Roseburg Public Schools

I tutored several first and second year students in Spanish afterschool while I was taking third year Spanish. Additionally, the teacher would occasionally ask high-achieving 3rd and 4th year students to assist with teaching while he was out, due to a lack of Spanish speaking substitutes. Doing this required creating an approved lesson plan and teaching several classes throughout the week. This position repeated several times through the school year.

Portland State University

I worked with a variety of professors to assist in administering courses, ranging in content from sociological theory to topical courses, such as classes teaching about death and dying, marriage and family, and gender, racial, and socioeconomic inequalities. I graded homework and tests, assisted in curriculum development, and served as an intermediary between professors and students.

University of Oregon

I was one of the instructors for the first-year German sequence at the University of Oregon. I helped beginners achieve up to B1 fluency in one year. I used a variety of teaching approaches and tools, including games, music, and media. I also taught part an intensive summer sequence intended to propel students through one year of language learning in 3 months.

As part of obtaining my certification in Second Language Acquisition and Teaching (SLAT), I was an intern at a local elementary school. I took preparatory courses in linguistics, pedagogy, and German. I worked with a co-instructor to create a curriculum for a kindergarten class. We utilized music, dance, and play to help students develop their language skills. By the end of the course, the students knew the German alphabet, German numbers, could talk about weather, animals, and colors and could introduce themselves in German.

Co-Op Family Center

I began work as a Teacher Aide in a local childcare co-op and was promoted to Teacher Assistant after completing training hours through community education and college courses. I worked primarily with ages 2-4. Our curriculum was based on Reggio Emilia philosophies. Student-directed learning was at the center of our practices. We facilitated children as they discovered their own interests such as nature or music.

Roseburg Public Schools

I worked 1-on-1 with a first grade student who had just moved from Germany. I assisted in translating homework from English to German and vice versa. I helped the student communicate with his teacher and peers via live interpretation of German to English and English to German.

German-American Partnership Program

During the summer after my high school graduation, I participated in the German American Partnership Program with 17 other students from Roseburg High School and two teachers who acted as chaperones through the trip. I stayed with a host family and attended school in Lüneburg with my host sister and the rest of the students on the trip. Outside of attending school, we went on cultural adventures to museums, historical locations, and population centers across Germany.

Private Family

I worked as an English as a Second Language tutor for one third grader and one kindergartener. I helped the students understand the assignments with a special emphasis on transposing Common Core math problems into simpler terms. I also assisted the parents in communicating with teachers and school administration.

AFS Intercultural Programs

During my sophomore year of high school, I began an application for AFS to study abroad during my junior year of high school. I left in January and lived with a host family for 6 months. Along with learning German and the Austrian culture, I also learned about where the other students had come from and what their home lives were like. I lived in a small town in Austria and my host family introduced me to the local traditions and unique style of rural Austria. I also volunteered for our local AFS chapter upon returning home.

The National German Honor Society, Delta Phi Alpha, seeks to recognize excellence in the study of German and to provide an incentive for higher scholarship. The Society aims to promote the study of the German language, literature and civilization and endeavors to emphasize those aspects of German life and culture which are of universal value and which contribute to man's eternal search for peace and truth.

Alpha Kappa Delta seeks to acknowledge and promote excellence in scholarship in the study of sociology, the research of social problems, and such other social and intellectual activities as will lead to improvement in the human condition.
