Jonathan H.

Torrance, CA

About Jonathan

Hello Students and Parents,

I am a musician currently living in Burbank, California. I have a Bachelors in Music Theory/Composition from Oklahoma Baptist University and a Masters in Music for Film and Television from the Pacific Northwest Film Scoring Program in Seattle, Washington.

I have a fun and laid back personality, I love music and I love teaching music to students of all ages in a way that is fun and informative.

I have played piano and guitar from the age of 6 and began teaching when I was 13. My musical experience has been eclectic having studied a variety of genres includin
g classical, jazz, blues and rock. I also have considerable experience as a composer and songwriter. I have composed numerous pieces for soloists, small ensembles and full orchestra. I have also written over 40 songs in a variety of musical styles.

My goal as a music teacher is to encourage students to have fun with music and to be the best musician they can be.

Thank you for interest in music lessons and I hope to be teaching some of you very soon.

*** Lesson Details ***
I believe that the best environment for learning is one that is fun and relaxed. I enjoy music and have fun playing and teaching it and my hope is that you will have the same experience.

There are several ways to accomplish this goal of a fun, relaxed learning experience. First, there are my responsibilities as a teacher. The most important job I have is to always be encouraging and positive. I have a naturally laid back personality and I promise that I will never raise my voice, talk down to or demean a student in any way. Rather, I always try to build you up through positive reenforcement and compliments. I also try to custom tailor each curriculum based on your specific interests. That way you are playing music you enjoy. At the same time, there are things that I believe are important for every student. For example, I teach all of my students how to read music. This enables you to be well rounded musician and to branch out into a variety of musical disciplines.

In order to have a fun, productive learning experience there are just a few things I ask of you, the student. First, I would ask that you come prepared to every lesson, having practiced the material during the week. Learning to play an instrument is like learning to play a sport. You have to develop muscle memory that can only be built by consistent practice during the week. Particularly for the younger students, this means getting the parents involved and helping them practice each day. If you practice a little each day, you will be amazed at quickly you progress and how much fun you will have in the process.

After a few months of lessons I hope that you will be a proficient sight reader and be able to play the music you enjoy. For those of you learning songwriting, I hope that will have a firm understanding of the principles of writing music and have written several well structured songs. Most of all I hope that you will have a continuing passion for music and a desire to continue to learn and have fun.

*** Travel Equipment ***
With Guitar teaching, They will need to have a guitar and two chairs. I can provide the music stand. With Piano, they will obviously need to have a piano.

*** Specialties ***
I try to be as versatile a musician as possible and can therefore teach a wide variety of styles and genres depending on the interests of the student

Great teacher

I am an adult beginner and have been taking piano lessons with Jonathan for 2 months. Jonathon is an excellent teacher. He gives very good direction and explains things very clearly. He is also very good at identifying weak areas that require extra work. The lessons are relaxed, stress free, and fun. I highly recommend Jonathan.

About Ryan

Hello,

I am a music teacher, multi-instrumentalist, and songwriter. My passion is music and I absolutely love teaching. I have over ten years experience teaching music in all different types of settings to all different age groups, but my favorite is one-on-one time with a beginner who is excited to learn.

I love inspiring music in others and with my time away from performing, I am passionate about teaching. I specialize in performing and teaching musical styles that include pop, rock, jazz, funk, and classical. I appreciate and teach all levels of music theory and music performance.

I graduated from the Herb Alpert school of music at UCLA where I obtained a degree in jazz performance with a minor in music education.

My love and appreciation of music is where my focus as a teacher stems from; I believe in developing a student’s musical abilities and helping them be the best they can be. I hope to instill a love for music in each student I teach. Everyone is different and learns differently so I tailor a lesson plan specifically for each student that gets the best results with the most amount of fun.

*** Lesson Details ***
I am a fun and friendly instructor. Pop, rock, jazz, funk or classical. In my lessons we play what YOU want!

I love teaching beginners, helping both inspire a love of music and building a solid musical foundation so you can make all your playing dreams come true.

I will get you up and playing fast and focus on whatever style of music YOU are interested in!

We'll work together and learn songs you want to play and build a strong musical foundation in: instrumental technique, music reading, and music theory.

All my lessons are individually tailored to my students, even though we'll use books.

I love music and always have so much fun teaching. I am a laid back instructor, and the lessons can be as serious or relaxed as you are comfortable with.

*(Repeated from my bio section)

Ryan knows his stuff, great teacher!

I'd highly recommend Ryan if you are looking for a very knowledgeable, easy going and talented teacher to help with your bass playing. I starting taking lessons because I wanted to advance past a beginner level and I just couldn't do it by myself.

His lessons helped me learn different techniques and theory, but also in a relateable way that was easier to understand, which helped me learn quicker. I'm sure any level of player could benefit from having him as a teacher. Thanks man, keep up the good work.

Stefani S.

Hermosa Beach, CA

About Stefani

Stefani's musical talents were first observed at the age of 5, when she began private study of piano and music theory. She played the alto saxophone for a brief period of 4 years during junior high and early high school, but then moved on to join the school choir at age 16. This choice led to the unexpected discovery of a beautiful, powerful voice. Stefani earned a Bachelor of Arts in Musical Theatre at the University of Tulsa, with special studies in jazz vocals, ear training, and theory. Her college career provided her with intense studies in the vocal styles of Musical Theatre, Classica
l, and Jazz. She performed in many musicals, plays, and recitals at TU, and during each summer, she worked as a cast member of Light Opera Oklahoma. She was a featured vocalist with the TU Jazz Combo and Big Band, and she performed at the Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame. She gained her first studio experience her senior year at TU when she recorded a full-length jazz album.

All throughout college, her plan was to move to New York City and become a Broadway performer, but right before graduation, she had a change of heart and chose Los Angeles instead. Since her arrival, she has discovered her hidden talent of songwriting and also ventured into home recording. She has performed as a solo artist at venues all around LA and surrounding areas, including The Viper Room, The Mint, Genghis Cohen, Cafe Cordiale, B.B. King's, and House of Blues on Sunset.

Stefani possesses a strong desire to share her musical knowledge with others, and she enjoys teaching a wide range of musical styles. Throughout many years of private vocal study, her teachers have commended her strong skills of observation and adaptation, and they have always told her she would make an excellent teacher. Stefani tailors her lessons to fit each individual's needs, and she strives to help each of her students gain confidence and reach their own personal goals.

*** Lesson Details ***
I am a very upbeat person, and I create a positive environment in which my students feel comfortable to open up and stretch themselves to reach their full potential. I believe that hard work and discipline will help you to achieve your goals, but I also recognize the importance of having fun and celebrating the art of creating music! I tailor my lessons to each student's individual needs.

For Singing, I focus on breathing, intonation, and control, which provide the foundation for great singing technique. I teach a wide range of music genres, including musical theatre, opera, jazz, pop, soul, rock, and country. I emphasize feeling the emotion of each song and translating that emotion through the voice. I also teach performance and recording techniques. I have my students study both classical and contemporary music.

For Piano, I focus on finger strength and dexterity, reading music, and the basics of music theory.

For Speaking Voice, I utilize the Linklater technique to free, develop and strengthen the voice. A large part of this process centers around freeing the body from unnecessary (and often unrecognized) tension, in order to liberate the natural voice. I also focus on breathing and articulation. These lessons are highly recommended for actors.

*** Studio Equipment ***

*** Specialties ***

Blues Guitar · Online
I have been taking lessons with Stuart for over a year and have significantly improved my playing with his online classes. Guitar is a hobby for me, but I am passionate about it. I took online lessons at Berklee Online, earned a guitar certificate, but at times felt overwhelmed with the amount of material presented each week. At the end of the program, I still didn't feel like I could play very well. After meeting Stuart, he very quickly helped me focus on what is important and how to get the most out of my practice / playing. He has an in depth knowledge of guitar theory and understands how to apply relevant theory in everyday practical playing. Whether you want to study blues, reggae, slide guitar, Stuart will help you become a much better guitar player. I highly recommend Stuart for online lessons.
