I've been cross stitching since 1983 and teaching it for over 10 years. Within the first few lessons, you'll learn how to organize your material for easier sewing, master basic stitches, and as time goes on you'll be able to tackle complicated stitches and designs. I specialize in counted cross stitch, but also have experience with redwork, drawnwork, Bargello, pulled thread, hardanger, and canvaswork. Typically, I use The Cross Stitcher's Bible by Jane Greenoff but can recommend other helpful resources. I love working with students of all ages and experience levels and I can't wait to meet you!
About Dawn Z.
High school librarian by day, crafter for life. I'm an award winning embroider, quilter and knitter. I advise a high school sewing club as well as volunteer with Days for Girls and church prayer shawl ministry. Please note, during the summers my schedule is more flexible when school is not in session.
Students will find I'm passionate about all needle arts and want to pass that along to all generations and skill levels.
Learning to sew, knit or hand embroider can be intimidating, but with the right support can become a lifelong hobby that provides joy to your life. Let me show you how to get started.
I look forward to helping you exercise your creative side.

I’m really enjoying my lessons with Dawn, she’s a great teacher and very patient with me. She explains things in an easy way to comprehend. Dawn is also very knowledgeable about teaching on Zoom and makes sure I can see what she’s explaining, switching camera views with ease. I’m so glad I signed up for these sewing lessons!

I loved It and can’t wait to learn!

My first lesson was super exciting!! I have zero knowledge about sewing machines. Dawn went over the parts and was very patient with me. I’m really looking forward to learning how to master this new skill!!

Dawn is so patient. She is starting from the VERY beginning with my daughter and we couldn't be happier.

My daughter (11) and I just had our first lesson with Dawn and it was VERY good. I was not sure how the online aspect would work but it was super easy. She gave us homework to do this week and we can wait for our next lesson!

I was so excited for my first lesson with Dawn ! She showed me everything step by step with so much patience and so much attention . She is so nice and so smiling! I can’t wait to take my next embroidery lesson !

Dawn is a great teacher. She's taught me how the sewing machine works. Knowing how to use a machine is better than being 'stuck' sewing by hand [never took home-ec!] As I said, she's great!

She is very pleasant and she has a lot of patience. I will like to continue my seasons with her.

It was apparent that Dawn understands how to teach using video conference technology and the best visual technique to ensure I could see every step. I really believe I received the best one on one teaching experience.

Dawn was very patient and friendly, which was much appreciated!

It's like you've got an instructor right by your side! 😄
At first, I was unsure of how online sewing lessons would work out, but if I had the opportunity again, I would definitely sign-up with lessons from Ms. Dawn,
especially if your looking for thorough, well-explained lessons then I would encourage you to sign-up. With the skills that I've learned during these past few weeks, I can now see great improvement in my sewing and it's all thanks to the time and effort put forth by her dedicated instruction. Thank you for reading, and happy sewing!!

I had a very positive first experience with sewing lessons and am very excited to continue learning from Dawn. She’s extremely knowledgeable and very friendly!

Dawn was giving embroidery lessons to my 10 yr old daughter over summer. Every week, over the course of 8 weeks my daughter worked on a new project or new stitch. Dawn was very patient with her and my daughter enjoyed the lessons a lot. Dawn got her so much interested that she diligently finished her homework and was always looking forward to her next class.

Amazing teacher! Takes the time to explain everything , very kind and patient

Dawn is very patient with us in our classes and gives very clear instructions to make us become better at it. She also comes up with new fun ideas for us to do for a sewing project. With her help, you can practically make anything

Patient, fun, detail and solution oriented. The lessons are for our 15 year old daughter who is completely engaged in each lesson.

Wonderful person and great teacher!! Very experienced sewer and very good at explaining how to do different sewing methods to my daughter. Highly recommend!

I loved having dawn as an instructor. She had no quit in her even when I did! She knows an amazing amount about the craft. Glad to have her as a teacher.

Dawn was wonderful! She's an excellent teacher: knowledgeable, a clear and concise communicator, and a lovely person. I learned a lot and had a good time.

I just had my first lesson and I'm SO happy that I found Dawn. She's GREAT!!!
To be honest, I was a little afraid to book lessons online with all the scammers out there. But she is wonderful and I know I'm going to want more lessons with her. I could finally make the sewing project I want to make knowing that I have her there for assistance. Thank you SO much Dawn!! I'm looking forward to our next class.

Dawn is the best! She has a lifetime of knowledge, so every lesson is jam packed with learning.

We've had Dawn teach a variety of classes at the Simsbury Public Library (CT). Our most popular is the arm knitting class we open to Teens & Adults. Everyone gets to take home an infinity scarf and they all leave learning a new skill. Dawn works well with all ages, is patient, and really enthusiastic about teaching what she loves. We can't wait to have Dawn back to teach more classes this Fall!

Dawn is an amazing sewing instructor. She taught my 8 year old daughter to sew her first quilt, which later won first prize at the Terryville Fair. Dawn is punctual, energetic, and patient. My daughter enjoyed every lesson and learned the fundamentals of sewing, cutting, and following patterns. Lessons were effective and fun.
