I've been teaching violin for over ten years, and I've always found that a strengths-based, supportive stance is the strongest filter through which to receive the challenging material and feedback you'll be getting as you learn to play this difficult instrument. I will point out your strengths, so you can nuture them, and build on those strengths to a solid technique and explore them to find your unique musicality. I am your coach, and I am here to see you succeed!

About Kylie
I have been teaching music for over ten years, and my performing experience ranges from solo appearances with orchestras across the country to intimate chamber performances. I have studied under such renowned teachers as Anton Miller, Eugenia Choi, and Gregory Fulkerson, and my pedagogic education includes study under internationally renowned Suzuki educator Teri Einfeldt. I have held music directorships in ID and CT, and my students have won awards for their playing.

I am deeply interested in the ways in which experiencing and making art can act as a transformative power in an individual's life, and, by extension, in broader cultural contexts. I hold two degrees from the prestigious Hartt School of Music, and have experience teaching both children and adults.

I think Kylie is very sweet but I am giving a poor review due to (1) small space - which was one windowless non-soundproof room in a music store and (2) receiving two emails just now that she has canceled the next 2 weekends.

I've had a great first lesson. Learned a lot from Kylie. She understands me, her student, and like gauges my level and where to start improving my ability to play the violin. Very fun to be with, great sense of humor !

I'm very happy to be learning the violin with Kylie. She is highly skilled as a violinist, very engaging as a music instructor, and very compassionate as an educator/person.
She has helped me find a passion and skill for music i did not know i had. I come to every lesson excited to show what i've been practicing, and leave inspired to practice more.
She is also a very interesting person to talk to.
I'd whole-heartedly recommend Kylie as your music teacher! ^_^ Good luck!

My Background

I've been playing with classical ensembles and rock bands since 2001. Even though I started on classical trombone and rock guitar, I have come to expand my repertoire to a variety of instruments and genres. During my time in college I performed with the University choir, orchestra, and band. I also have organized, wrote/arranged for, and performed with a variety of bands in my home state of New Mexico, as well as Japan, and the San Francisco Bay Are
a.

Since 2006 I have been an active teacher. This profession has taken me everywhere from working with classical guitar classes in New Mexico high schools to Elementary students in Japan to a variety of private students of various musical instruments and genres everywhere I've been. Since relocating to the Bay Area in 2010, I've had the pleasure of working with lots of great students from kids to adults with a wide range of ambitions. Since 2012 I've been running my own full time studio.

Philosophy of Learning

Lessons are generally designed to work towards giving students the tools to accomplish their goals and become increasingly independent over time. While all students will study similar fundamentals regarding technique, theory, and performance, every lesson is as different as every person. What kind of music do you want to make? I'll tell you what you need to do to get there, and help you take the steps to achieve your aspirations.

I also love to help students put together a song, record, and produce it for them so that they can have a recording to share with their friends and family.

I also hold events for my students. (Check out our pictures and videos below!)
Younger students have the "Young Musicians Showcase" every few months where individual students and band classes have a chance to perform and celebrate their accomplishments with friends and family.
Adult students occasionally have events where they get a chance to get together and play music as well.

Aside from in-studio lessons, students also have the option to sign up for online lessons via Skype.
(*Online lessons offered during different times than in-studio lessons.)

*Unfortunately due to scheduling issues, I'm not currently accepting students for bi-weekly lessons. I can do regular weekly lessons, or occasional drop-in lessons, but bi-weekly appointments make it really hard for me to give the best scheduled times to my existing weekly students. I'm sorry for the inconvenience.

My studio is equipped with:

*Multiple Music Stands

*P.A. System

*Vocal and instrument microphones

*Guitars, Basses, and a Banjo

*Two guitar amps and a bass amp

*Various percussion including a fully equipped acoustic drum set

*A Roland V-Drums electronic drum set

*An electric piano console

*A MicroKorg Synthesizer

*A Tuba, Trombone, Cornet, and Flute

*An extensive physical and virtual music library

*A recording system that students are not only welcome to use but encouraged to

*HD Webcam and condenser microphone for high fidelity online lessons via Skype

About Kristen
My name is Kristen K. and I am an accomplished violinist and teacher from Lexington, Kentucky. I began my musical studies at age 7 and quickly discovered my passion and love for music. As a young musician, I attended numerous summer music festivals, participated in the Central Kentucky Youth Orchestra. I was a winner of two concerto competitions, which gave me the opportunity to perform solos with the youth orchestra. I continued my studies at the University of Kentucky as a Violin Performance major and it was there that I discovered my love for teaching music! After completing my performance degree, I decided to also pursue a Bachelor’s in Music Education. During my college career, I served as a teaching assistant in the University of Kentucky String Project, I taught group and private lessons at several local middle and high schools, an
d also maintained my own private violin and viola studio. I was also awarded the McCracken Scholarship Award for Excellence in Music Education. The most rewarding part of teaching has been seeing my students continually improve and reach their goals!

In addition to teaching, I also am an avid performer. I have been a member of the Lexington Philharmonic Orchestra for 7 years and was a member of the University of Kentucky Symphony Orchestra. I perform as a soloist, in chamber groups, and in orchestras regularly at various events and concerts. In the past few years I have attended international chamber music festivals in Prague, Czech Republic and in Lucca, Italy. I have also had the opportunity to perform with some of the world’s most renowned musicians including Itzhak Perlman, Midori, and Gil Shaham in additional to performing in the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. and in Carnegie Hall in New York City. Studying music has provided me with many wonderful opportunities to learn and to grow. It is my goal to help students really love and enjoy playing music and develop the skills that allow us to share the magic of beautiful sound. Maintaining a high level of mastery as well as continuing to learn about the art of teaching are fundamentally equal and of highest priority for me. Through teaching music, I hope to inspire students and help them reach their potential.

*** Lesson Details ***
My teaching style is relaxed and understanding of where each student is at, while always maintaining a quick pace for learning new skills and always expecting the student to put forth their best effort. I am very encouraging and positive. I work with each student and his or her parents to determine short and long term goals and try to best provide the materials, instruction and motivation to achieve those goals!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Lessons in the living room, well lit, piano, music stands

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in teaching classical music but I also teach bluegrass and fiddle. I particularly like the Suzuki Method for beginning to intermediate students, but when they become more advanced I begin to incorporate concertos and sonatas.

Elizabeth always greets us with a big smile and is full of laughs and jokes, which makes learning a difficult instrument a lot more enjoyable for my son. She's is very knowledgeable and eagerly explains technique and does not shy away from giving feedback and guidance, which has helped him improve a lot. I was so worried that he wouldn't like learning the violin or that he'd have a lot of difficulty, but neither of those have been the case. My husband and I have recommended Elizabeth to several of our friends and we are happy to provide her an online referral as well. Thank you Elizabeth for teaching our son the violin! - Elise & John

My main instrument is piano, however I have taken a year of violin lessons during my composition studies in Austria. I wanted to focus on my string instrument writing and also develop my violin playing skills (at the age of 33!).

Dr. Elizabeth proved herself to be a great teacher, who didn't only make my lessons fun (believe me, it's not that easy when you are at a certain age), but also made made things very interesting to me by relating the techniques I learned to string instrument writing (which is an amazing experience for a composer!).

Sometimes when I arrived early for my lessons, I observed Dr. Elizabeth with children and talked to some of the students' parents. They all speak highly of her and are very happy with their children's musical development.

I am (also) a music teacher at UC Berkeley, and have seen all kinds of teachers throughout my career and I can confidently say that you can't go wrong with Dr. Elizabeth. I still continue my weekly lessons and am amazed how much I've developed as a violinist since we started working together.

Thank you Dr. Elizabeth, see you next week!

My teaching is a combination of Suzuki Method, ABRSM pieces, and Traditional Method. I used fingering, bowing exercises or etudes for the pieces to make it easier to play.

I am very sincere and sensitive to my students because every student is unique and it is very important that you have to connect with them. I teach by heart and provide what they wanted to achieve in violin playing and so its worth and satisfying.

All of my students will learn how to play well with good intonation and proper posture. Students can choose to play their favorite pieces for fun, either Classical or Pop music . We can also enjoy some duet pieces.

Violin playing is fun but it involves patience, discipline, PRACTICE and determination. Lesson can be held in West Valley Music depending on the studio's room availability. It is very important to schedule the lesson ahead of time.My schedule can be changed but will work out on it.

About Jessica
I am a graduate of Bachelor of Music in Violin Performance at the University of the Philippines. My training started with the Suzuki Method when I was 14 yrs old. As I have progressed, I became a member of different orchestras in the Philippines. I started teaching in 2001 and have attended some Suzuki Music Camps and Violin Suzuki Teacher training workshops. In 2011, I worked in Singapore for almost 3 yrs as full time violin teacher. I teach ABRSM pieces, Pop music, a little bit of music theory and Sight Reading.
