Experience
Artistic Director & CEO
Jul, 2014 - PresentCastleton Festival / Castleton in Performance
Castleton in Performance (CiP) was the prelude to what would eventually become the Castleton Festival. Originally operating under the umbrella of the Châteauville Foundation, CiP began on June 21, 1997, when the late Maestro Lorin Maazel inaugurated the Theatre House on Castleton Farms (a former chicken coop for 15,000 hens converted to a “mini-Globe” European-style pocket theatre with unparalleled acoustics) together with his renowned friends: cellist Mstislav Rostropovich and pianist Yefim Bronfman. Since then, CiP has given audiences in Rappahannock County a once-in-a-lifetime multicultural experience of the highest caliber. This thematically diverse series of recitals, chamber music, jazz, world music, theatre, opera, and dance brings internationally acclaimed artists into our own backyard in the foothills of the rolling Blue Ridge Mountains. Eminent artists have included Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, José Carreras, Itzhak Perlman, Emanuel Ax, Sir James Galway, the Paris Piano Trio, Carter Brey & Christopher O’Riley, Mariachi Los Camperos Group, Chinese traditional soloists Wu Man and Ma Xiaohui, classical guitarists Pepe Romero and Berta Rojas, modern and Indian dance companies, and famous actors such as Alec Baldwin and Claire Bloom. Following these successes, Maestro Maazel and his wife established the Castleton Festival, a combination of music festival and summer academy for young artists. During this period Dietlinde Turban Maazel developed a unique and wildly popular acting training studio for opera singers. Ranked by the New York Times as among the top 10 festivals in the country, the Castleton Festival endured for seven extraordinary years, culminating in the summer of 2015 and capped by an educational partnership with Wynton Marsalis, his Summer Jazz Academy and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra.
Lecturer - Acting for Singers
Sep, 2013 - PresentRutgers University - Mason Gross School of the Arts
Developed exclusively for Opera singers and voice students, this class focuses on creating a new Mind-Body connection to yourself, your character and your voice. Utilizing fundamental acting principles, body language exercises and improvisation (including singing improv with piano accompaniment and monologue work), the workshop will concentrate on each performer’s unique potential as a singer-actor while striving to develop the physical, vocal, emotional, and intellectual skills that enable the performer to work freely, joyfully and convincingly, also in a foreign language.
Vice President
Jun, 1997 - PresentChateauville Foundation
The Châteauville Foundation was established at Castleton Farms in Rappahannock County, VA in 1997 by Lorin and Dietlinde Maazel. The Foundation’s mission is to nurture young artists, foster collaborative artistic enterprise and create opportunities within the community for shared cultural experience. The private, state-of-the-art Theatre House is the focal point of the Foundation’s activities, and home to its most far-reaching programs. Through the foundation Mrs. Maazel developed a pilot educational project designed to explore new ways of integrating vital artistic and aesthetic values into school curricula, inspired by Rudolf Steiner.
