It is important to have teacher, student, and parents work together to see the accomplishments happen in the future. I make the lessons meaningful, so that my student can retain the information and practice effectively at home. My ultimate goal is to have my student think critically and listen carefully, so that they can become their own teacher.

About Richard

I started playing the violin when I was 12 years old. Some of my notable teachers include: Ricardo Cyncynates, Rochelle Abramson, Guido Lamell, and Tatiana Chulochnikova. I enjoyed playing in the summer music camp at Interlochen and Curtis Institute of Music Summerfest for Adults. I performed as a

I do a variety of styles in music for the violin. I use whatever method (book or teaching style) is needed to teach what the student needs to learn. I have been teaching violin for 25 years. Depending on age, we will start in either Essential Elements or Suzuki. All beginners will start the bow after they can read the first 8 notes. All intermediates will be able to play 2 octave scales from 3 sharps to 3 flats as well as well into Wolfhart book 1. They will also be able to shift into third position cleanly and will be starting on vibrato. For Advanced players, we will be working on Concertos, sonatas, and partitas if they wish to go classical. IF they wish other styles, we will have started that in intermediate. All students will have an opportunity to go through the music development program, if they are interested.

About Chris

I have been teaching private violin for over 20 years, and private viola/cello for about 10. I have taught in Charles and St. Mary's County Public schools. I am a member of American Strings Teacher's Association, National Association for Music Educators (Maryland Music Educators Association), and t

If you’re looking for a dedicated, knowledgeable and patient strings teacher, you will love Mrs. Heins. Both of my sons have been taking lessons from Mrs. Heins for several years (one for viola and one for cello). They have learned so much under her instruction, such as earning All-County and All-State honors. They also practice their live performance skills twice a year during informal musical concerts. Mrs. Heins also offers participation in the Royal Conservatory Music Development program, which can earn your child credit for college. She is a gem and should you choose her, you won’t be disappointed.

Music can be a very intimate practice. To share, create and collaborate can be challenging if not fostered in the beginning of musical education. Lending students a safe and educational place to create can lead to great confidence that spans all areas of life and study. Because of this, I encourage involvement in the community where possible. For instance, I most recently had my violin students collaborate with the local youth guitar orchestra to perform a small concert series. I challenged my students to ideate and take a hands on approach to arranging the music. The relationships they built were forever lasting, the skills the gained were expansive and each witnessed their own improvement with excitement. Engagement fosters a higher-level of learning and development.

Fostering creativity leads to development but it can only grow from the fundamentals. The more tools in the box, the more one can create. Some discipline is needed to gain the understanding necessary to reach any ...

"My son has been taking violin lessons with Dongbin for almost 3 years since he started playing at age 5. Dongbin has been a great teacher, and my son enjoys learning from him. His lessons include not only violin playing, but also clapping rhythms, singing notes, and other exercises that have been effective ways of learning for my son, while keeping him engaged throughout the lesson. Dongbin recognizes my son’s strengths in playing violin, but also identifies the skills and techniques that he should focus on to become a better player and to build a strong foundation as he progresses. He also gives suggestions to help sharpen those skills while practicing at home. We have been very pleased with our experience with Dongbin as our son’s violin teacher."

"Marisa is by far one of the best teachers I have ever worked with! I was very fortunate to get to work with Marisa during my undergraduate degree while she worked as a Teaching Assistant at CU Boulder. Marisa has an exceptional understanding of the fundamentals of violin along with an informed and intuitive sense of musicality. She was always able to give specific practice techinques that advanced my techincal playing while enhancing the musicality and phrasing of whatever piece I was working on. I was always perfectly encouraged and challenged in lessons with Marisa. I can confidently say that Marisa had an imense positive impact on my playing, and I would whole-heartedly recommend her for all students looking for high quality instruction!"
