About Stephen M.

I like to teach each lesson, for both voice and piano, by spending equal time on ear-training/sight-reading (sight-singing), music theory, technique, and repertoire.
When I teach ear-training to pianists, we do a lot of count-clapping and tonal memory drills. Count-clapping is a way to develop rhythmic accuracy. The act of speaking (counting) while clapping a rhythm activates more of the senses and therefore leaves a stronger impression on the brain, very similar to teaching reading comprehension by getting students to read aloud. Tonal memory is nothing more than developing a pianist’s listening abilities so they can quickly memorize what they’ve heard and recreate it on their instrument. I don’t teach pianists to play by ear, however, but I’ve always had great respect for musicians who have this ability.
Now, piano technique means different things to different pianists. For me, I firmly agree with the teachings found in Alfred’s Premier Piano Course. This is fairly
About Stephen
As for my training, I have two degrees in vocal performance from Georgia State University and am currently “continuing education” as a staff singer at the renowned Episcopal Cathedral of St. Philip in Atlanta.
And not being a stranger to accomplishments in teaching (voice and piano), in 2013 I was recognized as a Top Teacher for student retention, communication with parents and staff, general positive feedback, and overall professionalism. In addition, both my voice and piano students regularly receive superior ratings at the local National Federation of Music Clubs festivals, pass ABRSM theory and piano exams, earn leading roles in school productions, and place in local talent shows.
P.S. For potential voice students, how many of you want to be a famous opera singer? My guess is, not many of you (to say the least :) However, what if I say, who would like to pretend they’re a famous bullfighter, a bird catcher (who likes to dress like a bird), an Ancient Egyptian, or a King or Queen while singing awesome music? Hopefully, more of you would try it. That’s why I love opera and classical singing. So I encourage you to watch, not just listen to, classical singing. You may be surprised at how cool it can be.

Piano lessons consist of three parts: theory, technique and song repertoire. I help my students make the connection between what they can already hear, and what that looks like on the page.
About Letha

My lessons include a warmup, music theory work, vocal or instrumental technique and then a vast selection of song repertoire to support new ideas in both technique and theory. Students are directed to watch or listen to examples of master performances in their field of studies. Clear weekly goals are made between lessons and I am always encouraging! Whatever life throws at you during the week doesn't have to stop your studies cold- we will come up with a plan that fits your lifestyle.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I regularly use the internet in lessons as well as standard published educational texts.
*** Specialties ***
I have been told that I am especially good at helping people make the jump from playing by rote to reading from the page. In vocal instruction, I am familiar with three schools of technique: the psycho-imagery school, the "anatomical" school, and the Italian "open throat" approach. My background in acting also contributes basic vocal projection techniques to vocal training. I am comfortable with all genres of music, including pop, rock, soul, R&B, gospel, jazz and opera. In instrumental studies, I am a woodwind doubler, reading fluently and transposing on-the-spot . As a jazz and gospel artist I improvise primarily on the flute and saxophone. My piano skills are equivalent to a second-year college piano major. I can improvise accompaniments as well as read piano scores. In addition to being a certified teacher in Georgia, I attained national certification through the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards in 2004.

About Maria
The mission of my studio is to create well-rounded, educated musicians who will always have a lifelong passion for the art no matter their long-term goals. I strive for my students to be:
(1) Lifelong learners who develop successful learning habits.
(2) Creative and critical thinkers who will become effective communicators.
(3) Responsible and respectful members of society who respect other cultures.
(4) Able to set short-term and long-term goals and be able to see them through to their success.
TEACHING PHILOSOPHY:
It is of the utmost importance that my students are well-educated in their chosen instrument; they must know and understand music and music-making. Students who can play are a dime a dozen, but students who understand the music they are playing are often hard to find. I teach students to kno
Although students differ in ability and development, I maintain high expectations for our students. I expect attention and respect in lessons, faithful and diligent practice, careful adherence to instructions, and an “I’ll-do-my-best” attitude. If students regularly meet these expectations, then they will excel to the level that they are able. It is my joy to help students master their music, to do the best they can, and to strive for and achieve excellence.
Lastly, I want students to enjoy and appreciate their instrument, music, and music-making; and I know as as a teacher, I am very influential in making this happen. Students develop enjoyment of music by understanding music, experiencing success in music, being exposed to good and varied genres of music, and receiving instruction from a teacher who is enthusiastic and encouraging. It is my goal to provide all of these opportunities for students, and as a result their lives will be enriched as they enjoy their instrument.
