Update: Due to a number of factors, I am returning to full-time work starting October 18, 2016. I really love tutoring, but from that date on I will only be available on Sundays for new students. My passion is learning and teaching languages. My first decade of teaching was mostly dedicated to English as a Second Language/ English as a Foreign Language (which I did while I lived in Spain for seven years). My second decade teaching was as a Spanish teacher, mostly in a public high school in Spring Branch ISD. In between I worked for a few years in positions that required high level bilingual skills, such as a Spanish contract linguist for the U.S. government and a Consular Officer in the Consulate General of Spain in Houston. But I found that I enjoy teaching the most. Unfortunately the emphasis on common core and testing has decimated support for foreign language programs and ESL over the years in public schools, so in June 2014 I left my public school position. I am currently teaching both Spanish and ESL on a part-time/contract basis for several organizations. I have time some weekday mornings, evenings and weekends available to work with individual adults and teens on their Spanish or English, whether they would like to improve their conversational skills, level of grammar or prepare for the AP Spanish Language and Culture test. Since I did not start a second language myself until I was in college but eventually became so successful that I beat out native speakers for a number of jobs, completed a Master's degree in Spanish and published original work in the language, I understand what language learners go through. There is nothing I enjoy more than seeing a student progress in their second language. I prefer to tutor in the Spring Branch area, but will go to other places (public places or student workplaces) when my schedule permits.

I have been taking lessons from Cheryl for a couple of months now and have been very happy. She has gone the extra mile and has worked to make sure that I have what I need to learn Spanish. I'm a beginner and I have found it very useful to have Cheryl to speak with and explain questions instead of only having a textbook or online tool.

    Experience

Free-lance English as a Foreign Language Teacher

    Oct, 1990 - Jul, 1998

Various locations in Santiago de Compostela, Spain

I taught English as a Foreign Language to individuals and groups in Santiago. Some were through different language academies and others were individuals that I tutored, ranging from a member of the Faculty of Medicine (in his case I also helped edit scientific papers for submission to professional journals) to teenagers and college students preparing for exams on different levels.

    Spanish Teacher

    Aug, 2003 - Jun, 2014

    Spring Branch ISD

I taught Spanish, usually three levels (Spanish 1 or 2, Spanish 3 pre-AP, Spanish 4n AP) every year for eleven years at the same school. For six of those years I was also Foreign Language Department Chair and Spanish credit by exam administrator. I wrote lesson plans and syllabi for the district based on SBISD curriculum materials and the College Board requirements for the Spanish AP Language test. I also re-wrote the Spanish 4 Credit by exam test twice in collaboration with other teachers from the district, basing the exam on the Spanish Language AP test.

    ESL teacher

    Jun, 2001 - Oct, 2001

Intensive English Institute, Houston Baptist University

I taught different groups of foreign students, usually students that had been accepted to American colleges or were preparing to apply to American colleges.
