English with Safa Jon S.

I am currently enrolled in a joint university program between Universitat Politecnica de Valencia in Spain and George Mason University in Fairfax, VA. I study Biopsychology and 'Literatura Castellano' (Spanish literature), on a track to enter medicine. I have been teaching English and biological sciences since 2016, working at various youth centers to benefit underprivileged communities. However, approximately 2 years ago, I started hosting private breakaway sessions for students that needed a little bit of extra help. This is where my group teaching method all began. Most recently, I was teaching a family of 3 Spaniard children (ages: 8, 10, & 12) communication skills in English. They started at almost no speaking ability, and after 2 months of weekly lessons, they were watching movies in English and producing quality commentary and analysis of the plot. I also worked at the American Space in Valencia, to teach the English language to Romani children whose schools did not have the resources to instruct in English. Here, I worked closely with 2 teachers, to take the lessons that they wanted the students to learn and transform them to English. I have most extensively worked with children and teenagers, and that is my area of expertise. However, I have also had older students who had greatly improved their grasp on the language through our lessons. Something that I have found works really well with adults, are the weekly group call sessions we have, so that students can converse naturally, and get helpful tips on how to improve.
