Latin with James C.

I am a seasoned Latin tutor who has more than 15 years of experience combined studying and teaching the language. I started taking Latin when I was in middle school, and I continued with it throughout college while attending Denison University where I became a faculty-recommended tutor. Since graduating, I have helped students of all ages and learning abilities improve their Latin skills. What has made me such an effective tutor is a specialized method I have devised called the “puzzle strategy”. I encourage students to 'dissect' a sentence (i.e. identify and isolate different parts of speech), which helps explain the relationship between each word. Once all the parts of speech have been accounted for, then it’s much easier to translate the sentence with a firm grasp on each word’s function, just like putting together a puzzle once you have the key end pieces. This method also helps eliminate “word jumble”—translating the word as is instead of understanding how or why. Currently, I tutor students in person from some of the top schools in New York City such as Stuyvesant High School, Regis High School, Trinity School, and Bard High School Early College. I have also tutored many students online from around the country. When I am not tutoring, I am usually cooking, watching sports, or reading the news.
