I graduated from Portland State University with a major in Applied Linguistics and a minor in French. My curious nature led me from my idyllic hometown (Silverton) to live at various times in New York City, San Francisco, Germany, France and China. Through teaching abroad, I was not only able to wend my way into personally enriching experiences, but to be of service. I ultimately found that service to be more satisfying than globetrotting. I believe that analogy is the driver of cognition. This means that, as a teacher, my job is primarily to orient abilities that the student has already accrued towards new skills in a way that is personally salient for him or her. The most satisfaction I get as a teacher is when I see that my student has incorporated the skill that I was hired to impart, and I have been made obsolete. The majority of my free time is spent chasing my son, but I sometimes have time to play board games, or binge watch shows with my wife.

    Experience

    English Teacher

    Aug, 2010 - Aug, 2011

Mingshi English (Fushun, Liaoning Province, PRC)

At Mingshi English, I worked primarily in public schools working from set curricula. I worked in every level of K-8 with class sizes from between 35 and 120 students. On weekends I also worked in private schools with K-12 students using various curricula, the class sizes being between 3 and 20 students. One evening a week I taught adults, at various levels of proficiency all in the same class. For this class I created my own lessons.

Subject Expert (French & K-8) / Test Prep Tutor (SAT, ACT and HSEEs)

    Jul, 2017 - Dec, 2017

    AJ Tutoring

At AJ Tutoring, in the heart of Silicon Valley, I was a subject matter expert for French. I tutored French for students from some of the best public high schools in the US, and several Elite private schools. I worked with students of many levels of competence, working from a plethora of textbooks. I also did test prep for the ACT, SAT, PSAT and several High School Entrance Exams (every level of ISEE, SSAT and HSPT). I also taught K-8 subjects and helped create lessons for the English department.

    French Tutor

    Sep, 2013 - Jun, 2014

    Chemeketa Community College

At Chemeketa, after taking my first official French classes (FR202 and FR 203 - I had studied French on my own and lived there as a farmer in 2009) I was hired to tutor by the French department head to tutor FR101 through FR203. As a tutor, I worked to demystify the grammatical jargon that put students off. I also worked as a conversation partner and put on workshops. I returned to China in June of 2014 for a working vacation then moved to Portland to continue at PSU in 2015.

    English Teacher/Curricula Designer

    May, 2012 - Oct, 2012

Horson Education (Shenyang, Liaoning Province, PRC)

At Horson, I was able to start working on a coherent curriculum, designed for college students who were preparing to study abroad. I also taught at the Shenyang Foreign Language High School, which was a sort of language teaching lab. Invigorated by the experience, I decided to go to college in the states to study Linguistics.

    Aug, 2011 - Sep, 2014

Sunbo Foreign Language School (Shenyang, Liaoning Province, PRC)

At Sunbo I worked almost exclusively in a private language school setting. The clientele were mostly young professionals looking to improve their English to get ahead at work, or college students with a few spare hours a week to study. For the most part, I worked from lessons that I developed myself. I was able to test each lesson on multiple classes, which helped me to start seeing trends that were positive or negative through several classes. I began incorporating ideas that I was learning from the linguistics books that I studied in my free time.
