BA in Linguistics, minor in Spanish
Spanish Lessons: linguist with passion for Spanish
I learned Spanish in Baja California, Mexico, where I lived for nearly 10 years as a child and young person. Now, I have been studying it and speaking it for over 22 years. I have a degree in Linguistics with a minor in Spanish from San Diego State University, Ca. I'm a native English speaker, but due to my linguistics background I have a solid foundation in syntax (grammar), phonology (sound systems), and semantics (different word meanings) that can be applied to any language. I've taught English as a Foreign Language in Mexico to students ranging in age from beginning preschool classes to advanced High School and SAT prep courses, and I can apply the same principles to teach Spanish as a Foreign Language. I believe the best way to learn a language when not living in that language's country of origin is exposure to the culture, music, and language communities associated with it. Luckily, there are many native Spanish speakers in the greater Madison area now, providing more opportunity for exposure to the native speaker community.
Lessons in Spanish with me will involve:
* memorization of key phrases through listening to pop songs including the phrases
* age-appropriate media may be assigned in the form of youtube videos, magazines, books, or other materials
* educational games in Spanish
* conversational practice with myself in lessons
Whatever your starting level or goals with Spanish, I love language learning and I'm excited to share my enthusiasm for it.
Language learning is superrrrrr fun! (We'll address rolling the r's, don't worry)

My background is in Suzuki piano. I started playing when I was 7, and have now been studying the instrument for over 25 years. I completed Certificate of Merit coursework and passed tests up to level 5 in California (equivalent to a BA in Music Theory). I adhere to the Suzuki Method while teaching, emphasizing ear training, music theory, and proper technique. I believe students interested in all genres of piano can benefit from a solid grounding in classical principles. Suzuki theory encourages students to begin at as early an age as possible, and I have extensive experience with young children. Beginners of all ages are, of course, welcomed and encouraged!
