Getting Inspired to Learn Piano in The Gaslamp

Are you a San Diegan looking to learn the piano in or near the Gaslamp District? Taking piano lessons is an excellent way to improve your piano skills, because there’s no better way to learn an instrument than through one-on-one instruction from an experienced music teacher.

That said, an equally important aspect of learning the piano is finding a source of inspiration that will keep you motivated to practice and develop your musical skills. Lucky for you, The Gaslamp is arguably the most happening neighborhood of San Diego, especially when it comes to seeing and hearing live music. By going out and exploring music venues in the area, you’ll be able to find the right inspiration that will keep you motivated to continue your piano lessons in The Gaslamp.

To start, here are a few places to check out:

The Shout House

The number one spot for any aspiring pianist in San Diego is The Shout House. This dueling-piano bar is a great venue to see some truly amazing piano players perform. As a member of the audience, request the most obscure song you know, and it’s quite likely that one or both pianists on the stage will surprise you with an unforgettable cover of it. Lastly, on the wall behind the pianists is a mirror so that you can watch their technique as they play the keys.

The Tin Roof

Once you’ve heard a few tunes at The Shout House, make your way just half a block up to the The Tin Roof, another popular music venue in The Gaslamp. Featuring performers every night of the week, the Tin Roof is a great place to see live performances. There’s also a balcony floor, so even if it’s extra crowded the night that you go, you can still get a good view of the stage.

The House of Blues

The House of Blues is a great venue to hear both up-and-coming and established artists perform in an intimate venue. On Wednesday evenings, the venue also hosts “JammingOut,” an open jam session for musicians of various skill levels to play and learn from one another up on stage. This is a great opportunity to meet with other like-minded musicians and to show off what you’ve been learning in your piano lessons The Gaslamp. To sign up, visit jammingout.net.

The Hard Rock Hotel

If you love classic rock, check out a real hidden musical gem in the lobby of the Hard Rock Hotel on 5th Avenue. Along the back hallway of the lobby is an amazing collection of original lyrics and handwritten letters by musicians such as Paul McCartney and Bob Dylan. There’s even a few psychedelic outfits on display that were once worn by famous artists during their performances. Just being up close and personal with these star-studded items can be a great way to get inspired to continue learning the piano and taking piano lessons in The Gaslamp!

As you’re searching around for events to attend while taking piano lessons in the Gaslamp, know that there are many more venues not featured on this list. Be sure to explore the variety of San Diego bars with live music to stay inspired learning the piano. Best of luck with your lessons, and enjoy the many great live music venues to find in The Gaslamp!
