Well, so far this is only my first bass lesson, so I didn't even know if I would like it. But I must say I'm more excited than ever! Kevin is clearly a virtuoso player, with a pleasant, relaxed demeanor, clear teaching style, and the best sense of humor. That really takes any edge off any nervousness. I'm looking forward to the next one!

I have been playing piano since I was 6 years old. It is a wonderful way to make up songs and recognize patterns in music. Under my direction, a student of the piano can expect to learn to play and contextualize complex chord shapes, to read melodies and charts, and to play along to their favorite music using music theory and skills (the ability to play by ear) and improvise. I am particularly good at explaining musical modes, and putting that knowledge to use in a way that jump starts a new students ability to play with various types of popular music more quickly than your average suzuki-method teacher.

About Julian
My musical background is uniquely rooted in classical training and popular music (non-classical) experience. I have professionally played toured and/or taught on a variety of instuments including Bass, Drums, Guitar, Piano, Ukulele and Voice for the past 8 years all over the world. My main focus has been bass guitar, on which I've played in over a dozen local bands. In addition, I received my Music BA from CU Boulder in 2014. My classical training in combination with my experience as a song writer, multi-instrumentalist and band leader gives me a uniquely well-rounded teaching style. I aim to teach and inspire students to use music as a joyful platform for learning important skills such as diligent practice, cognitive flexibilty, and creative expression.

Growing up and playing in Hawaii and Colorado, I have had the opportunity to l
earn from prolific, passionate and talented musicians from all over the globe. With my students, I love to share my experience, appreciation for eclecticism, nuance and groove while also emphasizing the importance of a theoretical foundation in music and comprehension of aural skills (hearing music in a theoretical context) as a means to fluent apprehension in any genre. Ultimately, this makes me a very flexible and expeditious teacher. What would you like to learn?

If you have any questions, or would like to chat, please feel free to call me at three O three 5032572 or message me via my Take Lessons profile. I look forward to it!

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can provide most necessary lesson materials, however it is necessary that students have their own instruments on which to play and practice. I may request that students buy some materials such as tuners (for stringed instruments), lesson books, or music applications, but these are optional purchases.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I can teach in my home studio in South Boulder if that is your preference. The studio has keyboard, bass, drums, guitar, ukulele and vocal microphones. Students should bring their own instruments to the studio lessons (drums and piano provided in the studio) Parents may attend the lessons if they choose.

*** Specialties ***
Pop, Rock, Jazz, Blues, Reggae, West-African Highlife, Funk, and Soul

***Some additional background to my experience***
I grew up "noodling". I avoided the difficult task of learning to read proficiently until I was almost 18. Looking back I realize that for me, music was a way to relax and pause internal dialogue. I would create music, especially on the piano that was entirely my own, and based solely on intuition. I got by in piano lessons and choir for so many years as kid by relying on an intuitive ability to aurally recall music and "play by ear". Eventually, I was turned on to the necessity of being able to read when I was accepted into a nationally competitive choral program at Fairview High School under the direction of Ron Revier. Shortly after that, I picked up a guitar and discovered music theory.
Realizing that reading, and theory were inherently different things allowed by to accelerate quickly at music theory which opened so many doors for me creatively. Suddenly, my ability to improvise in context and write my own songs was born.
I realized that every note I sang or played was part of an essential structure, whether or not I was paying attention to it. This is why I particularly enjoy teaching aural skills, sight reading, and music theory in conjunction with whatever repertoire or skillset a student wants to learn. These things facilitate becoming one's own teacher which is the most important thing I can pass on to a student. If you can contextualize everything you hear, you can more easily pursue whatever type of music inspires you.
Understanding theoretical things like musical modes creates a structure around the seemingly elusive nature of musical improvisation. It comes naturally to some, but is stubbornly avoided by others. I assure you, anyone can do it with some guidance. Through the years, I have developed a handful of shortcuts and tools that allow elementary musicians to start creating their own music that is not necessarily oriented in genre or style, but can be applied to all of them. I look forward to sharing my passion with new students!

Julian has spent lots and lots of fun time with his nephews and nieces (age 13-2), playing music with and teaching--ukulele, piano, guitar and drums over the last few years, and as a result they all have some great skills, confidence, and excitement about music. He's kind and very tuned in to where his students are.
I'm his Dad so I've seen how rewarding it can be for his students. He's also given me a basic set of skills on the guitar. It goes without saying, I recommend him highly!!

I offer lessons with a fun and encouraging atmosphere and attitude. Using a variety of musical materials and methods, students experience a fun and motivating way to learn. I help students find fun ways to keep up on practicing and how to enjoy the time spent on their instrument. My students enjoy performing frequently to gain confidence as young musicians. Students are challenged to progress on a weekly basis through quality technique and theory methods that are stimulating and comprehensive.

About Dominik
Hi, I'm Dominik and I graduated with a piano performance degree and a music education degree with trumpet from Metropolitan State University of Denver where I studied with Professor Hsing-Ay Hsu, and Dr. Micheal Hengst. I began music at 8 years old, with piano lessons under Ann Riggs. A few years later, I also began trumpet lessons and joined several choirs. I continued exploring music, traveling with community choirs and bands, and joined the piano program at the Denver School of the Arts during High School. I really enjoy ensemble performance and I've participated in wind ensembles, orchestras, chamber ensembles, accompanying, brass ensembles, and pit orchestra for musical theatre while attending Metro State University.

I really enjoy teaching music and believe that each student can accomphlish many great things through music. I hav
e been trained in and have performed in many different genres and styles and offer a wide range of musical knowledge to meet my students needs.

I welcome piano students of all ages and levels of experience. I don't have a set curriculum or required method book, as I feel that it's important to tailor lessons to the individual student. I work with my students to learn how to read music and feel it's important to include theory and ear training to have a more complete understanding of how and why we do what we do as we're playing. I specialize in classical music, but am happy to work on music from other genres such as rock, pop, and Broadway, or others. I feel this allows my students to be fully engaged at their lessons when the music we're working on is something that interests them.

About Molly
I have loved music almost all my life. I began my lifelong journey to immerse myself in learning piano at age seven. At thirteen, I added violin lessons as well. By the time I reached high school, I knew that music would be my major in college, and that music would always be a vital part of my life.
I played violin with my high school orchestra, including taking part in productions of Fiddler on the Roof and Anything Goes. I also played piano with the orchestra, and performed the first movement of Grieg’s Piano Concerto in A minor in concert. I played the piano for my school’s top show choir as well, performing with the group throughout the Denver area. I was also a member of the Colorado All-State Orchestra. All this time, I continued my private lessons in both piano and violin.
While still in high school, I auditioned for, and got,
the title role in the Country Dinner Playhouse’s production of Fiddler on the Roof.
After high school, I chose the University of Denver’s Lamont School of Music to continue my music education. I graduated Magna Cum Laude with my Bachelor of Music degree in piano. I was invited to join the academic honor society, Phi Beta Kappa, as well as the music honor society, Pi Kappa Lambda. I have also completed my Master of Music in piano at Lamont School of Music.
While in college, I accompanied many vocal and instrumental students, and discovered the joy of chamber and collaborative music. I formed partnerships and friendships with many other musicians, including professional musicians in several countries. I have also worked as a pianist for several area churches and spent one holiday season as a pianist at Nordstrom.
I believe that music should be an integral part of a well-rounded education. I hope that my passion for music will enable me to help others find the same joy and appreciation.

*** Lesson Details ***
I believe that every student learns differently and that those differences should be embraced. For that reason, I do not advocate a specific method or curriculum. I will work with each student individually to determine what method of learning will work best for them. Together we will decide what our curriculum should be so that we can incorporate not only learning, but fun into lessons.

*** Studio Equipment ***

My youngest piano student is 3 and is doing incredibly well! My oldest student was 78 and had always wanted to learn to play. I can help you with your piano goals from beginner to advanced, from the basics of reading music and playing a song for your family to performance auditions and everything in between.
I use a number of methods, however, I am open to help you learn through a method of your choice if you have one you enjoy. I will guarantee to having you play a familiar song within one month!

About Amber
Growing up in Denver, I had a huge desire for singing and performing. By age 14, I was taking weekly singing & piano lessons, was acting constantly in local productions-many times getting the lead role.
Some of the productions I acted in: The Wizard of Oz (Dorothy), Camelot, Anything Goes (Reno Sweeney), How to Succeed in Business (Smitty), Carousel, Oklahoma, Les Miserables, and Oliver (Nancy.)
I received a 4-year scholarship to the Conservatory of Music in Stockton, CA. at the University of the Pacific. Upon graduation, I entered graduate school at the University of North Texas to continue my singing and piano studies, along with music theory, history, and musical video production.
Upon graduating UNT, I was chosen among 200 performing arts majors to be the featured soloist at the UNT commencement ceremonies. This led to an off
er to tour Italy with the Rome Festival Orchestra. For the next two summers I performed in Copenhagen, Istanbul, Rome and Berlin with the Berlin Philharmonic.

Shortly after my 37th birthday, I decided I wanted to learn to play piano. Although I hadn't touched a musical instrument in over 20 years and forgotten a vast majority of what I had learned as a child, Ruth was there to coach me through the process. She's incredibly knowledgeable about music, shown flexibility when I've had scheduling conflicts, and genuinely cares about my progress. I've been studying saxophone with Jeff for a little over a year and a half now. In that time I've grown greatly as a saxophone player, musician, and improviser. Jeff does a great job of breaking things down to an understandable level while still keeping sight of the big picture - saying something important during a solo, and saying it in a way that keeps the audience interested. Lesson materials are always challenging enough to stay busy while never being too overwhelming. Jeff is a talented musician and teacher who knows what makes jazz, jazz. Anyone who is willing to put the work in and dedicate themselves will experience a lot of growth and learning with him.

He is learning theory, sight reading, musicianship, etc. Catherine does such a good job connecting with him at his level and accommodating his personality while still challenging him with what she knows he can handle. He loves taking lessons with Miss Catherine so much that his little brother, now 6, started taking lessons with her as well, and he also loves her and going to see her every week. She makes lessons fun and educational, and that's something that my children really respond to and love.
