Very experienced beginner piano teacher! I have over 10 years of experience working with kids and adults on piano and keyboard. My goal is to make sure we do what YOU, the student, want to do. I provide the musical guidelines and push to get you started, but I love being able to collaborate on the music you or your child wants to learn! I have a Bachelors in music from Columbia College Chicago, a thriving arts school in downtown Chicago. I've toured extensively as a singer/songwriter and have written dozens of albums. I now live in Los Angeles and am looking for talented and ambitious new students!

Although this was my first lesson with Brian, he is a perfect match for me. He has a gentle, docile personality, good humored and very patient. He's especially great with beginners, older students and special needs individuals. In close proximity so he didn't have to travel far. His teaching style, for me, is very effective and he's a very nice person.

Brian is the best! Highly encouraging - especially for me as a beginner.

Brian was fantastic and the lesson was fun! Really pumped about my next lesson! I have some things to practice and I already feel like I can play some guitar!!

I enjoy working with most of my students, especially those who practice hard. I find all students unique and they response differently to my requests or questions. I feel that very often I need to react spontaneously to their responses. For the beginners I mainly focus on reading musical notes and learning correct rhythmic values. With beginners who haven’t played the piano at all I teach finger exercises written finger numbers only. Then I use Piano Adventures theory, lesson, technique and artistry, performance, and popular music books. Although Alfred’s and Bastien’s methods are well known, I prefer Piano Adventures because they introduce the coordination of right and left hand in more progressive manner. At the beginning the following will be covered.
• Postures at the piano, finger numbers, high and low on the keyboard
• Music alphabet, Intervals
• Musical form, Dynamic marks
• Staff; line notes, space notes
• Time signature, accent mark, legato, staccato
• Basic chords ...

"My daughter has been taking lessons from Nancy for about 5 months. I have been extremely pleased with how much my daughter has learned and how she is continuing to improve. Nancy is patient but continues to challenge her each week. Nancy also organized a recital for all of her students with a reception afterward. Each student was introduced and had the chance to play several pieces. Everything was professionally done and a nice way for the kids to showcase what they have been learning. I would definitely recommend Nancy as a piano teacher."

"Julie is a conscientious teacher. She taught several of our children the fundamentals of piano - notes, timing, fingering, etc - and gave them a great foundation for their further development. She is patient and kind, qualities that are very needful for helping beginners.
One of the reasons we chose Julie was because we attended church where she was the regular pianist, and we could watch and hear the skills she had to play. We would highly recommend her."

5 Jazz Piano Exercises for Beginners

Do you want to sharpen your jazz piano skills? Below, piano teacher Jason B. shares five jazz piano exercises you can do to bring out your inner jazz pianist... Jazz is one of the few piano styles that allows total creative freedom. Expert jazz pianists reshape not only the rhythms and melody of a song, but they are also given a solo section that allows them to create new melodies on the spot. While this creative freedom is liberating, it also can be overwhelming when you're just sta …
