My lessons would generally be broken into parts to maximize concentration.

1. Student talks about a previously assigned topic using prepared material. I would listen, ask questions about contents, and make notes on language problems. Then I would explain problem areas and conduct focused drills.

2. Depending on the student’s level, progress and goals, I will introduce a language point to introduce and practice. It may be the vocabulary for a given topic or a few useful grammatical expressions.

3. If these exercises suggest a topic for the next lesson, we would talk about it in general terms, ideally checking where the student needs to work in order to discuss the topic. Of course the topic and the language will depend on the students and events of the day. The student will prepare to talk about the topic next time.

About Timothy B.

Hi! I’m Tim, and I’m a language teacher.

I live in Oklahoma, but I love traveling. I have traveled, studied and worked all around the world, so I know how valuable it is to speak another language. That’s especially true this year when we can’t actually travel. Learning a language allows us to travel in our minds, and living so much of our lives online allows us to create a global community without leaving home.

I have spent most of my career teaching English in Japan, but I have also taught in the United Staes, both ESL and foreign languages. I have taught Japanese, French and Spanish., and I have worked in universities, companies, hospitals and in private lessons. I can help you prepare for meetings or interviews, or I can help with your schoolwork.

In my day job, I work at a community college. I tutor students in a learning center that focuses on students who have overcome disadvantages to go to college. Their determination is a real inspiration for me. It’s proof that learning is an active process that requires a long-term commitment. I tutor all subjects, but my first love is foreign language learning. That’s why I want to help you through TakeLessons.

Since I became a teacher, I took on the project of traveling around the world for intensive language programs. In addition to several courses throughout Latin America and a college program in Paris, I have studied in Korea, Taiwan, Indonesia, Greece, Portugal and Ireland. On top of that, I have organized both inbound and outbound study-abroad programs for my students in Japan. So I know what’s involved in a successful short-term intensive program. That’s hard to do in these troubled times, but I am putting together virtual intensive courses for my students. Look out for special intensive course offerings during college breaks!

I look forward to sharing the excitement of opening up your world to new ways to communicate.
