Peter has not only honed my daughter's previous skills, but introduced techniques and music theory that was completely new to her. Peter has sought out music that will challenge and interest my daughter specifically. We've been very pleased.

Peter is an extremely patient and knowledgeable teacher; it has been a privilege studying the piano and cello with him for the past 2 months. In that brief time, I have completed 16 of the 17 pieces in the first Suzuki book for cello! I have also enjoyed the piano exercises and repertoire he has assigned, which are technical but melodious. He has a great understanding of theory and technique; he is very personable and encouraging; and he was flexible and accommodating about the times and modes (in person and online) for my lessons. I recommend him wholeheartedly to other adult beginners like me and am grateful to be under his tutelage.

My teaching career began while I was a Conservatory graduate student. Teaching and performing are complementary aspects of being a musician. Instructing others provides a deeper, more thorough understanding of my own approach to playing. Several decades of performing in professional orchestras and chamber music ensembles grants a life time of practical experience to share with my students.

While the serious pursuit of a professional level of accomplishment on two diverse instruments such as the violin and the flute is unusual, the idiomatic characteristics of each one have given me unique insights into other. Over the years I have discovered concepts that have enhanced my performing and teaching of both. These ideas have allowed me to present an integrated approach and perspective for both instruments that not many other teachers would have.

My pedagogical philosophy provides the aspiring student with a greater understanding of the other instruments with whom they will ...

Jamie is one of those stellar people who is good at everything she does. She is a first rate teacher, performing violinist, Flutist and scholar. I recommend her without any hesitation.

I was in my mid 50s at the time I began violin lesson with Jami. As an adult beginner, I was apprehensive about learning the violin. I had no familiarity with the violin or string instruments and I also had concerns regarding scheduling lessons due to an often erratic work schedule and a busy family life. Several violin teachers I had contacted prior to Jami were unwilling to teach an adult beginner.

Jami was an amazing teacher! She was personable, encouraging and alleviated all my fears and concerns. She understood my busy schedule and was very accommodating. The lessons were more relaxed than I had initially anticipated. It did not take long before I began feeling comfortable handling the violin and bow. Through Jami, I also learned a great deal about the history and construction of the violin, music for the violin and music theory.

Jami taught a mix of Suzuki, scales and multiple technique and method books; all complementing each other on my path to progressing as a violinist. As an adult, it was nice to gradually incorporate more tunes a mature adult would appreciate playing while continuing to build on the basics. After the first few months, I particularly enjoyed learning how to play violin duets with Jami or having Jami accompany me on the piano. I always left my lessons with a feeling of accomplishment.

I only ceased lessons due to Jami relocating, but I am looking forward to online lessons once I am more technologically capable of doing so. You will not be disappointed if choosing Jami as a teacher!

I have worked with Jami Bale for over ten years. She has deep knowledge of both violin and flute, and has profound skills in chamber music. Ms. Bale is demanding yet very compassionate teacher, her students excel at a fast pace and make wonderful professional and amateur musicians.
Ms. Bale was an irreplaceable member of the Chamber Music Seminar faculty and Pittsburgh Youth Concert Orchestra.
Whether the student needs to only keep up with the school curriculum or place a top chair in a youth orchestra, Ms. Bale will be there for you every inch of the way.

Mrs. Hammonds is such a wonderful teacher! I came to her when I just started high school and was overwhelmed with joy when I found such a great teacher. Focusing on memorization, technique, and working on a solid foundation even after playing for 10 years prior, really reflected in my playing. I think she was the teacher who really showed me why I wanted to play violin and set my foundation up to improve more and more even today!
Kim
As an adult student that let my violin sit idle for too many years, Hollis was able to help me regain some basics skills and build upon them to re-learn different playing styles. Her approach was refreshing and focused on helping me re-learn some classical pieces that were familiar to my background. In addition, she introduced some jazz and fiddle pieces that I was interested in branching out with and worked with me to fine tune bowing techniques for each style.
I would highly recommend Hollis as an instructor for anyone starting out or looking to improve upon existing skills!

"Ms. Lee is the best instructor ever!!!! When I started taking lessons with her, I was blown away by how much progress we made in one short lesson! She helped me grow so much! She is everything you would see in a perfect teacher: Kind, compassionate, knowledgable, and has the most amazing personality! She knows exactly what to do for every piece of music that I learn, and teaches me new techniques in every lesson that I carry on to every ensemble I participate in! Going off to my university next year, I am sad that I cannot have lessons with her when I leave. But I know that she was the one who got me there, who prepared me for college level of music at a university ranked number one in the nation for orchestral music. She helped make me who I am today, and I will forever be grateful to have her as a tutor and a friend! and to whom it may concern, I promise you that if you pick her as your tutor you are making the best decision of your life!"

The first question they will ask is often, is it hard to play violin?  Learning to play any musical instrument can present challenges to the beginning student. However, much of the difficulty in learning any instrument rests with the student’s attitude. If something is perceived as hard, it can be easy to get frustrated at the first sign of trouble and simp …
