In my lessons I really listen to my students especially when it comes to the type of music that they want to learn. Many times they will bring ideas to me that they have heard or seen. I do insist on reading and using the music as a tool to improve on sight reading, rhythm and other basic studies of music. I try to make it enjoyable and fun and not a stressful experience.

My approach to learning piano is simple, to demystify what goes on at the keyboard, as soon as possible. I want to break down the barriers for playing so that they are minimized or made nonexistent. I listen to the concerns of the student and offer advice on what needs work. We will create achievable goals together and play what we want to play, together. My specialties are pop music, jazz piano, and improvisation. Feel free to contact me with availability questions or to see if you/your student would be a good fit.

I like to teach each lesson, for both voice and piano, by spending equal time on ear-training/sight-reading (sight-singing), music theory, technique, and repertoire.

When I teach ear-training to pianists, we do a lot of count-clapping and tonal memory drills. Count-clapping is a way to develop rhythmic accuracy. The act of speaking (counting) while clapping a rhythm activates more of the senses and therefore leaves a stronger impression on the brain, very similar to teaching reading comprehension by getting students to read aloud. Tonal memory is nothing more than developing a pianist’s listening abilities so they can quickly memorize what they’ve heard and recreate it on their instrument. I don’t teach pianists to play by ear, however, but I’ve always had great respect for musicians who have this ability.

Now, piano technique means different things to different pianists. For me, I firmly agree with the teachings found in Alfred’s Premier Piano Course. This is fairly new ...

My son Burke has taken piano lessons from Stephen McCool for a few years and we think he is AWESOME! He shows a genuine interest in his students, stays serious about what he is teaching but also brings humor in to keep students from feeling stressed. It is clear that it brings him joy to share his love of music with his students. Mr. McCool is an excellent teacher and I would highly recommend him for students of any age.
Andrew N.
The first lesson was superb. Andrew really enjoyed his first piano class and really liked learning it from Mr. McCool. After class, Andrew was immediately motivated to do his practice. Mr. McCool is very encouraging, he makes the lesson easy going while making his student learned quickly (without pressure). We look forward to the next lessons with him. Leaving the students with their own desire to learn and to love music is indeed very important. He delivers that traits well.

Learn Video Game, Anime or Classical Piano!

It is my goal to develop in each of my students a comprehensive understanding of music which enables them to play the piano with utmost enjoyment and musicality. Quality piano instruction is achieved through focused private lessons. Although with many students I emphasize classical repertoire, it really doesn't work with every student. Each student's curriculum is ALWAYS tailored to their interests and goals. I find encouragement is absolutely necessary but students must try their best. My teaching style consists of a fun, relaxed environment where students can feel like they can express themselves fully and learn much at the same time. Mastery at the piano is so much more than learning to press the right keys at the right time. Music is about expressing and sharing human emotions and feelings that are unspoken and is something we can all be touched by.

About Sabrina

I've been banging on the piano since I was 3, but piano became more structured when I turned 7 and I've loved piano so much since then! I've been classically trained in the US and then later in Italy so all together I have 19 years piano playing experience. My favorite genre is Modern Japanese Cl

I have been teaching private piano lessons for five years, and I love working with children of all ages and skill levels. I have been playing the piano for 17 years, and began at a very young age. Because of this, I strongly believe that if there is a desire to learn, the age you start does not matter. I work well with both beginner level students and intermediate level students. I was taught using the Suzuki method, and I use parts of that method in my own teaching. I also incorporate basic music theory lessons into my teaching.

About Abigail

I'm currently a student at Eastman School of Music, majoring in Piano Performance. I began taking piano lessons when I was two years old and loved every minute of it. I enjoy working with children of all ages, and strongly believe that if there is a desire to learn, the age at which you begin does

"Alex is very patient and able to adapt to her students. I studied with her for a year and also got to see other students work with her and she always had a way of getting each student to accomplish their goals. I think when you look for a teacher, you really are looking for someone to teach you how to learn. So many teachers tell you something or tell you what to do but never help you develop a skillset. Alex is different in that she absolutely focuses on developing a fundamental process so that each student not only learns but knows how to learn. As a result, there is progress I can see immediately, of course, but also years down the road. If you're looking for a teacher seriously, consider someone who will make a lasting impact and will make you a better overall person— not just tell you to do something and move on. Alex is a teacher who, regardless if you pursue music, you will come out better because of her teachings. Highly recommend!"

He’s the perfect blend of classical and cool, which goes over well with the kids, inspiring a love of music while really learning form and technique. He’s also giving me refresher lessons so it’s good to see him work with all three levels at one time. We highly recommend Seth!"

5 Reasons Why Hanon Exercises are Useless

Are Hanon exercises really effective at teaching piano students? Below, piano teacher James F. shares five reasons why he believes Hanon exercises aren't as useful as many think... A lot of piano teachers swear by the old familiar Hanon exercises as a great way of teaching technique to their students. I strongly disagree. I’m familiar with a lot of different ways of developing piano technique, and I think that Hanon is among the least efficient. Why? Below I’ve provided fiv …
