About Brian
Brian discovered his talent and passion for teaching while still in college, and has been teaching guitar and piano in Southern California for over 20 years. Gifted at teaching students of all ages and abilities, he combines patience, creativity, imagination and boundless enthusiasm with solid professional training and experience. Brian also has over 10 years experience teaching piano and guitar to blind and autistic students.

A lifelong musician, Brian received his first musical training at the age of 4 and 5 years when his actor/singer Dad and musically talented Grandma taught him to sing and play the mandolin. He began piano lessons at age 5, and formal guitar instruction at the age of 10 years.

By the time he was a 14-year-old high school student, Brian was performing as lead guitarist in rock bands around Southern California
, developing mastery of rock guitar and blues performance and improvisation. Brian went on to complete a Bachelor's Degree in Classical Guitar Performance from California State University, Los Angeles.

Passionate about all kinds of music, Brian's studies include choral music and conducting, Gregorian chant (at the Monastery of St. Pierre de Solesmes, France), and Master Classes with Andrés Segovia and Christopher Parkening. In 1984, he participated as a member of the Honor Choir for the ceremonies of the Olympic Games in Los Angeles, which included recording of original music by Philip Glass for the Olympic Games under the direction of David L. Wolper and Mr. Glass.

As a jazz guitarist, Brian continues to grow musically in association with his colleagues of the Naomi Jazz Group, and other close musical friends who include students of the late, great Ted Greene.

MY APPROACH:
I focus on four areas that I think are essential to being a good music teacher:

• the uniqueness of each student;
• the fact that enjoyment (fun!) maximizes learning;
• the importance of proper technique and an understanding of music theory to build self-confidence;
• the development of musicianship through performance.

EACH STUDENT IS UNIQUE:
My first interest with each new student is to discover how he or she learns, and then to apply appropriate teaching techniques to maximize their potential. I gear my lesson plans to the individual and strive to optimize the learning potential of the student.

ENJOYMENT MAXIMIZES LEARNING:
In a lesson with me you can expect to never be bored, to laugh a lot, learn a lot, be positively engaged emotionally and challenged intellectually. I believe that learning is maximized when the student is enjoying the experience, and is faced with challenges appropriate to their skill level. I aim to make learning music fun, choosing musical selections to learn in the style and genre that relate to the student's interests and aspiration.

TECHNIQUE & UNDERSTANDING OF MUSIC THEORY TO BUILD SELF-CONFIDENCE:
When my students perform in concerts, recitals, juries, auditions, recording sessions or simply for friends and family, they have self-confidence because they know precisely the "how" and "why" of everything required to perform well. My goal with students is to build a solid foundation in instrumental technique and thorough understanding of Music Theory at their appropriate level.

PERFORMANCE:
On a monthly basis, all my students practice performing pieces they are working on during the lesson time, with family/friends as an audience if desired and appropriate, and/or using digital recording to help the student develop a critical ear for their own playing.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Music stands, guitar/s and guitar stands, Dynarelle cushion, footrests, Korg 88 fully--weighted digital keyboard, Zoom H4 digital recorder.

As well, I have guitars and equipment both for teaching and performance of various styles, as below. Students will have the opportunity to learn about, play and become familiar with any of these instruments/equipment according to their interests and skill levels.

GUITARS:

CLASSICAL: Ramirez Model 1A Classical (professional concert level instrument)
Cordoba (teaching/practice instrument)
Hohner Acoustic (electric)

ROCK: Fender Stratocaster (pre-CBS)
Shechter Omen6
Shechter Elite Series C1

FOLK: Martin (steel string)
Dobro

JAZZ: Oscar Schmidt by Washburn (hollow body electric)
Gibson SG (electric)

OTHER EQUIPMENT:

AMPS: Fender Twin reverb
Pevey practice amp
Rock amp

Boss GT8 Effects Pedal

*** Travel Equipment ***
Guitar stands, guitar/s, Zoom H4 digital recorder. Generally I do not transport my Korg 88 keyboard to the student's home for lessons, but I can if necessary. However, I do require that piano students have their own piano/keyboard or at least reliable access to one for practice between lessons.

Guitar students should also have their own guitar. I can advise on appropriate instruments and can help students find a suitable guitar for their learning level and price range.

I have approximately taken ten or twelve lessons. I started from scratch, and Brian's input and guidance has helped me to move along pretty fast in my learning. My ear is becoming more selective. My fingers are more and more flexible. My idea of learning piano was to do so, in order to play for me and maybe one or two more people. I've learned with Brian that even if that is the case, I must still handle myself, as if I am going to be part of a band. This is teaching me the importance of counting and keeping the rhythm for me and for others. It basically helps me to have a structure. Thank you Brian

Tyler has been by far the best music teacher I have ever had! he is such a talented, down to earth, genuinley nice guy. He helped Me understand playing guitar (and music in general) so much more than I could have imagined. He always answered all of my beginner questions without making me feel stupid.i am so much more confident and comfortable playing and writing my own music. Tyler gave me the tools I needed to make music. I wish all teachers were like Tyler, I can't recommend him enough for anything music related. You won't be dissapointed!

Claire is a very good teacher. Highly recommended. The pacing of the lessons is both challenging and comfortable. I appreciate her demos and duets with me as these help me to practice listening and anticipate playing with others in the future. I've had six 45-minute lessons so far and I feel I've learned a lot and have improved significantly, but I'm also aware of the areas that need improvement. I look forward to continuing to take lessons with Claire.

About Zoë
**Now accepting piano and voice students for August 2017!**

I love music and teaching so much that when I am in the studio, I never feel like I am at “work”. I am a life long stage performer and recently earned my Masters of Music - Voice Performance from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.
As a private voice and piano teacher and a Kindermusik instructor, I have benefitted greatly from teaching students diverse in age, background, and experience level. I love the excitement of early note and rhythm discovery that comes with teaching young children, and it has been an absolute joy to watch my adult students grow more confident in their ability to express themselves through song. Your lessons are about you and I tailor my approach to meet your specific goals and experience level.

Zoe was a wonderful teacher to my children who took voice and piano, respectively. We will definitely miss working with her, but are excited as she begins a new journey to Los Angeles to develop her music studio. One of the attributes that I appreciated about Zoe's teaching style was her patience and the way she engaged with my children. My youngest child's attention span could be a challenge during lessons. Zoe was professional and patient when she re-directed her. Zoe was also good in complimenting the progress my children made, as well as, giving constructive criticism in a respectful manner and tone that was well received by my children. She always began lessons by checking in with my children and taking an interest in them outside the music lesson forum. She always answered my questions with honesty and integrity. We will also miss her smile and her singing voice, as she was a joy to listen to as she demonstrated techniques during lessons! She is a great teacher and you will be pleased with her work.

Zoe was awesome with our 9 year old daughter! She displays great patience with our daughter, and was extremely motivating for her. Zoe has a strong talent of being able to connect emotionally! She found out what our daughter enjoyed to sing, and then challenged her with some new music as well. We highly recommend Zoe for both her musical talent, but also for her interpersonal skills!

About Maïwenn
Bonjour, my name is Maïwenn. It's a celtic name. I come from France, from Paris, where I grew up. I love playing the harp. Music is one of the most important thing of the life. You can share it and play with other musicians. Music helps to feel better and positive. I love playing different kind of music because music stays music. I'd be very enjoyed to teach you the harp and maybe to help you to learn few words in French. I started to learn the music at the age of 7 years old. I obtained a gold medal for harp and a degree in music studies at the Conservatory. In 2005 I received my first prize for harp and I became the first harpist in the Symphony and Philharmonic Orchestra of the Paris Conservatory. I regurlarly give many concerts with my different bands. I’ve been teaching harp at different levels for many years. I’ve been working with
a lot event planning agencies specialized in weddings in France for an international clientele. In 2006, I form a classical duo. I am very pleased to propose my duet « Sonates en Duo » an unusual alliance between a soprano saxophone and a harp. We record our first album under the name of Sonates en Duo. In 2011, I set up “Twinkel Quintet”, an electro-acoustic experimental jazz band. Twinkel Quintet explores an unlimited repertory where freedom of expression and experimentation are revealed through my compositions and arrangements of jazz standards, original acoustic browsing with stamps and appliances. For me, the Twinkel Quintet represents, above all, a desire to access and develop a musical project based on her instrument, the harp, - an instrument that is little known in this kind of music, and which provides great scope for creativity. Indeed, the music of the Twinkel Quintet is music that is at the crossroads of jazz and contemporary music, full of moods and colors that awaken and challenge our curiosity.
