English (ESL) with Monica P.

Hello, I am Monica! I'm a native English speaker and I am currently a Graduate Student pursuing my Master's Degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. I am TEFL Certified (Teaching English as a Foreign Language), and currently pursuing a Graduate Certificate in CALL (Computer Assisted Language Learning). I have my undergraduate in Finance. I have also been teaching and assisting in English instruction for the past year and a half at Arizona State University. I currently have two important roles at the university: I am a Language Assistant and an Education Specialist. As a Language Assistant, my responsibilities include: -Providing feedback and encouragement to students curious about their progression with the English language, help students with things such as brainstorming topics for presentations, providing speaking tips for pronunciation by demonstrating how words are spoken. -In-class assistance with tasks, activities, events, and instruction. -Engaging students in the language learning process by encouraging interaction and dialogue between learners or one-on-one while assisting with sentence structure and overall corrections necessary to achieve native fluency. As an Education Specialist my duties include: -Classroom instruction when instructor is not able to be present. Provide lesson plans and instruction in the 4-skills of English: reading, writing, speaking, and listening. -Providing one-on-one tutoring to help student in their studies, identify the areas they need to most help in and focus on building their confidence and skill set. As an English instructor, I take my role very seriously because I know that I can have a big impact on a student’s learning outcome. My approach is understanding the student’s goals and creating a path to help the student achieve their goals in a fun and interesting way. I enjoy creating an environment with the student that encourages them to speak as much as they can without feeling embarrassed or shy. I speak 2 other languages and I understanding the language learning process and what methods help people to acquire the language quickly and effectively. I have experience working with English language learners online for over 3 years. I have taught in both online classrooms with anywhere between 6-8 students at once and given online lessons to individuals as well. I recognize the importance English has on people's lives and I love being a part of the process!
