (such as I) very well, and makes you practice till you're confident with the notes. In the meantime, he encourages you even when you think you're getting nowhere with a new, baffling instrument. He is flexible and accommodates schedule changes as needed.

Dr. Lon West is excellent with special needs students. Our student was undergoing therapy for her hands. Because of illness her hands were claw like with little use and little movement when she started piano. After a few months with Dr. West her therapist is thrilled as her hands are completely normal.Piano lessons helped very much.

I am a professional singer, songwriter and actor working in the Chicago area for many years. I have a B.F.A. in Theater/Voice from The University of Kansas and an M.A. in Interdisciplinary Arts from Columbia College Chicago. As a classically trained singer I will instruct you in all aspects of singing technique, from breath control and support to improving your tone, range, flexibility and resonance. About Daniel
Daniel, a former faculty member of Columbia College in Chicago, is a studio and live performance singer and musician based in Chicago. His teaching and performing experience spans three decades, and includes expertise in the studies of voice, guitar, piano, bass, drums, and trumpet, along with music theory, arranging, and composing. He is a Lincoln Academy Student Laureate who holds a BA in Music Composition, and has attended graduate courses in education at Roosevelt University and DePaul University in Chicago. He has taught students of all ages at private studios, public school, and college.

Daniel is described by his students as a natural teacher. He prefers to be regarded as an advancing student, and takes the journey along with his students to guide them towards their goals with a friendly, positive, efficient and productive appro
ach. He feels that music is within all of us, and a desire to learn is a sign of talent, so anyone can develop their musical abilities with methodical practice.

The musical journey for Daniel began at an early age with trumpet and piano studies which became a passion for him by the age of 14. He was the drum major of the high school marching band, and successfully completed a paid contract to arrange music for the high school jazz band which performed in a state beauty pageant. He began teaching privately after high school, and continued playing in bands, and composing original music. He formed a professional jazz ensemble under the name of the Chicago Jazz Players by the age of 22, and developed his arranging techniques while having it performed by an eighteen piece orchestra consisting of many great local artists. It was in this environment that he gained experience with brass, woodwinds, and rhythm instruments. He was granted a position at Columbia College as an instructor at age 29 where he taught theory, sight singing, musicianship, ear training, harmony, orchestration, and composition. He scored the music for several plays, and conducted his own pieces with Chicago Symphony and Lyric Opera Players. During those years he found himself playing the guitar and singing more than anything else. It was in 1995 that he focused on singing and playing the guitar with his rock band. He has produced several CD recordings of his original music in his own studio, and has helped produce local bands and artists. He performs regularly in the Chicago area.

*** Lesson Details ***
Daniel exhibits patience and care with each student, and develops an individualized approach based on clear goals with practical procedures. Most beginners can expect to have a working knowledge of music notation and how it applies to their instrument within three months, and should be developing fluency in performing music that they enjoy within six months. Advancing students will enjoy the rewards that will follow by studying with an experienced teaching musician that will recognize strengths and weaknesses, and recommend proven techniques for personal musical development. Studying music should be fun, fulfilling, and in harmony with the needs and desires of the student, and this is key to the philosophy held by Daniel.

Knowledgeable about many areas of music (teaches many instruments). Very professional. Treats my child with respect and is good about focusing on the fundamentals of good playing so as not to develop bad habits which become harder to correct if not corrected early on. Gives my child suggestions and practice homework to improve techniques and proficiency.

Daniel is a natural teacher and inspires his students to share his love for music. He has a lot of experience and is patient with learners of all abilities. I have had 3 lessons with him so far and have thoroughly enjoyed my experience. I am new to singing but learned piano when I was younger so I am not entirely new to music. He has helped me expand my horizons and believe in what I can do with my voice. During class, we cover music theory as well as the actual singing part. Progress will go faster if you study the theory on your own (he provides you with all the materials you need to learn) and come prepared.

Piano lessons differ from Classical Piano lessons by being more about what the student wants to learn, instead of following a scholarly path toward becoming an accomplished pianist. Read my profile carefully before you sign up with me. There will still be technical exercises, but they might be tailored to the goal of playing a certain style. Any music lessons you want to take that aren't listed specifically can be called "Piano" lessons, if you have a piano and want to discuss other options.

I can teach a little bit to beginners about playing by ear and using lead sheets, but My Thing is the old fashioned, old lady piano teacher you probably imagine. There are reasons that the traditional methods became traditional. They work.

Students can take Piano lessons, IF they have regular access to a piano or minimally acceptable keyboard. Regular access can mean three or four times a week at a friend's house, or a church, or a library. If all you have is an unacceptable keyboard, sign ...

About Melodie
I am Melodie, a highly experienced private lesson teacher of voice, piano, and theory. Read my profile carefully before you sign up with me.

How should an adult begin private music lessons? First, decide why you want to spend the money, and what you expect to get for your money. Second, plan how you will manage practicing time and location. Music Theory would be maybe 45min 3 days a week, but singing or piano should be 30-60min 4 or 5 days a week. Third, find a teacher who is experienced and supporting enough to adjust goals to fit your aspirations and purposes without diluting the minimum standards of traditional artistic education. If you're lucky, you'll find one that keeps prices low and schedules flexible.

Armed with a Coe College Bachelor of Music and a Performance Certificate in Vocal Performance from 1981, I chose to work i
n Costa Rica 1982-1984 before calling Chicago home in 1986. My performances have usually been of scored acoustic vocal and choral soprano in mainly traditional formats. I teach private lessons in classical vocal technique from a body awareness perspective, how to sight-read keyboard scores, and music theory translated into something that makes sense.

Approaching vocal technique from a physical perspective allows us to discover the student's unique and true voice. Reading paper piano music at first sight means you can play it without knowing the song. Music theory is essential to understanding how and why the art works the way it does. Most students need help ditching the confusing silliness they've already been exposed to, and putting together the pieces of the numbers puzzle we call melody, harmony, and rhythm.

Why sing or play piano? Do you want improved balance, posture, relaxation, abdominal strength, confidence, cultural awareness, emotional expression, memory support, and stress relief? You'd be surprised how many people take lessons just to feel better. I can't guarantee you'll have the same results, but I promise you'll know if you want to pay me more money or not after about five lessons.

Label me Traditional, or Classical, or even Persnickety, but we all transcend labels. I can perform opera, simplify unifying concepts, teach folk singing, direct a church choir, suggest country repertoire, coach performance charisma, and even officiate a marriage ceremony as a Dudeist Priest. I also bake a mean pie.

Complete beginners are welcome in all areas. Advanced lessons are available for voice only. In my studio I teach adults only. Singing and voice lessons have minimum 45min duration. Prices for lessons at my studio are $30 for 30min, $41 for 45min, and $50 for 60min. Online lessons, available for singing and theory but not piano, are the same price. Schedule-As-You-Go lessons with no recurring schedule slot are an option, if you prefer that to taking a lesson the same time every single week.

My teaching studio is a residential office on a high second floor walk-up near the intersection of Chicago and Ashland. I might be able to travel within East Village / Ukrainian Village / Wicker Park / Noble Square for an additional $15 travel fee. If I travel to your location, we can negotiate younger ages and group fees.

What do you want to learn? As partners, the student and I build a plan, balancing current aspirations with proven methods. I work with the paper music and workbooks you already own, and TAILOR THE LESSONS TOWARD PRACTICAL VALUE. On the other hand, I believe I have an ethical responsibility to provide a minimum of classical instruction.

Upfront deal breakers:
• Communication outside of lesson time will be mainly internet and email. The email address in your profile must be a valid form of official business communication.
• Students may not bring pets, children, or guests to the lesson. A quietly observing adult guest is welcome with 48-hour notice.
• My students know if they use too much fragrance, whether it be laundry scent boosters or hair treatments, they may be refused entrance into my studio. It's a big deal.
• You pay for any lessons not canceled or rescheduled before the 24-hour deadline, whether you attend or not. Do not be near me when you are contagiously ill. Ask me to forgive late cancellations caused by true emergencies, but realize I don’t have to.
• If you are a singing student, you need a place where you can practice. Prior to your first cancellation deadline, you must read the "Your First Singing Lesson" section found on each Singing or Voice Subject Page.
• If you want to learn how to read keyboard scores or understand how to play keyboard by ear, sign up for Music Theory. If you don’t have regular access to something that can legally be called a piano, including weighted keys and a damper pedal, sign up for Music Theory. Repeat: if you can’t practice on a real piano, don’t take Piano lessons. Music Theory lessons will probably teach you what you want to learn, anyway.

So far I've only had one lesson with Melodie and she really cares to help you achieve what you're trying to accomplish. We went through a few things such as posture, how to breathe, humming, vowels, position of tongue and other things. About myself: I don't know how to sing and this is my first singing lesson.

My lessons with Melodie have been great! She is extremely knowledgeable. I'm a new piano player, and she has been very patient with me as we work our way through the basics. She is great at explaining the theory side in a way I can understand. And the out of class work she suggests not only drives home what we worked on in the lesson, but it also has me playing some basic songs...which is encouraging and keeps practice fun!

Typically lessons start with a warm-up or exercise, which usually relates to a concept in the songs or pieces we study in the lesson. Generally I try to work on three pieces each lesson that share a concept in some way. Lessons can vary based on student goals and approach. For example, an advanced classical lesson might target specific spots in larger pieces, while a jazz/pop lesson might deal with hand positioning for chords and ear training.

I reached out to Matt to prepare for a college audition I was preparing for.
What I enjoyed most about Matt was that he had the capability to be super flexible and encouraging. In my first lesson, I was very nervous and unsure of my song choices. He was confident and knowledgable with the capability to provide several great song choices with just a short warm-up with me and listening to my voice. He knew exactly what I needed to work on and by my third lesson, my friends and family were able to hear a difference.
I became more confident and came to lessons more sure of what I wanted and envisioned for my audition. Matt was flexible and not only gave me the freedom to add my own ideas to the music, but encouraged me to be original. He also gave me insight and tips on introduction, stance, and how to be more theatrical on stage.
Matt is very professional, knowledgable, and I will definately come back for more lessons with him. I highly recommend him.

I grew up with a piano always near me. There was a piano in my family's home, and because I was always involved with music in school, I was naturally always in the vicinity of a piano there as well. This lead me to teach myself a lot about the instrument, which was good because I ended up playing it a lot when I lived in Brazil. Then, as part of my bachelor's degree at Brigham Young University, I took a full year of secondary piano lessons, qualifying me to teach beginning piano. ***Important FYI*** Students MUST have access to their own piano/electronic keyboard. I teach with the Faber & Faber method books.

About Drew
Drew is a flute student in rigorous preparation for a future career in classical music. For 15 years, he has participated in numerous music competitions, festivals, and performance opportunities, both as a soloist and part of ensembles, and actively continues to do so. He is an advocate of the arts and passionate about spreading the gift of music, which has lead him to teach over 20 students (and counting!) in just the past 2 years.

Drew graduated with a BM in Flute Performance at Brigham Young University, and continues his studies at Northwestern University, where he is projected to earn his MM in Flute Performance in 2018.

***My Requirements***
Learning comes at a price, though. I hold my students to high expectations when it comes to practicing. Each week, I give students individual assignments that I know will improve their learning and playing abilities, and I expect those assignments to be fulfilled by the next lesson. A failure to do so will result in frustration for both myself and my student.

However, I know that nobody is perfect, and I myself have had my share of weeks where life happens, and I simply don't progress as much as I would like. As a teacher, I understand this perfectly, and I will always strive to listen to my students, and work with them through their difficulties or struggles.

My daughter had Drew as her first teacher for the 2015-2016 school year. He was excellent at explaining concepts and techniques to her as she began to learn the flute. He helped her to have fun as she learned. He is patient, knowledgeable, positive, and communicates concepts and expectations well. We would have loved to have him stay in the area and continue as her teacher.

I had the privilege of having Drew as my private flute teacher for the 2015-2016 school year, and I would have loved to remain his student if he hadn't moved. He's incredibly patient, thoughtful, and hardworking, and he helped me correct problems that previous teachers never even noticed. I improved in so many areas in a short period of time, including overall tone, physical technique, performance psychology, practice habits, and applying musicality to my performance. Easily the best teacher I've ever had.

About Pooja
Pooja’s love for music began at the age of 4 when she began to seek training in Indian classical music- vocals and harmonium. She has successfully completed Madhyama from Gandharva Mahavidyalaya, Hyderabad. While pursuing a Computer Science Engineering degree, she performed on keyboards at sought-after venues as a part of classic rock bands. During this time, she recognized her growing passion for music. She has successfully completed Grade 6 in music theory (ABRSM) and Electronic keyboard (Trinity College of London). She moved to Sydney, Australia to study music at a Bachelor’s level from Academy of Music and Performing Arts (AMPA).

After graduating, she had the opportunity to train students of all ages and levels at two different music organizations in Sydney. She believes in designing a lesson plan according to the student's needs an
d interests in order to maintain a fun learning process while developing good piano technique. Pooja's students will learn sight reading, listening skills, musicianship and improvisation while learning their favorite songs.
