I studied jazz trumpet performance at Oberlin Conservatory (Bachelors, '02) and The Juilliard School (Masters '17). I studied Mandarin Chinese at Oberlin College (Bachelors, '02). I lived and worked in Shanghai, China, from 2003 to 2010. I've been teaching music and language lessons for over 15 years and love to help people grow.
Whether you are starting from scratch or have some experience, I can help you get to the next level by giving you specific, methodical steps to work on and practice. I do my best to give students just the right amount of material to practice and study between each lesson, so that they stay motivated while feeling the right level of challenge and consistent improvement.

Fantastic trumpet instructor. JQ is patient, receptive, encouraging—the list goes on. He's helped me go from literally not being able to make a decent note to playing a little shindig on New Year's for my family. Highly recommended. I'm still taking lessons!Show More
I found that J.Q. was a quality tutor. He adapted to what I needed to focus on for Mandarin, which was tones, and as such I was able to improve my foundation. He also has a good knowledge of the language apart from just being fluent, and could answer any question I had. I definitely recommend him.Show More

I make language learning fun and effective, using established techniques for effective and rapid language acquisition. I prefer to teach speaking and listening together with reading and writing, but some students prefer only to learn to speak, which is also fine. It can be faster to get up and running with conversations, but with less deep an understanding of the language.
As a native English speaker who lived in mainland China for over 8 years, I have the unique ability to explain pronunciation and other issues clearly from a foreigner's perspective. I can help you understand quickly and easily how to form the sounds we don't have in English, as well as visualize the tone systems that are characteristic of Mandarin Chinese.
Have performed all kinds of music with a number of groups in a wide range of styles. Among them are salsa, classical, big band swing, funk, reggae, flamenco, and Latin jazz. Have self-produced two jazz albums of original music as bandleader: Airports (2010) and Tales of Enchantment (2014).
