Although Karen was my High School Dance Teacher, she also helped me after school with my other classes, especially those related to any Writing assignments. She first started tutoring me when I was a Sophomore. I confided in her that I was having a hard time in my English class, and so she offered to stay after school and help me with my assignments. Through her tutoring me my grades improved in English class. She continued to help me for the next few years even through my Senior English class. Karen is an incredibly caring teacher/tutor that cares about other people’s learning. She is patient. She encouraged me a lot. Even when she told me the areas where I needed improvement, she was supportive and nice. Now that I am going to start Pima College pretty soon, I’m definitely going to hire her again as my English tutor to help me do well in college English classes. I would highly recommend Karen as a Writing/Reading Tutor for anyone who needs to improve in these areas.

Taking dance lessons with Karen has been incredibly fun. I've been getting at least one lesson each week for about a year now. So far I have learned Two-Step, Merengue, Salsa, and Bachata. It is also helping me to balance out my arthritis and blood pressure. SInce taking dance lessons, my doctor has told me that my blood pressure has gone down. Now that I'm dancing regularly, I am having less flare ups with my arthritis too. Karen is a very nice and supportive dance instructor. She makes learning enjoyable. I would recommend her to anyone interested in learning to dance.

Karen first became my Writing Tutor when I was in High School. Although I excelled in Math and Science, my Writing skills needed improvement. Karen is a great tutor. She is patient and builds you up by first pointing out what you are doing well, before offering any corrective feedback. Her supportive nature helped me gain confidence in my Writing as I got better over time. After I graduated from High School and entered college, I hired her again to help me with my English 101 and 102 classes, and again she was of great help to me. She provides you with detailed feedback so you know where you need to concentrate on improving your writing. She cares about your progress. I highly recommend hiring her if you need a Writing tutor.

    Experience

    Elementary/High School Teacher/Professional Dance Instructor

    Sep, 2012 - Present

    TUSD/ Self-Employed as a Dance Instructor

I have 5 years experience teaching in Public school. Wherein during this time I taught at both the Elementary and High School grade level. As an Elementary teacher I taught 2nd & 3rd grade English Language Learner students. I loved working on Language Arts: Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking skills with these kiddos. Teaching them the English Language was very rewarding. While in this position I also tutored several of my students in after-school programs as well. I provided them with extra support in Reading and Writing. In regard to reading I used a Whole-Language approach which often involved a combination of teaching kids to use context clues as well as the rest of the words in a sentence to decipher an unfamiliar word, decoding skills, and some phonics. I also helped students develop Reading comprehension skills, such as pausing after every paragraph or two to ask themselves critical thinking questions, or two summarize the key points, and main idea about what they just read. We also used creative visual strategies for Reading comprehension too. For example, Pause- Reflect-and Draw a little sketch of the images that came to their mind of what was happening as they were reading to appeal to Visual and Kinesthetic learning styles. I loved working at this school with these students. The only reason I didn't continue in this position is because the leadership of the school changed after I was there for 2 years. After they hired a new principle I decided to take another position, because it seemed like the culture of the school changed with the new Leadership. I also taught High School Dance for a year and a half. The students were great and I enjoyed it a great deal. In fact, many of my former students from this school have stayed in touch with me and became dance students again when I went back to teaching dance at a private studio. In addition to teaching in Public school, I have also been a Dance instructor in private studios for many of years. I actually have over 20 + years experience. I started working in a Ballroom Studio at the age of nineteen. And even all through the years I taught in Public school, I have simultaneously always continued to teach Dance lessons on an appointment basis. In this area of the Performing Arts, I teach Ballroom/Swing/Country/Latin (salsa, bachata, cumbia etc.) styles of Dance. I can design wedding choreography, or a routine for other types of dance performances such as a Dance recital or competition.
