I'm enthusiastic about teaching and sharing different culture to my students. Growing up in Asian culture makes me capable of telling the difference between western and eastern life styles. With more than 13 years of teaching experience, I have very solid teaching background and discover the easiest way of learning a new language by logic and constant practice. I enjoy creating different situations and encouraging students to think and talk. I'm sure you'll have fun and find it interesting to dig deeper more about the language and culture. I teach both traditional Chinese and simplified Chinese according to student's need as some people prefer one or another. Not only would I go through the content in the textbook but also give different practices on certain occasions like holidays or events. I make sure you'd get all the details clearly for every class before moving on.

Sonia is an excellent teacher! I am so glad that I was lucky and I booked her instead of many other options. She is very student-focused. She understands what your goals are, respects them, and designs the courses around that. She starts each class with a review, which really helps me. I have a full-time job and a lot of other things going on, so the fact that she herself does reviews makes me retain more information. We are progressing really fast. If I tell her that I studied something on my own, she does not waste time re-teaching that. She is INCREDIBLY responsive. She will respond to me even on the weekends if I have a question even when she absolutely does not have to. She creates and shares worksheets with me, even when she does not have to. One time she corrected my worksheet in 8 minutes on a Saturday even when she did not need to do all this extra work this fast. She just really cares. She cares about teaching, cares about the language, cares about culture, and cares about her students. She is also really funny! I always look forward to my lessons with her. You will not be disappointed. She is the best.
I agree with a previous review; Sonia meets you where you’re at and gives you confidence. She goes above and beyond to assist you with accomplishing whatever goal you have, whether it be to pass a language proficiency test or learning for fun. Due to where she was born, Sonia is also able to give cultural context and she teaches examples of how language is used familiarly vs respectfully in every lesson. I have found it easy to build a rapport in under 5 lessons and look forward to working with her long term. . I definitely recommend Taking Chinese Lessons with Sonia! During the first lesson she goes over her recommendations for a textbook. As she moves along, she provides other free resources that help with pronunciation and memorization. I try to meet with Sonia the same day and time consecutively, which I recommend you do. Sonia is flexible too, she was able to switch the start time and day for me with just a text when the original time became inconvenient for me.
Sonia meets you where you're at and builds on your vocabulary to get you to a solid foundation. Gives you not just word translation, but how that word was made, really breaks it down for you. It really makes you remember. Gives you situational examples and relevant cultural information. She's super flexible and is so personable, such a warm personality. I felt comfortable to make mistakes and I left feeling capable and confident. I wouldn't be able to make as much progress as I did without her.
