Mr. Anderson has been a great influence on my life. As a cello teacher, Mr. Anderson has a wealth of knowledge ranging from the making of the cello to the history of composers to just random facts. Mr. Anderson has been my teacher from the 6th grade to my senior year. During those 6 years, he helped me grow into a great cello player that as a senior, I was able to play a solo with my school orchestra as a senior capstone. He, also, understood, that during this time, not only is his job to teach me cello but also to help and guide me into a better person. I have had many great and amazing teachers in high school and college and Mr. Anderson is among the best. I will never forget those 6 years and will fondly look back at these formative years.

Dwight Anderson was a fabulous cello teacher for my son from preschool through high school. He was, in fact, the best music teacher we ever had for either of my children - through all of their piano, violin and cello instruction. He was consistent and nurturing, able to push the boundaries of expectation, and able to inspire. Although he only taught my son, he influenced my daughter as well by encouraging them to both participate in the GDYO. He was masterful in choosing certain pieces of work that inspired my son to practice and to perform. Even though he certainly assigned scales and etudes, he always allowed him at least one piece of his choosing that gave him such a sense of accomplishment. For example, my son learned to play the prelude of the Bach suite in G even before he started the 1st grade. That is still his favorite piece! And, starting around 7th or 8th grade, he let his pick which "big work" they would tackle for the following year. We went through the Lalo cello concerto, Faure's Elegie, the Saint-Saens concerto, Popper's Hungarian Rhapsody, Dvorak's Rondo, and finally, "The Dvorak", for his senior project in high school. Even though my son didn't always learn all the movements of the concerto or learn it to perfection, Dwight's partnership with my son in picking these pieces gave him such a love of playing the cello! What a wonder and a gift!
In the years since high school, Dwight has kept up with my son, even though he chose a non-music career path and a life in the north east. We will be forever grateful for Dwight and the influence he has had on my son in particular, and, for his influence on the whole family for deepening our appreciation of beautiful music. Thank you, Dwight!

Mr. Anderson was very patient with my son who was just starting on the cello. He made sure that my son had a strong foundation before learning harder pieces, and always came to the lessons with a bright smile.

Taking classes with Valentina has been great. She takes the time to explain the material until you understand it. She has a great amount of patience and care for her students. While she mostly has kid students, I am an adult in my 30's and her classes feel at par with a student like me. In other words, she can basically teach anyone the cello. I strongly reccommend Valentina as your next cello teacher!

My 9 yr old daughter began cello lessons with Quinn about 2 weeks before lockdown started. I was worried that online lessons wouldn't work out, but Quinn has been amazing. She's great at explaining everything so that my daughter understands, and she pushes just enough to keep her interested without being overwhelmed. She also answers questions promptly by email when any problems arise. I can't recommend her highly enough!

I’m passionate about music education and I am a full time music teacher and active performer throughout the SE Michigan area. In the summers I teach cello and music improvisation at the Cellochanwoods Cello retreat in Vermont.

Lessons are designed and catered around each student and I believe in a well rounded approach in teaching music. While everyone will learn a solid foundation of note reading and playing technique, lessons also pull from sources such as music theory, ear training, music history, etc.

I hold a Masters in Music Performance from the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, London and a Bachelors in Music Performance from the University of Michigan.

Whether you’re looking to learn a new hobby, or further your musical skills, I’d love to help out. All levels welcome!

Anna is amazing! For the past two years, she has provided individual cello instruction to our 10th grader. She is patient, kind, and easily able to share her knowledge and skills with her students. Under her guidance he has improved his technique and gained valuable experience at his recitals. She has also helped him prepare pieces for his auditions at CCA and SDYS. Highly recommend!
Kevin
Anna is a wonderful teacher. She allows me as a parent (and encourages) to attend lessons so i can be her proxy during the week to reinforce lessons taught; this helps with continuous week to week progress. She demands a lot of my child in terms of warm-ups drills, site reading, rhythm, intonation, and sound. She is rigorous in terms of proper technique, training, and demands playing "beautifully" (with emotion). When things get too tough she takes a step back and gets back to the basics, focusing on advancing through a piece note by note, measure by measure. The end result is fantastic and often get featured in concert performances several times a year. My child has grown tremendously since starting with Ms. Anna; he had a previous teacher and picked up a lot of bad habits that we had to engineer out. He now is playing at a high level as a 10 year old having been with Ms. Anna for ~2 years. He has grown through each piece, taking his time. There is no pressure to move onto new pieces until each piece has been mastered. His maturity, self-confidence and work ethic have all grown because of cello. It has been a tremendous pleasure to learn from Ms. Anna, not to mention see her perform in the San Diego symphony. She is a true professional who understands how to work with kids but also pull the best out of them!

"I have taken several lessons with Mark and I think he is an outstanding cello and music teacher. Mark has a substantial knowledge of cello, music and other instruments and his method of teaching is so great that it has make me feel that even with the crazy busy life that I have I can tackle the cello and I will have a good measure of success at my own pace in the future. He is incredibly patient, encouraging and good natured while totally engaged in getting you further in learning music and the cello in this case. He has sent information every week of relevant material to be covered in the next class which is very helpful and he adapts very well to your own style, whether you want to start playing right away or you prefer more emphasis in music notation, etc. He makes himself easily available to answer any questions or to discuss changes in schedule and to top It off he is a really nice person. I would recommend Mark heartily and enthusiastically to anyone who wants to learn cello of any musical instrument he teaches."

"I am a prominent professional musician in Portland and retired public school music teacher, and have had the opportunity to observe Corey teach on several occasions. Having evaluated several teachers during my career, I can honestly say that Corey is among the finest teachers of elementary school students I have EVER seen. Corey has a rare talent with children, and he teaches music with an easy going style and manner that brings out the best in all of his students--both young and old. Corey is likeable, professional, and easy to work with. I am pleased to give him my highest recommendations with no reservations."

"Corey is the single biggest reason I stuck with music and was eventually accepted to several notable music conservatories including the Bienen School of Music at Northwestern University and Oberlin Conservatory. I began studying with Corey at the age of 9, and he made the entire learning process exciting and engaging. His enthusiasm for music is contagious for students at all levels, and his expertise in guiding his pupils through the extremely complex process of learning a stringed instrument is unparalleled. Corey brings decades of pedagogical and professional experience to each lesson, and is always eager to impart this wisdom on his students. I cannot recommend Corey enough, for students at any level he is the best teacher you will be able to find!"

"A storm had our session a bit laggy, but we overcame that obstacle. Naomi started simple and went over basic foundational aspects such as parts of the instrument, proper posture and body positioning, and tuning.

After that we moved on to intonation on the C major scale. A lot of musical theory was discussed throughout the lesson and she was very good at explaining the concepts. I already highly recommend her, and will continue lessons, so you should start."

Cello Thumb Position: Where to Place Your Fingers & Hands

Cello thumb position is one of the big leaps of technique for advancing cellists and is one of the skills that sets more advanced students from the intermediate. This new technique opens up the higher ranges of the instrument and allows us to play more advanced solos and etudes. This technique is not something you should rush into though! Make sure to take things slowly at first and master the basic concepts before moving on.  When Should You Focus on Your Cello Thumb Position? There have to …

What Does it Take to Become a Professional Cello Player?

Pursuing a career in music is a risky decision, because by the nature of the industry few artists can “make it big.” Most artists aren’t pop stars, or even full-time career musicians, and all musicians also teach to remedy this. There are many paths to becoming a professional cello player, and depending on where you start it might be easy or hard to earn a reputation and start making money. I followed an academic path, studying classical music at university and then continuing my research …

What is the Suzuki Cello Method?

The Suzuki method, founded in 1945 by violinist Shinichi Suzuki as the Talent Education Movement, is one of the most enduring teaching methods, or pedagogies for young string players. Suzuki’s main goal for his music education system was to give students a “noble spirit,” which would instill respect and cooperation through his method. The method was brought to America in the 1960s by John D. Kendall, and today the Suzuki Association of the Americas instructs new teachers and studen …
