About Rene
Knowing at the age of 5 that music was my life, by being brought up surrounded by praise music and gospel, my early exposure to music helped me to find every Instrument and style just my thing! I wanted to play everything and learn all aspects of music. I started with singing in the children's choir and then developed into piano and music theory. At the age of 12 I began to learn classical guitar, and at 15 took on various styles like Flamenco, Jazz and Rock. I graduated from High School having played in the school band achieving recognition In national Institutions Like IAJE (International Association for Jazz Education) and state band finals. I was also composing from a very early age, and at 18 released my first album (self-titled) which can still be heard and purchased today through various music outlets, since i have released over 15
albums with various ensembles and bands. In college I already knew from my previous experience that I wanted to teach and pass on the joy that music brought to my life. I studied Music Theory and Jazz and finished my degree in Music Education. I have been teaching all in all for about 14 yrs. And I have enjoyed every minute I have spent with my students learning as much from them, as them from me. I am looking forward to meeting new and eager students who really want to bring their inner music out to share with the rest of us music aficionados! and develop their skills to the peak of their abilities.

*** Lesson Details ***
My teaching method ranges depending on the student. I believe in my experience that everyone learns differently, therefore everyone develops at their own pace. I try to find key strengths in each student and expose this to their advantage, using their abilities to further develop their skills, this method has shown the most promising results and students usually find themselves playing and performing just a couple of months after their first lessons. Part of my method involves a lot of performance and recital opportunities to help break any fears and inhibitions a student may bring with them. Music is about sharing, so an early exposure to this method helps to strengthen and stabilize a core acceptance of a students style and path, giving them and those close to them a very clear picture of their development and achievements.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Has all instruments at both his home and college studio

*** Travel Equipment ***
I provide lesson material, song charts and a progression scale. I require student to have an Instrument and recommended technique literature.

*** Specialties ***
My classical training began in High School with Influences in Segovia, and Romero I studied classical for 4 yrs. and trained in Jazz and Improvisation with performances In Big Band and group ensemble. Also sang and played in the school gospel choir.

****Personal Statement*****

If you needed a reason

There is no question that music touches us instantly and activates images, emotions and memories that linger with us throughout our lives. As a casual listener or an obsessive music elitist, there are times in our lives when we get blown away by a sound so unique our entire body vibrates and resonates with the touch of something out of this world. I can honestly say when this happens to me I feel as close to a spiritual connection than anything I have experienced otherwise. I believe it is these exact events that have triggered my need to be completely involved in the making, performing and consuming of music. The creative process, to me, is the single obvious reason we exist in this world. We create and share, learn and interpret, build on previous ideas and inspire others to perfect upon this process. It is no doubt a very humbling experience to realize you are part of it all. During this process you come to realize how important you are as an Individual, how there is no other vessel like you in this world, nor has there ever been or ever will. You are here now and your voice, your talent, your gift is an instrument to the great choir of the human spirit. No one but you can relate this, a reason to be, to create, to give.

I have studied and traveled in Mexico and Spain. My hometown and Bay Area history are full of Spanish speakers, a great way to put my language skills to use. My students have improved their grades and found joy in learning a new language. I hope my practically-minded method will appeal to you. I have written and spoken extensively in Spanish. Poetry, research papers, music . . . Thanks for your interest, and please do not hesitate to contact me personally for more information. I hope to be able to meet your educational needs. Thank you.

About Lars
I began to teach guitar at 16 years of age. I have taught seven- to 60-year-old students in a wide variety of styles. From age 12 to 21 I took private guitar lessons regularly. Now, I have a lesson every once in a while. I studied jazz guitar primarily with Randy Vincent, one of the San Francisco Bay Area's greatest guitar players. Aside from teaching lessons as a job, I have played guitar in many concerts and continue to do so. Before moving to San Francisco for university studies, I gained a lot of experience and valuable education with guitar. I played in the jazz bands in Junior High and High School. I went to four years of a week-long summer jazz camp called Jazz Camp West, where I took classes, played open mics and had fun with many musicians, making some good friends. I hold BA degrees in Music (Jazz Guitar) and Spanish, as well as
an MA in Music, from San Francisco State University. By now, I am confident in working with whatever musical material students offer! Thank you.

*** Lesson Details ***
I am a laid back teacher, but I definitely expect students to practice what I suggest they practice. I advise that students use method books or sheet music of some sort, and I will certainly make notes for them and create materials they can learn from. I always teach based on the goals of the student and what type of music they enjoy, but I also like to guide the student in a direction I think would benefit them. I usually introduce music to play right away, conforming of course to the skill level and interest of the student. I now a play seven-string guitar that differs from the standard six-string guitar in that it has one string lower than the low E of a six-string. It will be practical to aide students by accompanying with a bass range instrument.

*** Specialties ***
Guitar
My guitar roots are mainly Jazz, but I am always happy to employ a very wide range of styles. I work with both modal and tonal musical styles.

I took 8 years of Spanish classes and lived in Ecuador where I used Spanish on a daily basis.

My teaching philosophy is to help students engage in learning. I find that a personal connection to new information makes it more engaging and meaningful, and students remember it better too. It's also more fun.

That being said, if learning is more readily achieved for your student through other methods, we will do whatever works best. I cater to results, because my ultimate goal is the student's success.

About Joshua
I am a tutor who earned a music teaching degree, substitute taught, and didn't become a school teacher. I held professional tech retail jobs and am supplementing my life with my passion - education.

Whatever subject or instrument I teach, I celebrate students' successes; and I enjoy helping learners have new aha moments.

The majority of my students take guitar, bass guitar, or Spanish lessons. I am an educator and help my students learn other skills and knowledge sets too.

I went to Ohio State University for college, earned a BA in Music Education, and graduated Cum Laude. I also spent 4 years in the Ohio State University Marching Band.

Through my healing journey, I've developed patience, insight, and understanding for my students' learning processes.

I'm excited to help you incorporate new skills into your life!

In search of helping our 10 year old son build some self-confidence we sought out clarinet lessons this summer. He started playing in school last year, and it was something our reluctant son liked "enough" to want to build up some competency. Joshua has been amazing! He finds just the right amount of challenge to encourage my son to practice, but not get discouraged. My son looks forward to his lesson each week and told me that he isn't even sure he wants to switch to saxophone next year because he is having so much fun playing the clarinet. Joshua is amazing with children, and has spent time getting to know our kiddo and find out what will work best for him. Patient, calm, and inspiring--very talented instructor.

Joshua Blatman is a fantastic music teacher. He has a great resume, is experienced in a variety of instruments, and a solid background in teaching.

I whole-heartedly recommend Joshua for anyone of any age and any skill level who wants to enrich their life learning guitar. I appreciate the fact that he makes the time and has the patience to adapt to my needs. Joshua is flexible in scheduling - especially for those unforeseen incidents - which is appreciated.

Being an adult beginner with music lessons, Joshua eases my frustration on immediately wanting to play perfect notes and chords. I look forward to continuing lessons.

Great first lesson. Kathleen contacted me in advance to find out what I’d like to work on and she was prepared with several options tonight. Her helpful tips on folding and diagram reading were just what I was looking for. We agreed on the next piece and I’m already looking forward to our next lesson. Thank you!

I was looking for a boost to my new hobby with origami, and have had two lessons so far with Kathleen. I couldn't be happier with the lesson experience; her approach is detailed, clear, easy to follow along with and relaxed. She was even folding upside down from her point of view so that I could see from across the table. I was really impressed. There's nothing like learning from a real person. Definitely looking forward to more lessons in the future.

Hola! If you are here, it is because you share the same passion of learning a new language just like me or Spanish can really come in handy for you to know... Or both! Let me help you with your goal and teach you in an interactive, fun way, where we'll focus on your conversational skills as well as grammar. I believe that in order to tackle the difficulties of learning a foreign language, there is no better solution than to talk to a native speaker!

About Mariana
I'm currently serving as an Americorps Vista volunteer at the New York Immigration Coalition to fight poverty among minority groups in the city. I just graduated as a magna cum laude from CUNY Hunter College with a Bachelor's of Arts in Anthropology and Spanish.

I have always loved teaching my native tongue to people so they can be part of a rich culture and enjoy the profound and vast literature that comes with it. I believe in the joy of communicating with others and be able to see the world in different colors and perspectives.

I began teaching Spanish to friends at my college and that's how my journey with teaching the language as a freelancer began. My approach focuses on the conversational aspect with fun and educational icebreakers as well as grammar and structure.

I love playing the ukulele, painting in watercolor, reading sh
ort novels, and finding new yummy spots in NYC during the weekends.

After graduating the University of Rochester with a degree in Spanish Language and Literature, I moved to Madrid, Spain to teach English for two years. After those two years, I worked as a Spanish teacher at Kent Denver School, teaching levels 2, 3, and 5. I have lived/studied in both Ecuador and Spain. I am new to Los Angeles, but I'm not new to teaching, and there's nothing I love more than spreading my passion for the Spanish language!

About Ann
Hi!
I'm Ann, and I just recently moved to Los Angeles from Denver, Colorado where I'm originally from.
The past few years have been a whirlwind of experiences that have helped me become the foreign language teacher I am today! In college I studied Spanish and studied abroad in both Ecuador and Spain. After graduating, I moved to Madrid to become a high school/middle school English teacher, and I lived there for two years. Unfortunately, my visa expired so I had to return back to Colorado. I was lucky enough to work at my old high school in Denver as a lead Spanish teacher for levels 2, 3, and 5. After working there for a year, I decided I wanted to do some more traveling. I went back to Ecuador, then Cuba, and then I returned to Spain for 3 months to take a Spanish Teacher Certification course through the Instituto de Cervantes. After tr
aveling for the past 6 months, I've decided it's time to move to Los Angeles!
I like to stay current with popular culture in the States and abroad, and I love listening to Spanish music. While I have mostly lived abroad in Spain, I do my best to stay current with slang and grammar styles from all over the Spanish speaking world. I aim to make my lessons fun, dynamic, and I focus on teaching practical, useful Spanish that you will find in your everyday life.
Thanks for reading!
